Stevosevic Posted 1 July 2007 Posted 1 July 2007 Anyone on this forum nearly made it as a pro or had "trials" - like everyone has Between the ages of 13-15 i was at Norwich but was then released, following this i had trials with a few of the other close clubs - Southend and Cambridge United, unfortunately didn't make it - cant think why. So now i am playing semi-pro but i am going to uni in September so that will come to an end. I'm sure there must be someone on this forum who sacrificed a career in football for a more mundane job, or had a career wrecked by injury before it got started?

Finnegan Posted 1 July 2007 Posted 1 July 2007 My team were quite good so a scout from somewhere probably watched us once. So that's about as close as I ever got.

My housemate had trials with Bradford when he was 15 and they were in the Premiership but he broke his leg a week or so before. 'Mare. My other housemate payed for Weston-Super-are for a bit, they're Conference South. I've played for the mighty Fort Minge FC 5-a-side team. Delightful.
dandannieldanok Posted 1 July 2007 Posted 1 July 2007 A friend of a friend is on the books at Kettering Town I think
Durnerz Posted 1 July 2007 Posted 1 July 2007 Had Trials for Mansfield Town when I was 15 at the time when players like Chris Greenacre and Liam Lawrence were there. Impressed in the first trial and was asked back but had to quit due to education (was just going into my GCSE's) Tryed out for Quorn last pre season when they were having their re-shuffle thats resulted in their promotion, a good time. Otherwise when I was in France I played in a match against an Academy thats seeing their players join teams like Arsenal, Barcelona, Lens, Real Madrid etc boy could those lads play! Scored twice though
Guest Posted 1 July 2007 Posted 1 July 2007 I had trials with the real, original Leicester City Ladies.
Thracian Posted 1 July 2007 Posted 1 July 2007 Going to a rugby playing school didn't help but trained under Bert Johnson/George Dewis at Leicester for a season in the 60's as a 14/15 year old while playing Senior League for Anstey Nomads and Midland Athletic. From 16 onwards played/managed in semi-pro football at Hinckley Athletic (later Hinckley United), Loughborough United (managed by Bob Farley/Loughborough Colleges and Richie Barker/later Sheffield Wednesday) and latterly Bourne Town (after moving from the Mercury to work on the Peterborough Evening Telegraph). Played against Grimsby Reserves, S****horpe Reserves and Hereford Reserves, had Bill Garner (later Chelsea) as a strike partner at Loughborough plus Pete Broadbent (ex-England and Wolves) and Ian Storey Moore (ex-Manchester United) as notable opponents. Soon moved on to play squash on SRA and SRPA tournament circuit cos the "pitches" were smaller, I didn't get injured or suspended so often and it fitted in better with a full-time newspaper job that I enjoyed at the time. Finished up as a National, Regional and County squash coach and was lucky enough to play three world champions (two men and a woman!) and another member of the world's official top 10. Wonderful memories to this day but when you watch people like Davie Gibson play football and Qamar Zaman or Ahmed Safwat play squash you're under no illusions about simply being just another guy privileged to make up the numbers. Full-time sport requires more talent than I had, a knowledgeable mentor if you can find one and full-time commitment on top.
jaffa1970 Posted 1 July 2007 Posted 1 July 2007 I know we are on a football forum, or soccer as some of us ignorant aussies call it, however I played u/19's for Hawthorn, a team in the AFL. Unfortunately i snapped my shin and tore knee ligamnets in freaky tackling incident as never made it back. The u/19's are the step below senior football. Few of my old teammates went on to play in a premiership team..no envy here though...

General Smuts Posted 1 July 2007 Posted 1 July 2007 I played up front with Louis Dodds (yes that one) as a lad and even set up his first goal at under 9's. We both were scouted and put in for trials along with 5 other team mates, him doing better than the rest of us obviously. At the same trials were Levi Porter and Richard Stearman. Being a year younger than most of the player i didn't really get that many chances and after 2 years at the school of excellence played 1 game and was released. I was scouted by Emile Heskey and Sam McMahon's former manager. Yes THE Sam McMahon!! Also had trials with Kidderminster Harriers and was offered trials at Derby, Forest and CovScum which i not so politely declined. Now i play for the mighty Shooting Stars 5-a-side champions of Herts Uni. Captain Marvel me!
Milky Posted 1 July 2007 Posted 1 July 2007 My brother should be playing for the leicester reserves next season, but he's just had to retire
jaffa1970 Posted 1 July 2007 Posted 1 July 2007 No pain felt initially as I then bone had pressed on nerves, numbing any feeling in the leg. Once first lot of painkillers wore off..well i guess you could say it hurt..although that may be a slight understatement.. Been 17 years but still shits me when it is cold. Not sure how much pain weso felt, but i can really sympathise with him. Hoping to return to the UK soon to work again. Will be trying to get ticket for second half of season...for our promotion push..here's hoping anyway
Simi Posted 1 July 2007 Posted 1 July 2007 Theres too many good players in my age category. Yeh, that's my excuse as well.
Tommeh Posted 1 July 2007 Posted 1 July 2007 Had trials for Forest years ago and also played with the peteborough u/14s a while ago, Never really thought I'd make it though.
Nod.E Posted 1 July 2007 Posted 1 July 2007 Had trials for leicester a few years back. For my sunday team i conceded least goals in all 5 leagues last year. Now up to the first division, and hoping to get scouted. I'm only 15 and so i'm still hopeful. Who knows

I think my cousin plays or played for the Hawthorn Amateurs or something like that, I'm always getting sent pics just after he's been knocked out or just as he's getting into fight's quite funny! I love AFL, Even if I do watch it just for the fights! Barry Hall = Hero! First AFL match I went to he started a major fight (Geelong v St Kilda) i'll never forget it!
Toby or not Toby Posted 2 July 2007 Posted 2 July 2007 i had a trial two weeks ago for rushden and diamonds but on wednesday dislocated my knee, so thats put an end to that dream
Raj Posted 2 July 2007 Posted 2 July 2007 I NEARLY had trials in India for Madraschester United. I say nearly as in i didn't
Phube Posted 2 July 2007 Posted 2 July 2007 I stopped playing competitive football in the last year of Primary school (aged 10!!). But I was a stunning goalie!
