Landmark deal sees ground become the Fischer County Ground, Grace Road

Leicestershire County Cricket Club is delighted to announce that Fischer Future Heat has signed a landmark five-year deal to become the club’s Official Ground Naming Rights Partner. Leicestershire CCC’s home will now be known as the Fischer County Ground, Grace Road.

The storage heater specialists have a huge interest in sport in the city of Leicester as they sponsor both Leicester City and Leicester Tigers. Fischer Future Heat was recently advertised around the pitch on TV facing LED boards live on Sky Sports during the Foxes’ thrilling 2-1 win against reigning Premier League champions Chelsea at the King Power Stadium.

Grace Road was opened for cricket in 1879 and this is the first time in the ground’s history that it will bear the name of a sponsor. The ground location is notable for Fischer Future Heat as they were based on Aylestone Road before moving to their new premises in Frog Island.

Leicestershire County Cricket Club Chief Executive Wasim Khan MBE said: “Securing a ground naming rights partner was a major objective of ours this winter and it is fantastic news that Fischer Future Heat have come on board with us.

“This is the start of a hugely important partnership for us and we are really looking forward to working with Fischer Future Heat over the next five years. Ground redevelopments are a key part of our five-year business plan and it is great to be moving forward with those with Fischer Future Heat on board.

“With the Ground Naming Rights Partnership, the Elton John concert scheduled at the Fischer County Ground, Grace Road in June and the recent council approval of floodlights at the ground, 2016 is set to become one of the biggest years in the club’s history.”

Fischer Future Heat Founder and Chief Executive Officer Keith Bastian said: “Our company enjoys a prominent reputation nationwide but Leicester is its home, so we are incredibly proud to now have partnerships with the city’s three biggest sports clubs.

“As a lifelong cricket fan myself, I am particularly excited about our new friendship with LCCC and I am keen to play a key part in supporting the club’s future.

“Together we both represent a celebration of some of the great things to have come out of this city, and we hope that together Fischer and LCCC will continue to be exceptionally successful both in business and on the field.”

Leicestershire will be hoping to script an odds-defying fairytale in this season's County Championship, and elite performance director Andrew McDonald does not have to look far for the perfect inspiration.

A five-minute drive away from Grace Road lies the King Power Stadium, the base for Leicester City's remarkable rise from being relegation battlers to Barclays Premier League title contenders, and McDonald sees no reason why his Foxes cannot replicate that.

It promises to be another tough outing for Leicestershire, after a 2015 Division Two campaign that saw them finish bottom, and little surprise they are rank outsiders among bookmakers for winning the four-day title. One of the highlights last season was ending a 992-day wait for a Championship win, which came away at Essex in June. There has been plenty of change in the back offices of Grace Road, and if their new signings click and luck turns their way, McDonald is confident Leicestershire can exceed expectations in the same way Leicester put their pre-season odds in the rear-view mirror.

"I think it's a great story that you can turn things around with a bit of belief and obviously a few right decisions," McDonald told Press Association Sport.

"We'll be looking to do the same. We feel we've got the best coaches. We've got some really good senior players...and we feel things are matching up quite well.

"Who knows how far we can go. At the start of the season leicester were 5,000/1 or something crazy like that!

"I've been following from afar and watched the game at the weekend (versus Arsenal on February 14). Even though they went down to 10 men, the ability of those guys to work together, if you can get that it's something special.

"At the moment they've got that something special and they can work for that common goal. That's the art of getting that team together and hopefully we can have the same sort of synergy in our group."

The likes of new signings Mark Pettini, Neil Dexter and Paul Horton, backed by returning duo Clint McKay and Umar Akmal, will be looking to fire across formats for Leicestershire, who were knocked out of last season's NatWest T20 Blast in the group stages.

White-ball cricket also provides hope, however, especially if the Foxes are to take advantage of any complacency on offer from their opponents.

"I think it happens in sport - in 2011 when we won the T20 we were rank outsiders as well," McDonald said.

"It can turn quickly in sport. It's about getting a good start. We had a good finish to last season in the four-day game. We could have won a few games as well. That bodes well for this year."

