lookwhaticando Posted 21 May 2007 Posted 21 May 2007 Charlton have made their first signings since relegation by snapping up strikers Luke Varney and Chris Iwelumo. Varney, 24, will cost an initial £2m from Crewe, while 28-year-old Iwelumo, who was out of contract at Colchester, arrives on a free transfer. "Luke is an exciting young player and perfectly fits the mould of a Charlton player," said Addicks boss Alan Pardew. Full Story @ the BBC
imagine that Posted 21 May 2007 Posted 21 May 2007 Good to see Varney take the step up to the higher leagues. Lets just see if it works out for him. Will Varney or Iwelumo partner Bent next season if he stays?
isaidno Posted 21 May 2007 Posted 21 May 2007 That's good news for Quorn . I think they get 20 % of the transfer fee
Master Fox Posted 21 May 2007 Posted 21 May 2007 That's good news for Quorn . I think they get 20 % of the transfer fee I didn't know they had their own football club as well?
Fez of Mahrez Posted 21 May 2007 Posted 21 May 2007 £2million is ridiculous for Varney. Utterly ridiculous. That must put Billy Sharp at £3million at least, which is crazy.
Ric Flair Posted 21 May 2007 Posted 21 May 2007 £2million is ridiculous for Varney. Utterly ridiculous. That must put Billy Sharp at £3million at least, which is crazy. More like £30 million.
dandannieldanok Posted 21 May 2007 Posted 21 May 2007 That's good news for Quorn . I think they get 20 % of the transfer fee Certainly do, great news considering their recent promotion. £2million is ridiculous for Varney. Utterly ridiculous. That must put Billy Sharp at £3million at least, which is crazy. More like £30 million. How many times have you two watched Varney? I admit slight bias because I like the bloke and Quorn but he is all you want from a striker. Strong, quick and an excellent finisher. Billy Sharp has scored more because he played in a good team, don't tell me Crewe are as good as S****horpe.
Joe. Posted 21 May 2007 Posted 21 May 2007 We'll have to see whether he can step up the plate and perform in the Championship. I'm not going to write him off already and say that 2m is a ridiculous price for him because he may just turn out to be a brilliant buy Two good signings I think for Charlton.

I agree, with the inevitable departure of D.Bent they need goalscorers and I do believe this pair will fire them back up. And Varney has had Championship experience with Crewe, he has scored 5 goals in this division, one against city, in a struggling team.

And thats more than Fryatt has managed this term
Bryn Posted 21 May 2007 Posted 21 May 2007 Archetypal little and large partnership really. Iwelumo is strong and dominant in the air and Varney is quick and a good finisher. If he can make the step up, and Iwelumo maintains his form, they could be a good duo at this level.
Maybes Posted 21 May 2007 Posted 21 May 2007 I think two very neat deals there for charlton, apart from the 2million pound fee. S Surely this leaves the door open for Bent to leave
lildave3 Posted 21 May 2007 Posted 21 May 2007 Can't say i'm Varney's biggest fan, or Iwelumo's for that matter. At the end of the day, it's two championship players at best. Not very ambitious if you ask me.
MPH Posted 21 May 2007 Posted 21 May 2007 £2million is ridiculous for Varney. Utterly ridiculous. That must put Billy Sharp at £3million at least, which is crazy. well it makes you wonder... if varney is going for a fee of 2 million, how much would it cost to get someone like earnshaw? We will have to fork out tons of dosh if milan is wanting 4-5 players. for this season. lets just hope he puts his money where his mouth is!!!

Wezleylowski Posted 21 May 2007 Posted 21 May 2007 All i want to know is, are our scouts retarded? How did a player like Varney playing for a good team like Quorn evade the radar? No wonder we are so shit . The best we can come up with is louis bastarding Dodds an Rochdale dont even want him nevermind Charlton.
AyewJoking Posted 21 May 2007 Posted 21 May 2007 More money than sense. £2 million for Varney? I hope they fall fall flat on their ass.

Flynny Posted 23 May 2007 Posted 23 May 2007 Iwelumo's got a good record this season. Even if he's a risky signing, he cost absolutely nothing. Charlton have nothing to lose by signing him.
dandannieldanok Posted 23 May 2007 Posted 23 May 2007 More money than sense. £2 million for Varney? I hope they fall fall flat on their ass. Varney is a good signing, they have the cash and IMO have spent it wisely, Varney is an astute finisher with the pace to worry any defence. He isn't a midget either and can easily cope with the more physical championship. Pardew will get the best out of Varney, and Iwelumo, why should he flop this season??? I can see Charlton winning the league at a canter to be honest. No team in this league currently has a squad as good as theirs and I do not believe Watford and Sheff Utd will be as good as them.
