MPH Posted 10 August 2007 Posted 10 August 2007 Due to the sensitivities of modern generations I've amended that to "The Hulk"I'm sure someone will claim that's equally controversial but no problem - I can learn more about the modern mindset and it can be altered again! not to worry- it was more to point out the guy saying next thing you might call a black guy an ape when you already sorta had but i know you didnt mean it offensively it was more to point out his mistake
Webbo Posted 10 August 2007 Posted 10 August 2007 Just keep on adding Bummers, benders, chocolate stabbers.

Flynny Posted 10 August 2007 Posted 10 August 2007 If you stood beside Sappleton you' see clearly why he might be called King Kong. Sorry how did anyone miss the quite obvious penis joke?
Hullfox Posted 11 August 2007 Posted 11 August 2007 Next time I go on holiday I want ringing when a thread like this gets started. Priceless.
Guest Posted 12 August 2007 Posted 12 August 2007 What I said was that "the word gay" had become sordid. It has become the dictionary definition of sordid, ie "dirty" literally and metaphorically. Not in my dictionary.
Thracian Posted 12 August 2007 Author Posted 12 August 2007 Not in my dictionary. Readers Digest Complete Oxford Wordfinder... Sordid = dirty and squalid.
Guest Posted 12 August 2007 Posted 12 August 2007 Readers Digest Complete Oxford Wordfinder...Sordid = dirty and squalid. You referred to the word "gay" as being "sordid". I'm sure that the Readers Digest or Daily Mail dictionaries quite easily confuse the two, however, my dictionary does not (It's the Oxford, for your information).

I'm sure that the Readers Digest or Daily Mail dictionaries quite easily confuse the two, however, my dictionary does not (It's the Oxford, for your information). I said that the "the word gay" had become sordid - as opposed to being a word that conveyed happiness - and for the reasons I gave. I said it had become the dictionary definition of the word sordid, and the dictionary definition of the word sordid is "dirty" or "squalid". You can argue the point as much as you like - it's what lawyers do I suppose. However it's a given that we will disagree anyway so I don't much see the point.

I will argue, because no dictionary that I have come across has ever used "gay" in a definition for "sordid" and vice versa. I can't believe that somebody finds the word defiled just because it is used to describe homosexuals. It takes narrow-mindedness to a new level. As were the other assumptions stated on the thread.

You've clearly decided not to understand a word I've said - and the subject certainly won't bear extending - but if you wish to consider me narrow minded there's nothing I can do about it. Nor would I especially wish to try. I quite like hearing a prospective lawyer sound so sincere.

The word 'gay' should be no more sordid than the word "heterosexual", and I fail to understand why either of them would be. Explain?

Thracian Posted 13 August 2007 Author Posted 13 August 2007 The word 'gay' should be no more sordid than the word "heterosexual", and I fail to understand why either of them would be.Explain? I've explained earlier - it concerns common usage as in headlines etc but it remains clear that few in today's society few appear to regret the intellectual abduction and anal rape of the once cheering word "gay". Few may even use the word "gay" in its former sense because it would now quite likely be ambiguous. The words homosexual and heterosexual rarely appear in such as Sunday newspaper headlines and neither have any tint of sordidity whatsoever. That's because neither are used except to be factually descriptive - they are too big anyway for most newspaper headlines. They are not used to convey types of crime, a form of bullying or to describe a sexually motivated attack.
Lillehamring Posted 13 August 2007 Posted 13 August 2007 i think the implication here is that 'gay' has progressed yet again to be commonly used now as a derogatory term for something or someone that is considered ineffective, worthless or feeble - for example: "oh my god, that's so gay" or "foxes talk is so gay"... it has reached a point where the word, adopted by homosexuals has now been adopted to classify things that are lame or rubbish (tho not quite sure it includes sordidity, but then i don't read the news of the world...) - such is the culture and society we live in.
Daggers Posted 13 August 2007 Posted 13 August 2007 The zombie thread lives. And did you know that the dictionary definition for the word Zombie is, in fact, kumquat-like?
Lillehamring Posted 13 August 2007 Posted 13 August 2007 ps. shouldn't this have long ago been moved into general chat?
Hullfox Posted 13 August 2007 Posted 13 August 2007 The zombie thread lives. And did you know that the dictionary definition for the word Zombie is, in fact, kumquat-like? He looks like he just witnessed the anal rape of the once cheering word "gay".
Thracian Posted 13 August 2007 Author Posted 13 August 2007 ps. shouldn't this have long ago been moved into general chat? Or removed altogether. It's gone a long way from nicknames...

The People's Hero Posted 14 August 2007 Posted 14 August 2007 As usual I don't find your schoolboy comments in the least bit amusing. Every remark you make is at someone else's expense, often mine but not exclusively.I've often wondered if you are insecure, have low self-esteem or some other psychological hang-up that might explain it. Or whether you simply think it makes you seem impressive. Who knows or cares, I suppose. But unless you take time out to actually succeed at doing something worthwhile, I imagine you'll remain frustrated and forever keen to take your assumed shortcomings out on someone else. Previous examples of your wisdom and judgement: Louis Dodds is the greatest striker in the world. Emile Heskey should play at centre back. Parking attendants are like the Gestapo. Once the 'evil' Chinese start eating fish, we'll all die. It's a plot to kill us all. Gay is synonymous with sordid. Filth. Black people are like apes. So does your above bullsh it bother me? No - put frankly, it would concern me more, if you did rate me!
