Lord Nibblington Posted 7 February 2007 Posted 7 February 2007 Once again an England team with quality everywhere plays out another weird disjointed game, and this was just the kids! Loads of Premiership experience but we cant play a decent system. I blame Tony Blair. Dunno why, just do.
breadandcheese Posted 7 February 2007 Posted 7 February 2007 I never thought I'd say this, but I really hope we get spanked by 5 or 6 so we can get rid of McClaren. Tonight's team looks awful. Foster in goal isn't bad, he's a good keeper. I'd prefer Barry at left-back to Neville, but again, Neville is not that bad a player. The midfield and front two are appalling. Crouch upfront alone with Dyer just behind. The Spanish must be quaking. I thought we'd shown that this doesn't work playing Crouch and Rooney upfront, but no, we persevere with sh*te tactics, playing Dyer, a poor man's Rooney, who is likely to drop even deeper and just get in the way of Lampard and Gerrard who will all be fighting for the same space. The midfield won't work as a unit, the age old English complaint. With Barton in the squad, McClaren could have made a unit, to play as a team. Granted, Barton is not the most talented individual, but like Terry Butcher in 1990, could have been used to great effect tonight. Instead, it looks like we have a midfield that will be as effective as in Germany. I really hope Spain put us and McClaren out of our misery because quite frankly, next match against Israel in the qualifiers is crucial, and in Tel Aviv, it won't be an easy game.
Lord Nibblington Posted 7 February 2007 Posted 7 February 2007 Even if we got crushed by 8 or 9, I couldn't see McClaren going. The FA can't really afford to fire him. What with the giant screw up that was how they hired him. And I can't really see him offering to step down. I'm afraid we're stuck with him.

Isn't Crouch up front with Wright-Phillips and Dyer behind on the wings with a centre mid of Gerrard Lampard and Carrick (holding) I don't think Mclaren will be sacked because we lose heavily to Spain in a friendly some how.

I don't think it really matters whatever formation they're meant to be playing. It'll just be one god awful mess.

Quite possibly. I can't tell from the players named whether we're going to line-up 4-3-3 or 4-4-2 with Dyer upfront as he has done for Newcastle a few times and was tried by Sven 2 years ago. Either way, I think it a very weak team. If we got spanked and I mean really spanked, I think McClaren would be hounded out. There's no justice like mob justice. Get the Sun on the case.

Lord Nibblington Posted 7 February 2007 Posted 7 February 2007 Unless he plays Gerrard on the left. Or something equally stupid.
breadandcheese Posted 7 February 2007 Posted 7 February 2007 Unless he plays Gerrard on the left. Or something equally stupid. I'm sure I read somewhere that McClaren was thinking of playing Lampard on the left, so we may have something equally stupid. I guess we'll see tonight. Admittedly, with the players announced 4-3-3 probably seems more likely but this is Sven mark II.

Sven has his flaws (quite a few of them) but he's a million times more competent than McLaren.
Geo V Posted 7 February 2007 Posted 7 February 2007 Unless he plays Gerrard on the left. Or something equally stupid. I saw the press conference and when he was asked by a reporter whether it was 442 again and Lamps on the left he said yes. Happy days The only positive thing about the midfield he has selected is that with one out and out striker I can see the likes of Gerrard joining Dyer forward and maybe them all exchanging positions in midfield, passing a moving to make some space. I cant see a rigid 442 with Lamps standing on the let wing! Its not long before we see the latest McClaren master-piece...
breadandcheese Posted 7 February 2007 Posted 7 February 2007 Sven has his flaws (quite a few of them) but he's a million times more competent than McLaren. Blimey, that's pretty imcompetent. Even the turnip Graham Taylor wasn't that bad.

I think you're trying too hard to see a positive and you know it. I still think we're more likely to see Dyer dropping off deep with Gerrard, Lampard and Dyer all fighting for the same space. Even Crouch is more inclined to drop off these days, so we could see a very congested area of the pitch.

