Knighton Matt Posted 12 May 2007 Posted 12 May 2007 Right I am going to get lynched for this so I'm just going to say it and leave with honour and dignity. Look past the hype and I think you'll find that A Weekend in the City is a much better album than Favourite Worst Nightmare...

Of course its better. Bloc Party are such a better band on the whole imo.
lildave3 Posted 12 May 2007 Posted 12 May 2007 Of course its better. Bloc Party are such a better band on the whole imo. Not a chance.
sdb Posted 12 May 2007 Posted 12 May 2007 album-wise i'd say arctic monkeys are a tad better, but having seen both live i'd definatley choose bloc party.
Craig Posted 12 May 2007 Posted 12 May 2007 Bloc Party are amazing. Live and on record. It's not quite FWN, but it's close(ish).
Daggers Posted 13 May 2007 Posted 13 May 2007 BRMC > Both. BRMC are a pale imitation of Jesus and the Mary Chain. Frank Sidebottom beats all. You know he does. He really does.
Fez of Mahrez Posted 13 May 2007 Posted 13 May 2007 For me, there were four debut indie albums that were all released fairly close together (within twelve months of each other in 2005/6 I would imagine) that all bore comparison and I liked the Bloc Party album the least by far, compared with Maximo Park, Arctic Monkeys and We Are Scientists. This year they're all releasing their follow ups and on reflection the only one of three so far that improves on their debut is Bloc Party. Having said that, I'd still prefer to listen to Arctic Monkeys. I've got big, big hopes for the WAS record though. That was my favourite of the four debuts mentioned and I can't wait to hear how they follow it up. Bloc Party are alright, to me they're a million miles clear of The Killers, Kasabian and the Kaiser Chiefs for example - but it all comes down to personal taste and at the end of the day Gary, I just prefer Arctic Monkeys.

Jesus Christ, no. :nono: Admittedly, Favourite Worst Nightmare isn't brilliant, but Weekend In The City is fooking garbage! One of the worst albums I've ever heard!
Flynny Posted 14 May 2007 Posted 14 May 2007 I don't like the new Bloc Party album. It's not an improvement in the slightest. Every single thing is slacker compared to the first album, which was good by virtue of great drumming, dense guitar and the yelped vocals. The new albums got worse songs, weaker drumming, worse guitar and falsetto. I loved the first album and really, really wanted to like the 2nd and couldn't. Gave it about 5 listens and couldn't get into it at all. Wet-Trump: I like nearly everything Muse have done, but BH&R is 75% wank. Even Hullabaloo was better. The album's the opposite of a grower. It sounds all big and huge on first listen and blows you away, then you come back for 3rd, 4th, 5th listens and it's all hollow and there's no really good tunes to underpin it all. I absolutely loved Take a Bow at first, but it doesn't really touch 'Apocalypse Please', which is kind of similar in the bombast stakes. I think the only people mentioned so far who genuinely had a better album recently are the Monkeys. Not by much, mind, just a few subtle touches. I've never bought in to all the hype around them (hah what a twat I sound), they're good, not amazing, but there was definate progression and I have a feeling the next album will be even better for some reason.

I think the problem with it is that the first track is wank, the rest is about as good, probably as much of a step sideways as anything though. I kindof agree, it does seem a bit lacking - I really like the odd song on it but they all seem a bit flat after the first few times through. Take a Bow, Soldiers Poem, Hoodoo in particular are rubbish filler. I really liked it on first listen, but then I realised how many tracks I'd skipped and suddenly it seemed a lot weaker. Though I have to say, for most disappointing second album, I'd say Arcade Fire.
Flynny Posted 15 May 2007 Posted 15 May 2007 Though I have to say, for most disappointing second album, I'd say Arcade Fire. Ooh, dunno. It's a definate grower. Not as varied as the first album, and not quite as 'epic', but still solid. Lacks any genuine hooks though, takes a bit. Both the songs with the pipe organ are great.

Libertine Posted 15 May 2007 Posted 15 May 2007 Neither interest me in the slightest. But I'm enjoying the Muse and Arcade Fire discussion. And a mention of J&MC. Plus, all other Muse albums > BH&R. Still good though.
Sods Posted 15 May 2007 Posted 15 May 2007 Bloc partys album with 'two more years' is quality but the new one is shite! Arctic monkeys is so much better
PAULCFC Posted 16 May 2007 Posted 16 May 2007 Two more years on the first bloc party album is great, got the second and the jurys still out.Have to listen to it a few more time's.As for the arctic monkeys.......not got the first or second albums, when i hear their songs on the radio they just sound like a bunch of northern buskers! But that's just my opinion

Flynny Posted 17 May 2007 Posted 17 May 2007 Was two more years on silent alarm ? Nope, it's a B-side, I think.
sdb Posted 17 May 2007 Posted 17 May 2007 they put 2 more years on a second, later release of silent alarm which had another 2 new songs on i think, and a dvd if memory serves correct
