ASH17LCFC Posted 30 September 2007 Posted 30 September 2007 Why does Megson drag everyone back for corners ? Levein did it and look what happened to him. Fuller's goal was due in no small part because they had a corner and we dragged all 10 outfield players back into the box or thereabouts. Why drag the likes of DJ and De Vries back who can't win headers. Leave a striker on the halfway line and they have to leave 2 player back. Clear the ball and who's up there ? No one say they put it back in and courses more problems. Stop doing it Megson because it could be you're downfall.

SOCCERROO FOX Posted 1 October 2007 Posted 1 October 2007 It doesn't make sense really does it because sometimes its the best way to get a conter attacking goal from it. My opinion has always been leave striker on the halfway line and the other striker around about 30 yards from there goal
Guest Posted 1 October 2007 Posted 1 October 2007 I thought that the goal came about because Fuller wasn't closed down.
eaststandtom Posted 1 October 2007 Posted 1 October 2007 I thought that the goal came about because Fuller wasn't closed down. yes and massive deflection
Thracian Posted 1 October 2007 Posted 1 October 2007 I thought that the goal came about because Fuller wasn't closed down. He will be soon, surely. On humanitarian grounds. I've rarely seen a professional footballer look so unfit. Yet still he scores.
The People's Hero Posted 1 October 2007 Posted 1 October 2007 He will be soon, surely. On humanitarian grounds. I've rarely seen a professional footballer look so unfit. Yet still he scores. There's no use complaining about Fuller scoring against us. That is what happens. It's one of the ultimate truths.
demon_dog Posted 1 October 2007 Posted 1 October 2007 There's no use complaining about Fuller scoring against us.That is what happens. It's one of the ultimate truths. Said to my mate before the game that Fuller was the one to watch. He scored against us last year if I recall correctly. Thought he had to much time on the ball before he shot. Was standing right behind the goal and could see what he was going to do, before he did it!! Shame about the deflection of one of their players, (handball ref?) Just a shame we didn't close him down.
The Stig Posted 1 October 2007 Posted 1 October 2007 Having someone stay up is always a good idea, a counter attack is always possible if someone like Hume, DJ or Fryatt is up, especially if they are not the tallest and therefore not needed for corners. Chelsea often leave three strikers up according to my mate sitting next to me and it can be very effective for them when counter attacking from corners.

Just what Greece did in the European Champs, a few years back. 3 up front at corners. Took four opposition players out of the attacking equation. Also helps keep the area clear for the goalie to have a better chance of getting the ball. Maybe we should put 5 players up front, that would pin em back.

demon_dog Posted 1 October 2007 Posted 1 October 2007 Sod it lets put everyone up front! Except Fulop
Thracian Posted 1 October 2007 Posted 1 October 2007 Except Fulop Even he might win a few in the air.
AyewJoking Posted 1 October 2007 Posted 1 October 2007 Everyone back for corners highlights the tactical ineptitude of Levein and Megson. Its like a lottery, the more tickets you buy the more chance you have of winning.

It's not just the chance of the counter attack. If all of your players are back to defend a corner, the opposition tend to throw everyone forward, crowding the area, and making the possibility of a "mistake" a distinct reality, as we have been subjected to in recent years. By having someone up, you take at least two opposition players out of their attack (you rarely see them leave a one on one situation), and more confident/arrogant sides keep more up for that very reason. Keeping everyone back suggests to me:- a) The manager and/or team do not have the confidence in their defensive abilities. b) The manager and/or team do not have the confidence to counter attack. c) The manager is tactically inept. d) The team are ignoring instructions from the manager. e) A combination of any of the above.
Staf Posted 1 October 2007 Posted 1 October 2007 I dont know why we bring 11 men back but it makes me angry

l444ry Posted 1 October 2007 Posted 1 October 2007 Can't say I'm overly keen on it either but Leicester aren't alone in doing this. Defending the box with eleven from corners is only acknowledging the fact that the immediate danger to the side is with that corner kick at that moment in time. With so many games being won with set-pieces it is perfectly understandable that any defensive team will pack the box to deny space to the attackers, either to stop a direct running header or to block other attackers runs. As for leaving three upfield for a corner, if a team did that against any side with a Beckham style delivery that team would murder you. The only way to assess this properly is to investigate how many goals a team concedes from corners when defending this way. If the result is none then it is a right and proper tactic for that particular team, Leicester included.
Simi Posted 1 October 2007 Posted 1 October 2007 Didn't Allen do this as well because it was 'statistically' more beneficial. Whenever we do it, I just think it confuses the situation more and makes our marking worse.
sdb Posted 1 October 2007 Posted 1 October 2007 Didn't Allen do this as well because it was 'statistically' more beneficial. Whenever we do it, I just think it confuses the situation more and makes our marking worse. yep, it causes chaos and gives us no outlet, leading to second and third waves of attack from the opposition - until we put it out for a throw (and push up a few yards!) or the opposition mess up. it's school boy stuff
potter3 Posted 1 October 2007 Posted 1 October 2007 We should have at least one outlet around the halfway line at least, not many of our players are able to retain possesion while other break Someone like de Vries** is the best option, he can hold the ball up well. fook sake just seen he's gone Leeds, well I'd rather stick Hume up there than Cort
Guest Posted 3 October 2007 Posted 3 October 2007 We did it again, and still looked shockingly poor. Thank heavens for Fulop, that's all I can say....
