I got renewal form through last week. Suppose I will renew. Only went down twice this year though so didn't get best value for money  :(

From the RL special it appears we have spent our budget on players this year. WK said they would only consider anything if an exceptional player becomes available.

We were in for Linley but he has retired due to injury.

No surprise although both are talented. The issue for them is we needed experience and proven run scorers.

I think we're well set on bowling thanks to the signing of White. Shreck, Raine and Mckay are great and Freckingham's a handy back up whilst Sheik can be nurtured. If coached well he could be ripping people apart in a couple of years.

That leaves a spinner. Naik looks like being retained for white ball cricket - very effective in T20 but not red ball stuff.

The two young spinners are learning their trade but with a strong pace attach maybe we don't need to recruit a seasoned red ball spin option. There aren't many around anyhow.

The encouraging thing for me is the new signings are on longer contracts and Raine and Mckay have re-signed for a couple of years. We'll need another pacer assuming Shreck retires at the end of next year.

I'd be surprised if Jigar is still here next season. On the new signings, 3 year contracts at their age is a massive bonus for them, I would've given them 2 years but let's see, excited by Dexter.

Looking to get permanent floodlights installed. Hope it goes ahead...

Leicestershire are seeking to placate residents' concerns over their plan to install permanent floodlights at their Grace Road ground as they seek to join the mass adoption of evening Twenty20 matches which are regarded as a vital component in ensuring English cricket's professional survival.

Without floodlights, Wasim Khan, Leicestershire's chief executive, who has been entrusted with reviving the ailing county, has warned it could disappear within five years.

Fourteen of the 18 first-class counties now have permanent floodlights, which has enabled them to push back the start times of matches in the NatWest T20 Blast, allowing spectators to get to the matches after work and acting as a prime driver of record attendance levels.

Concerns about plans for 40m flood lights at Leicestershire's Grace Road cricket ground

Concerns have been raised about plans to put up 40 metre high permanent floodlights at Leicestershire County Cricket Club's Grace Road ground.

The club has recently submitted a planning application for six large masts as part of a £1 million investment.

The club says floodlights are essential to allow cricket to be played at night to generate more income.

However some residents who live near the ground are concerned about potential light pollution and the appearance of the proposed structures.

  • Aylestone ward councillor Nigel Porter said the concerns were raised in a meeting for residents at the club last week.

He said: "People are really positive about what the club is doing but there are a few worries.

"The mast are going to be really big in an residential area made up mainly of terraced houses and semi-detached.

"They will be up all year round.

"There was the possibility of getting telescopic masts which can be raised and lowered when needed but apparently they would cost an extra £100,000 which means it won't happen.

"There is some worry about the way the glare will affect some homes."

Club chief executive Wasim Khan said: "I spoke to the residents and tried to get across that the way cricket is moving we need to be sustainable or we might not be here in five years time.

"We need the lights to be able to play later in the evening.

"It means we could start later T20 games later and get more people in the ground who would come after they finished work.

"I understand people's concern about light spillage but I think that is based on the experience of the temporary flood lights that the club used a few years ago.

"The science and technology has moved on so much since then.

"We are talking about getting the best floodlights available and there really will be minimal light spillage."

The club hopes Leicester City Council will grant planning permission for the lights so they can start work on erecting them in February.

It hopes to have the operational by may before pop legend Sir Elton John plays the venue in June.

Mr Khan said a grant from the England and Wales Cricket Board would meet around 70 per cent of the costs of the floodlights.

Leicestershire County Cricket Club has been given the go-ahead to erect permanent floodlighting at its Grace Road ground.

Councillors last night approved plans for six 40 metre high floodlights which will allow the club to play matches at night - particularly T20 games.

The move has however been opposed by some residents who live near the Aylestone ground.

They are concerned about the visual impact of the huge structures in a residential area and that they may be disturbed by the light.

oxes chief executive Wasim Khan said: "It is fantastic news for Leicestershire County Cricket Club that planning permission was granted at the meeting.

"Floodlights are an important aspect of supporting our sustainability strategy and we look forward to improving the match-day experience for our supporters.

"We saw an average 48 per cent increase in attendances at Grace Road for NatWest T20 Blast matches in 2015. The installation of floodlights will help us to both retain and grow our audiences. We can start our NatWest T20 Blast games later in the evening which will give more people the opportunity to attend after work."

Only Leicestershire and Somerset do not have permanent floodlights among the county cricket clubs and Aylestone councillor Adam Clarke warned the Foxes could be disadvantages if they were not allowed to develop the ground.

He said: "This doesn't mean I don't have sympathy with the objectors.

"There is a silent majority keen to support the club in its development ambitions."

He said he would have expected many more than the 14 objections submitted to the council.

Resident Dominic Kealey said he was disappointed councillors had unanimously approved the scheme.

He said he felt it was wrong planning officers published a report recommending the scheme be approved on December 17 - five days before the end of a consultation period.

Planning officers insisted it was not unusual to do start forming an opinion as consultation proceeded.

Mr Kealey said: "I have lived here for 30 years and I really want to see the club succeed but 40 metre lights are not the key to success."

He said larger attendance for matches would create greater traffic and parking problems in the surrounding area.

He also said the council had not not properly informed residents of the plans. The council denies this.

Liberal Democrat Aylestone councillor Nigel Porter said the club should consider telescopic mast, like those at Lords, which can be lowered when not in use.

A planning condition will limit the use of the light to ten occasions a year and they must be switched off by 11pm when they are used.

The club aims to have the floodlights up and running for the first NatWest T20 Blast game of the season against Northamptonshire in May.
