Matty Fryatt

We all breathed a big sigh of relief when Matt Fryatt scored some of the goals which helped save us from relegation last season.

And there's fairly widespread agreement that he's not playing to that standard this term.

So what's the truth. Which is the real Matt Fryat and has he gone as high as he can climb.

The first thing about Fryatt is that other Championship clubs have had the chance to see him play and adapt their tactics accordingly - which has made it harder for him, and for City, this term.

Secondly he has never been fully fit from what I have seen and whose fault is that. The City player I knew best was Peter Shilton. And, barring injury, he would have been fit whether City had a trainer or not.

He used to come down to the Tuesday/Thursday training on Filbert Street car park and beg players to stay with him overtime so he could work, work, work on some aspect of his game. He didn't need pushing. He pushed himself from daybreak until long past dark.

So if Fryatt's not fit it's his fault.

And what a handicap it is for him. Why?

Because Fryatt is a limited goalscorer. He's a dribbler and manoeuvrer really. A guy who makes a bit of space and has an eye for goal. To do that he needs a sharpness which is not there right now and without it what else has he got?

Not a lot.

Fryatt doesn't blast em from long range. He's not a noted header of the ball. Not a great free-kick taker and not a now-you-see-him-now-you-don't near-post merchant like Cottee.

He'll always score some when he's fit but is too easily contained to score lots from what I've seen. Put a quick, strong defender on him and keep him more than 25 yards from goal and you're about there.

And, one of his great specialities is penalties - but we hardly ever get them and that's not likely to change if we don't get more folk in the box.

If someone can convince me I'm wrong then I'm all ears and will be delighted. But Leicester need more goals and sharpish - of that I am perfectly sure. Is the guy I had the bet with about Fryatt still around cos he needs to be saving up for that pint of Bar-Bar beer? It's £4.30 odd a pint!

It always seems to me that even when he's fit he doesn't have enough pace to get to the ball first when he needs to, whether it's to poke it through to another player or nick it round a defender or whatever. He's definitely skillful, and I think when he's at his most confident he's certainly a competent finisher, as his form at the end of last season showed. For me, other than the fact nobody in midfield seems capable of giving him a decent pass, it really is that slight lack of pace that lets him down.

He just needs some service. Im suprised Hume has scored as many as he has because he always has too come deep or out wide to collect the ball. David Connolly did it aswell , no wonder strikers get frustrated at this club nobody supplys them with any service to score bags of goals.

Important point. Nor does he seem especially strong.

not all players are the same and some can motivate themselves while others need motivating.

if fryatt is unfit and lacking then either rob can not motivate him or fryatt does not respect rob enough.

fryatt does seem to lack confidence when ive seen him this season , if you look at some of the goals he scored last season he has got into those same kinds of position but does nothing with the ball when last season he would have slotted the ball home.

then again we are now seeing a marked decline in all our players performances , kisnorbo and hume have not been at their best for a few games now.

Unfit, crap service and is a good striker but not a great one. In a team that plays to his strengths he would do better. If you look at how many goals all our stikers have scored the lack of any attacking intent is obvious

The lagues starts (subs)

Hammod - 10 (5) - 1 goal

Hume - 14 (5) - 7 goals

Fryatt - 12 (4) - 2 goals

O'grady - 5 (4) - 0 goals

With about half the season gone our strikers collectively have got 10 goals. A good few of hume's goals have also been long range efforts. The midfield is a crock of sh1t and doesn't help them out.

i dont agree with people slagging him off hes only just come back from injury so has no confidence and has no chance of getting any with the service hes getting its not his fault

IMO he would be scoring plenty of goals in a footballing side

So should we just leave him on the bench until we get some footballers in our side then? 'Cos he's going to continue not scoring and being pretty useless whilst our midfield stays the way it currently is.

What was his excuse before he got injured?

For me he needs to use a bit more intelligence, he's been sussed out as a greedy player, no problem with that if your'e scoring, but he isn't.

At the moment he's atttracting a heavy mob of defenders to him when he has possession, what he needs to do now is release the ball to the unmarked players around him, there have been many occasions when he could have done this. Do that a few times and he wont have so many marking him closely.

Spot on. If he releases the ball more, people will back off of him and get to him less quickly when he picks up the ball later on, giving him better opportunities. Confidence and fitness are both aggravating factors in this as well. He needs to take a good look at himself and figure out the changes he needs to make to his game.

Hopefully mate. We need the money asap imo.

Matt Fryatt will go on and have a successful career once Rob Kelly has been removed from the Club.

I've been his biggest critic but we can't sell him, we're going to need him next year in L1 which imo is his level.

Simple really.

City's midfield is so poor that the service for the front two is always going to be limited.

The midfield cant penetrate through the middle or behind the full backs.

Fryatt, as a traditional Centre Forward, needs the service.

I get better service from NTL than he gets. Kelly has to pick a team that suits the better footballers in the squad. Until he does this those players will look poor and below standard and we will have the joys of watching tiatto, low and johnson.
