Brainy Posted 21 August 2007 Posted 21 August 2007 Tim Henman insists he still really enjoys tennis despite being expected to announce his retirement this week. Henman admits injuries are catching up with him and will put an end to speculation about his future at a New York news conference on Thursday. A back problem forced the 32-year-old to pull out of this week's New Haven warm-up event ahead of the US Open. And he said: "I'm enjoying playing but my body has struggled to cope with what I've been asking it to do." The British number two and former world number four is currently preparing for the final Grand Slam of the year at Flushing Meadows. And if he does quit the game as expected, Britain's Davis Cup tie against Croatia from 21-23 September would be his final competitive outing. Henman, whose wife Lucy is expecting their third child, has won just three matches on the ATP tour this season and has become increasingly frustrated with his back injury. BBC tennis correspondent Jonathan Overend said: "His ongoing back complaint has hastened this decision - not unexpected, it has to be said." Henman, currently world number 92, is set to drop out of the top 100 in the next few weeks and has not entered any tournaments beyond the Davis Cup. He said on his website: "Having a family has certainly changed the way I look at the world and also to a certain extent my priorities in life, but I would not go so far as to say that it has diminished my hunger for the game." Looking back on Henman's career, Mark Petchey, a former British tour player and now commentator insists his record should speak for itself. "In his own words Tim will say he was a good player but maybe because he didn't win a major people will say he wasn't a great player," Petchey said. "The reality is he salvaged British tennis for well over a decade and made Wimbledon exciting as we all believed he had a good shot at winning it. "He lost to some great players in the semi-finals and also also peformed well outside of Wimbledon with his semi-finals at the US and French Opens." Former British women's number one Annabel Croft suggested Henman could have a future career in coaching. "I can see him getting out on the court and working with some really talented individuals," she said. "But he needs a bit of time to enjoy his retirement away from the enormous pressure he's been under." Henman has reached six Grand Slam semi-finals, including four at Wimbledon, and got closest to winning the title when he lost an epic semi-final to wildcard Goran Ivanisevic. In 2003, Henman claimed a prestigious Master Series title in Paris, to complete his array of 11 titles. 606: DEBATE I hope Tim gets the credit he deserves StuartCVL
Joe. Posted 21 August 2007 Posted 21 August 2007 Yep you can't take away the fact he's had a good career and the decision he's made is probably the right one. He's got to a point in his career now were he's just very average and isn't beating people he once would have with great ease. In general though he's had a great career for a Brit and he deserves recognition for it.
hairy Posted 21 August 2007 Posted 21 August 2007 Thank God for that. F off Tiger Tim. Thinking about it though I would prefer him to that Scot, whos name I can't remember.

Manwell Pablo Posted 22 August 2007 Posted 22 August 2007 About time. The greatest British player of the modern era and Andy Murray will do well to supass what he achieved, but he's long past it.
THEBIGJOHNSTEADER; Posted 22 August 2007 Posted 22 August 2007 Tennis is guff and reminds me of Cliff Richard. Fook off!!

Lord Nibblington Posted 24 August 2007 Posted 24 August 2007 Thus endeth one of the comedy high points of every summer. Still, he was a top player. The only one we've had for a god awful long time. So good luck to him.
BartonFox Posted 24 August 2007 Posted 24 August 2007 At least that is the end of the middle aged women leaving snail trails all over SW19 in the summer. Sue Barker will have one last chance to twang her bud in the Davis Cup then Timmy and his horse faced minger can trot off in to the sunset. To be fair to Henman he has had to compete in an era that contained Pete Sampras and then Roger Federer and he always did well. He never had what it took to get in to the last stages much like the England football team. But like the England football team they nor Henman bigged themselves up, it was the wankers in the media putting stupid expectations on their shoulders. His gay fist clench when his opponent smashed on in to the net or out cheesed me off but he has had a good career and he has made British tennis credible again.
purpleronnie Posted 24 August 2007 Posted 24 August 2007 Why on earth does he have to have a press conference to announce his retirement?. This man who was born with a silver spoon in his mouth can't spell passion let alone have any, has never even reached a major final despite being raised playing on grass which no-one else plays on and getting the easiest draws at wimbledon he still can't win the bloody thing or even reach the final. He may have been the highest ranked player since the 2nd world war but what competition did he have? The only reason he was ranked so high was his runs at wimbledon. I'm glad he's retired and I hope Murray who has achieved almost as much as henman in 2 years than henman did in over a decade becomes known as our best player since the war and henman is just a bad memory along with those idiot 50 year mums with their union jack t-shirts shouting c'mon Tim. Good riddance.
Charnwood Norris Posted 24 August 2007 Posted 24 August 2007 With a name like Timothy Henry Henman it's no surprise he won nothing big. He probably had no hardships during childhood, thus no real 'killer' instinct. Having said that, his best year was 2004, age 28/29 - quite advanced age for a tennis player, and I thought he might be able to win something in his early 30's (like Virginia Wade did), but it's been a miserable downhill for 3 or so years now.

Good riddance. you sir, are a T*** That bullshit about Murray almost acheiving as much as Henman just caps it. Murray has achieved fook all so far, Henman reached number 4 in the world, was ranked in the top 10 for a decade, 4 wimbledon semi's, 4 wimbledon quarters, 1 french open semi plus other tour titles. Murray isn't fit too lace henmans boots at this moment in time, he hasn't even hit the top 10 yet or even got past the 3rd/4th round of a grand slam. Getting the easiest draws at Wimbledon? what the fook is that! several times at wimbledon he was against the greatest ever player on a grass court pete sampras, you know pete, the one who looks like a monkey, or your mum.

Never won a major never even made the final of a major...in other words... loser!!!!!! Keep wearing that union jack t-shirt though. Maybe he'll come back for one more let down.

Only a select few can win such a title, look at Sampras, he won 7 at wimbledon and numerous others elsewhere, just like modern day players such as Nadal and Federer have been and will continue too.

So what is he never won a grand slam event, he has made millions out of being very talented at what he did and won plenty of titles on the ATP circuit. Leicester City never won the FA Cup or the League title what does that make us

Agree with all of this, though I would add that I think 'Tiger Tim' is the most inappropriate nickname in history. Also just found out the bastard gets paid a million quid to drive a Jag!

Nobody talks about how great leicester are and how talented leicester city is unlike the morons who think Henman was so good. Sure he made millions, he didn't need them though, daddy had plenty. My point is he's over rated and never won a major tournament. You know that fat idiot shouting for tim 'never won a major' henman........thats you that is. We might win a medal at the world athletics championship - lets all go nuts!!!!!!! C'MON TIM p.s. How did you know I was an ugly virgin?
