I nearly made it as a footballer. When I first went into secondary school, I couldn't kick a ball straight and was a byword for shite. A few years later I was better (but still pretty shocking) and got asked to play for the school team. I said no.

A sad, sad tale. Not to mention boring.

Funny how everyones broke thier leg or got a serious injury before trials lol

As for me i never made it, never came close i really didn't bother. I might play sunday league one day if i can be bothered to commit to training sessions.

I did actually break my leg last season.

Although I never came close in the first place.

I had a trial at Aarhus GF (Denmark) but never made it. A class mate of mine at the time, Morten "Duncan" Rasmussen, eventually made it and he now plays for Brøndby IF. Good player he is, but a fecking ignorant ****.

Going to a rugby playing school didn't help but trained under Bert Johnson/George Dewis at Leicester for a season in the 60's as a 14/15 year old while playing Senior League for Anstey Nomads and Midland Athletic.

From 16 onwards played/managed in semi-pro football at Hinckley Athletic (later Hinckley United), Loughborough United (managed by Bob Farley/Loughborough Colleges and Richie Barker/later Sheffield Wednesday) and latterly Bourne Town (after moving from the Mercury to work on the Peterborough Evening Telegraph).

Played against Grimsby Reserves, S****horpe Reserves and Hereford Reserves, had Bill Garner (later Chelsea) as a strike partner at Loughborough plus Pete Broadbent (ex-England and Wolves) and Ian Storey Moore (ex-Manchester United) as notable opponents.

Soon moved on to play squash on SRA and SRPA tournament circuit cos the "pitches" were smaller, I didn't get injured or suspended so often and it fitted in better with a full-time newspaper job that I enjoyed at the time. :D

Finished up as a National, Regional and County squash coach and was lucky enough to play three world champions (two men and a woman!) and another member of the world's official top 10.

Wonderful memories to this day but when you watch people like Davie Gibson play football and Qamar Zaman or Ahmed Safwat play squash you're under no illusions about simply being just another guy privileged to make up the numbers.

Full-time sport requires more talent than I had, a knowledgeable mentor if you can find one and full-time commitment on top.

my dad used to play for Anstey Nomads does the name Paul Reynolds ring any bells?

anyway to me um im 16 now and training with the local semi-pro side, I did have trails for Devon county when i was 14/15 but unfortunatly a knee injury ruled me out of playing in the game they offered me :( had a season or two out doing coaching now im managing a side and training, however it looks like my knee might rule me out of playing again.

Not sure it's exactly funny..breaking your leg that is...

The Hawthorn Amateurs play in the Victorian Amateur Football Association, a couple of rungs down the Aussie Rules ladder from the AFL. So besides sharing the same colours and suburb name as Hawthorn, that is all they have in common. I think they are travelling pretty well this season too.

Barry Hall a hero?..well i guess that depends on your definition..has been recently known for cheap shots on players when the ball is at the other end of the ground. Shame to see someone who has all the ability in the world to be reduced to a common thug when he is getting towelled up by his opponent.

Sorry to read about the dislocated knee before the R&D trials. Now that is an ugly sight. We had a player a few years back in the AFL who did the same thing and sat on the ground and knocked the kneecap back into position then got up and JOGGED off the ground to get medical help. MENTAL!!!

Sorry, no. I think I was 15 when I played for the Nomads so its nearly 43 years ago and all I can really remember is that the manager's name was George Siddons. We had a good, young side and it was a great atmosphere.

I've never even come close.

Mainly due to being crap.

Ha-ha - honesty at last!

It seems nearly everyone on here has had a trial somewhere, had an injury to scupper any forthcoming deal and just got beaten into the squad by a now very famous person. Unbelievable!!

And as I said to my team-mate - George Best - you can play today, George, because I can't be arsed.

The rest is history.

I could have made it but declined an offer to join Middlesborough to pursue a career in Nanotechnology

I almost made it as a respectable, upstanding poster once too.

But completely ballsed it after about 6 (I think it was) posts.

I would like to see what that world would be like.

Only for a visit, obviously. Don't think I'd want to stay there.
