Simi Posted 6 August 2007 Posted 6 August 2007 Leicester City ended their pre-season campaign with a 1-0 victory over Cambridge United at the Abbey Stadium on Monday evening. It had looked like the defences had got the upper hand on the night - but Matty Fryatt was on hand to grab the only goal of the night with just 12 minutes of the game remaining. Martin Allen named a side containing a mixture of youth and experience for the contest. Patrick Kisnorbo was brought in for his first start since returning from Asian Cup duties with Australia, while Darren Kenton, Stephen Hughes and Alan Maybury were also given the nod. The home side came close to opening the scoring in the fifth minute of the contest. A neat lay off from Leo Fortune-West found Daniel Gleeson attacking down the right, but his shot failed to trouble Conrad Logan in the City goal. Cambridge came close again two minutes later. Former Chelsea and Portsmouth winger Courtney Pitt tried his luck from a 25-yard free kick, but Logan did well to turn the ball wide. The Us were on the attack again in the 13th minute. Daniel Quinton whipped in the ball from the left, but Fortune-West was unable to keep his shot down from just inside the six-yard box. City's first real effort of the game came with 18 minutes on the clock. Sergio Hellings made good contact with the ball from 25-yards, but his effort drifted just wide of Danny Potter's right-hand upright. Fryatt came close from distance three minutes later, but his curling shot drifted over the bar. Allen made just one change at the break - Levi Porter replacing Andy King. Fortune-West had the first effort on goal of the second period, but his shot from 25-yards was easily gathered by Logan. Ricky Sappleton came close to giving City the advantage in the 56th minute. The former QPR man charged down a Us clearance and burst through on goal, but Potter did well to make a low save. Allen made his second change on the hour mark - replacing Sappleton with youngster Billy McKay. Fryatt came close again on 65 minutes, but his shot on the turn from 12 yards fell narrowly wide. A clever ball through from McKay produced another good chance for Fryatt with 74 minutes on the clock, but the former Walsall man saw his shot well blocked by a Cambridge defender. A check through ball found Fryatt through on goal with 78 minutes on the clock, but his shot fell just wide. Fryatt finally broke the deadlock a minute later. Cambridge failed to properly clear a Hughes corner, and the striker was on hand to roll the ball under the encroaching Potter. Youngsters Joe Magunda, Lathaniel Rowe-Turner and Ryan Beswick were brought on for the final stages of the contest - replacing Alan Sheehan, Eric Odhiambo abd Darren Kenton. Allen will now spend the rest of the week putting the finishing touches to his squad ahead of their season opener against Blackpool at the Walkers Stadium on Saturday. City: Logan, Maybury, Sheehan (Rowe-Turner 72), Hughes, Kenton (Magunda 78), Kisnorbo, King (Porter 46), Hellings, Sappleton (McKay 60), Odhiambo (Beswick 82), Fryatt. Subs not used: Pentney. Us: Potter, Gleeson, Quinton, Morrison, Hoyte, Albington, Brown, Wolleaston, Fortune-West, Chillingworth, Pitt. Subs: Coulson, Smith, Peters, Convey, Reed, Hyem, Collins, Rendell. Att: 1,513 (240 Leicester)
Geo V Posted 6 August 2007 Posted 6 August 2007 Porter only sub? Good to see MF score again. I hope he is only playing in these games for fitness purposes and not because he is now 4th choice striker as he has plenty to offer. Bring on Saturday!
Eastern Fox Posted 6 August 2007 Posted 6 August 2007 Pretty terrible game I'm afraid, we struggled throughout the whole game to break Cambridge down, goal was very scrappy. Couldn't put any moves together, passing was worse than Cambridge United's most of the time. Not much positives really, no-one excelled. MA was pretty vocal from the touchline, but didn't really make any difference to the play unfortunately.
Bryn Posted 6 August 2007 Posted 6 August 2007 I'm sick of this pre-season shite, I just wanna get down to business and see how we're actually gonna play and how we do.

I think MA said his Bournemouth once lost 6 pre-season games and went on to win the division they were in so I wouldnt be too downbeat if we performed poorly. Did we take many there mate?

Eastern Fox Posted 6 August 2007 Posted 6 August 2007 240 apparently! Yeah it was a good turnout for a Monday night game. Saw Stearman and Wesolowski queuing up at half time for refreshments with rest of the fans!
lildave3 Posted 6 August 2007 Posted 6 August 2007 Yeah it was a good turnout for a Monday night game. Saw Stearman and Wesolowski queuing up at half time for refreshments with rest of the fans! Pie and a pint I presume?
Dames Posted 6 August 2007 Posted 6 August 2007 Porter didnt get enough playing time, He would have ripped them to shreds. Would have won 8-0 Porter laying on and then scoring 7 goals.
Eastern Fox Posted 6 August 2007 Posted 6 August 2007 Pie and a pint I presume? No coffee and a hot dog I think! Wasn't much choice on the menu at half time, no beer!

Levi did make a difference when came on, sadly not that much of a difference! I remember he stopped Hughes from taking a free kick (he was terrible) and took it himself. Pretty good, someone should have headed into the back of net. Can't wait for Hughes/Maybury to go-barely turned up tonight.

He's not bald Posted 6 August 2007 Posted 6 August 2007 Porter didnt get enough playing time, He would have ripped them to shreds. Would have won 8-0 Porter laying on and then scoring 7 goals. and 240 supporters called porter supporting the team!
Eastern Fox Posted 6 August 2007 Posted 6 August 2007 no change from last season for those 2 then, how did odhiambo and sappleton play Not bad, no real goalscoring opportunities, but the team as a whole was very poor-weak midfield didn't create many real chances. Sappleton was a bit better than Odhiambo I thought, but they're both for the future rather than next season on that performance.
dhermon Posted 6 August 2007 Posted 6 August 2007 http://www.cambridge-united.premiumtv.co.u...1086162,00.html maybury (dozy) and hughes (header from 6 yards ending up a throw in) up to their old tricks going by that
Dames Posted 6 August 2007 Posted 6 August 2007 in-demand striker Matty Fryatt. Doesn't bode well for the Fryatt Fanclub.
Thracian Posted 7 August 2007 Posted 7 August 2007 Not bad, no real goalscoring opportunities, but the team as a whole was very poor-weak midfield didn't create many real chances. Sappleton was a bit better than Odhiambo I thought, but they're both for the future rather than next season on that performance. It was a wonder Odhiambo survived the night. Twice he moved to the touchline for a 10-yard pass and twice Maybury delayed it so long it was a wonder the lad wasn't despatched to the stands by defenders. Maybury was dire last night - despite being captain. He wouldn't have shone in a Senior League match - and I'm not exagerrating. Why MA bothered playing him I don't know. If he wants him gone he should send prospective customers a video or two from his first season. Last night's effort would even have disuaded scouts from Stamford or Spalding...............reserves!
