Thracian Posted 29 May 2007 Posted 29 May 2007 How ironic considering my experiences on here but it seems my youngest son may soon to off to work - in Hull. He returned from his travels today to learn that he's been invited to do a couple of days work at Winteringham Fields by way of job interview. Internet reference to the place seems awesome but I wondered if anyone had visited and what it was like.

Thracian Posted 29 May 2007 Author Posted 29 May 2007 I really hope Hullfox is your lads new boss That would be interesting.
Manwell Pablo Posted 29 May 2007 Posted 29 May 2007 Hull was once dubbed the biggest shit hole in England by this book. True story.
Rocky Dennis Posted 29 May 2007 Posted 29 May 2007 Been working there recently at the Smith&Nephew factory, It is a proper run down depressing shithole!! The journey away from Hull on friday afternoons is probably the most pleasant journey a man can make! Friends of mine that went Uni there said the nightlife is ace, I beg to differ tho!!
stez Posted 30 May 2007 Posted 30 May 2007 hull is the spiritual home of JWAD which makes it a fine place in my opinion, i believe there's a blue plaque on the DeVries Honda stand declaring as much

Sounds like the only good thing about the nightlife in Hull is not being able to see em. Mind you, you can imagine what the women might be like if Prescott's an example of what passes for a playboy in Hull. As for conversation. Well, I've enough experience of that...!
Ultra Posted 30 May 2007 Posted 30 May 2007 There are some decent pubs in Hull docks. I remember the Minerva serving some quality meals and ales when I went there on Boxing Day last season.
Bryn Posted 30 May 2007 Posted 30 May 2007 You can fook right off, Hull gets a bad press but it's a great place to live. There's plenty of places that are worth avoiding but the people are for the most part friendly, the city centre is good and improving and there's plenty to do. The night life is good and the women are as well (although I'll admit there's a shitload of chavvy trolly women). There's a reason it's a increasingly popular choice of University - the city itself is so highly rated by those who come to live here. He'll learn instantly what areas to avoid and what sort of people to avoid and with that lesson learned I think he'll really enjoy working here.
Thracian Posted 31 May 2007 Author Posted 31 May 2007 Hull might have been described as pretty grim by some commentators but my lad's just rang to say they sure know how to treat the palate at this place ... http://www.winteringhamfields.com/home.php
Strokes Posted 1 June 2007 Posted 1 June 2007 I've been for niights out in Hull two or three times and have always enjoyed it.
Hullfox Posted 1 June 2007 Posted 1 June 2007 Call me pedantic if you like but your son is going to S****horpe not Hull. It's like calling Coventry Leicester. Ultra, you picked a good pub there. The locals however would prefer you to call the area The Marina as opposed to the docks which are rough.

Ultra, you picked a good pub there. The locals however would prefer you to call the area The Marina as opposed to the docks which are rough. Pedantic!. I'll stand correcting but Hull has always seemed like the principle city of the area to me and Winteringham doesn't seem to be much further from the one than the other. Besides I always thought S****horpe was a town rather than a City and would probably have been of no particular significance apart from steelmaking and Kevin Keegan. Neither can I see anywhere where I've suggested Hull was S****horpe or even loosely suggested it. Winteringham might be in a district that takes in S****horpe but these districts change all the time (it was in Humberside not so long ago, which seemed pretty logical seeing it was near the banks of the Humber). How far would Winteringham be from Hull - a short drive east and one left turn across the Humber Bridge by the look at it. Big deal. I'm quite happy my lad would be going to Hull for his entertainment rather than S****horpe.
Number 6 Posted 1 June 2007 Posted 1 June 2007 My girlfriend goes to uni there so have visited a number of times. Was expecting it to be awful but it's not as bad as it's made out to be, the big screen in the city centre is awesome.

Thracian Posted 1 June 2007 Author Posted 1 June 2007 Maybe I should ask Burnham to explain it to you, you quite obviously have no grasp of the geography or culture. Culture? That's reassuring!. Apart from yourself and reading about Prescott and his antics, my only experience of Hull folk involved tracking down a guy who'd nicked £10,000 worth of antiques from some colleagues at Horncastle. But it was a long time ago - before the Docks had to be called the Marina I'd guess. Nice bridge though.

Bryn Posted 1 June 2007 Posted 1 June 2007 You'd be surprised how far away places south of the River can seem... I rarely cross the Bridge. Maybe cause of the tolls, I dunno, but people south of the bridge are likely to view S****horpe and possibly even Grimsby as the local population centres. And the Marina is called the Marina because it's a marina, a small fancy mooring area for yachts and other pleasure boats, with nice restaurants and stuff around it. The docks are further along the River Humber and are truly ugly. As docks usually are.

Thracian Posted 1 June 2007 Author Posted 1 June 2007 One thing, though entirely complimentary, which seems amazing to me is how come some hamlet in the middle of nowhere should have a restaurant that's reputed to be among the top 100 in the world? London, yes, Edinburgh yes but Lincolnshire can be one lonely outpost on a foggy night in the dead of winter. Yet my lad reckons that in gastronomical terms it's like getting a trial in the Premiership. The menu is nothing short of awesome. And suddenly the most reluctant of students seems to be all ears and talks of the head chef - a legend of his profession at a mere 23/24 - like he's the Cristiano Ronaldo of the kitchens.