McClaren won't play Gareth Barry at left back because that'd be playing him out of position, and he's played left midfield all season. But he will play Frank Lampard at left midfield, when he's been playing central midfield all season, therefore out of position. This kind of stupidity hurts me. It really does.

Just think of that left flank. Lampard and Neville, not a left foot in sight. Whoever is on Spain's right flank should be having wet dreams at the thought.

Fortuantley Ramos is more of a centre back than a right back, and by the looks of it they haven't named a natural right winger in the first 11 either. He wont play Lampard on the left.

The People's Hero Posted 7 February 2007 Posted 7 February 2007 The ridiculous thing is... McLaren has never been a good boss anywhere.
Lord Nibblington Posted 7 February 2007 Posted 7 February 2007 The ridiculous thing is... McLaren has never been a good boss anywhere. You mean Middlesbrough? Seeing as that has been his only job as Manager before he got the England gig.
Thracian Posted 7 February 2007 Posted 7 February 2007 Once again an England team with quality everywhere plays out another weird disjointed game, and this was just the kids! Loads of Premiership experience but we cant play a decent system. The feeling I got from watching was that the whole approach to coaching in England needs to change. Everyone has to get this and that piece of paper and to do that they go on the same FA coaching course which is fine so long as the input isn't flawed and the result is a production line of positive, innovative people emerging who really can get the best out of people. But it's not. Certainly from the evidence of so many football matches these days. The no risks philosophies first championed by Allen Wade and clearly supported to this day are stiffling the game, drastically reducing the potential for excitement. England started this game, not by getting at the opposition thoats, but with two banks of four sitting so far back they might have been issued with pipes and slippers. They made so many pointless passes, committed so few people to attack and seemed so lacking in movement and imagination it was shameful to watch. Spain danced between and around and through our pedestrian central defence like dark-haired leprachauns at a party. Why play such hunking plodders? Pearce's half-time rollicking and the irrepressible Leroy Lita made the difference second half. as did Walcott's introduction. Not because Walcott himself made much headway - he was completely shackled by the Spain right back - but because Spain doubled up on him and that left space for others. And that's what you get with someone who's a real threat. Either they take you apart, or they provide room for others to do the damage. Providing you have someone who can pass well enough to exploit the opportunities which, thankfully, we did in David Bentley who looked a class apart.

Err do you mean left back or was Theo playing left wing?! Spainish Under 21 Left back is Miguel Torres of Real Madrid cracking little player. Hope you enjoyed last night, if I were you I wouldn't bother watching this evening it'll save you having to type a small novel entitled "how not to play football" on here afterwards.

Its so bloody frustrating because IMO England has some of the best youngsters around. When you see that u-21 squad and add the injured and unavailable players as well as the younger ones involved in the full squad you will see the future seems bright. What I dont get is WHY CANT THEY FIND A SYSTEM TO PLAY TO LOOK COMFORTABLE??!! Sorry for shouting but we are actually wasting players at International level. the only time I can say over the last 10 or so years where I have been proud of the way England played was when Terry Venables helped mastermind a walloping of Holland in the Euros over here. I dont understand why we always look so nervous away from home and are worried about beating the likes of Macedonia and at home, we play OK but never seem to see our full potential or at least for our players to repeat there club form. It may need some radical change from schoolboy level or grass roots as something isnt quite right and its a bit of a joke that the Spanish kids had little experience in La Liga (apart from a few) but some of our lads are club captains (like Reo Coker), players with full honours (Richardson, Walcott) and practicallty the rest are Premiership first teamers with the exception of Davies who is meant to be the next big thing and rated at £10m and Nugent who is worth £6m+. Loads of teh Spaniards either play for Real Madrids 2nd string (Castillo), smaller clubs or big teams but arent near first team selection.
Lord Nibblington Posted 7 February 2007 Posted 7 February 2007 One thing I would suggest is... our players aren't quite as good as we'd like to think they all are?
Bert Posted 7 February 2007 Posted 7 February 2007 4-3-3, 99% sure as we have no left winger in there. Sky sports are claiming that's it a 4-4-1-1. Big joke the formation if you ask me.