Should they win the title, Ranieri's Foxes will perhaps be indebted to the efforts of Jamie Vardy and Riyad Mahrez, who have led the way with goals.

Cricket, compared to football, is even more reliant on individual brilliance, meaning the opportunity for a few upsets is more than just a dream, certainly if Horton and Dexter can replicate their displays from Lancashire and Middlesex respectively.

It is a more formal leadership split-up at Grace Road as well, with Pettini captaining the limited-overs sides, and Mark Cosgrove continuing to take charge in the red-ball game.

"We'll be looking for a lot of contributors," McDonald interjects. "I think that's the thing with Leicester football team as well. They've got a lot of contributors.

"Young Aadil Ali's finish to the season last year was outstanding, we had Mark Cosgrove, Ben Raine, obviously we've got Neil Dexter, Mark Pettini, Paul Horton coming in Clint McKay."

Meanwhile, one of Leicester's biggest contributors off the field has to be Ranieri, the Italian replacing Nigel Pearson and, by all perceptions, finding the formula for success almost instantly.

McDonald though has been in the area long enough to recognise all the pieces that make up a successful team.

When asked if he had swapped Foxes stories with Ranieri yet, McDonald said: "No I haven't. I've only sort of been back in the last couple of weeks (but it's) something I might definitely, if I had the opportunity, to have a chat with him.

"And also Nigel Pearson who started the ball rolling last year. In terms of the jigsaw puzzle he's just as important - in keeping them up and building that list of talent that he needed.

"Whether Pearson could have done what Ranieri's done this year is debatable. But Ranieri's put the sprinkle of magic in that group and really taken them to the next level. It's been a great story."

The city council is to loan £1 million to Leicestershire County Cricket Club.

The cash will be used by the Foxes to make improvements to their Grace Road ground.

The club says it will repay the council when it receives a £1 million grand from the England and Wales Cricket board in 2018 as well as a five per cent interest rate.

It will allow the club to start work on improvements ahead of the International Cricket Council's Women's World Cup 2017 which will take place in England with the Aylestone ground as a venue.

The money will fund improvements to Grace Road's stands and food outlets to provide a better experience for the increased crowds expected for forthcoming T20 and international matches.

Last night the city council set it budget with a number of senior politicians complaining about cuts in Government funding forcing cuts to services

However city mayor Sir Peter Soulsby has stressed the loan cash is from reserves set aside to repay the council's own debts rather than fund services.

He said: "There will be a legally binding agreement for the club to repay the money and five per cent interest is more than we would get if we left the money in the bank."

He said: "We are intensely aware that other well meaning councils have had their fingers burned when they have made loans to sports clubs.

"We have done all the due diligence on this and the loan is secured."

He added: "The cricket club has ambitious plans which will help to attract more people to attend matches, and will raise the profile of the club and the city across the country.

"Having successful sports clubs brings major benefits to the city, as the recent success of Leicester City Football Club has shown.

"By providing this loan the council can help the cricket club to fast-track its improvements, and we will earn interest on the repayment."

Cricket club chief executive Wasim Khan said: "We have a robust business plan and want to improve the experience of coming to the Fischer County Ground, Grace Road as quickly as we can.

"Our plans include improving public Wi-Fi, increasing the number of quality food and drink outlets to reduce queuing, and developing our existing stands all around the ground.

"We also want to restore the Maurice Burrows Balcony to give supporters a great view of the action.

"It's imperative that we drive forward these plans as quickly as possible, as we are hosting major match days in the next two years, including our popular NatWest T20 Blast games and the ICC Women's World Cup in 2017.

"That event will help inspire a generation of young cricket supporters and will encourage more female cricketers to take up sport in the city of Leicester.

"We are delighted that the city council is lending us the funds we need to accelerate our plans.

"The loan will be paid back in full in 2018, and we'd like to thank Leicester City Council for supporting our ambitions."

He seems to like seeking out publicity, few articles of him the Mercury as well.

Anyone got any ideas on what he actually wants to change?

I reckon we could be on for at least mid table this year.

The right blend.

Eckersley needs to step up.

But who misses out in the starting line up in the batting dept Sunday?
