Megson Salutes Battling Foxes...

Gary Megson was quick to pass off the plaudits to his players following City's gutsy 2-0 victory over Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough on Saturday.

Megson had gone into the game with two away victories under his belt as City boss - both coming in the Carling Cup against Nottingham Forest and Aston Villa.

But a Gareth McAuley header and an own goal from Akpo Sodje gave the Leicester chief his all important first league victory since taking over the club midway through September.

He said: "It's not about me - it's about the players. If you are successful as a football club then it will be the players that make you successful - not visa versa. There is too much emphasis shown on who is actually the manager. We put them out there and we organise them. We try to sign as good a players as we can when the opportunity comes along, but when they go out on the pitch it becomes about them as people and the honesty that they show. Today they can all take a massive amount of credit.

"Teams will never succeed, regardless of who they are, without desire and effort. They are things that the opposition cannot stop. They can stop you dribbling and shooting but they can't stop you running and that overwhelming desire to win games. That's what we need because if you have got that in your squad you have got a terrific starting point.

"I don't think we could have shown anymore effort, honesty and endeavour than we actually did, but we can show more quality - certainly in that last third. If we'd have just taken our time and chosen our passes a lot better then we could have won by a lot more than we did.

"The midfield worked their socks off - as they did the other day against Wolves. Today we were playing a right-back, and right winger and an 18-year-old kid in the middle and they have done terrific. But that's what we have got. When we chucked them in it would have been quite easy for them to throw the towel in and say 'I don't fancy this because I'm a right-back and I shouldn't be playing here.' But they didn't do that and great credit to them."

The City supporters directed a chorus of 'Ginger Mourinho' at their new manager midway through the second half - much to the amusement of the Leicester bench.

Megson added: "I have been called Ginger allsorts in the past in the past but that is a new one for me! I could hear some sniggering on the bench behind me and I turned round to find Iain Hume and Matty Fryatt killing themselves laughing like two little schoolboys. I asked them what they found so funny and they told me. It's obviously funny. But that is a lot easier to deal with for me. The football club needs everyone together, including the supporters, They are the biggest asset we have got.

"This club hasn't done a great deal for the last couple of years but we still get 23 or 24,000 week in week out. We have got to try and live up to the quality that they show. To do that we have got to have togetherness."

Joe Mattock missed the game with a calf strain, but Megson confirmed that he had already taken the decision to rest his young star.

He said: "I spoke to Joe on Thursday and I told him that I wouldn't be playing him because he is a young lad who has played a massive amount of football in a short space of time. He was just looking like he had gone over the top a little bit in terms of his intensity. But he had also picked up a thigh strain on that day which was probably due to tiredness."

I am not convinced tho as We have beaten a Very bad Sheffield Wednesday side. We drew with poor Stoke and Wolves sides. Today could have been the same IF Sheffield could defend corners from the left even worse if Fulop had not made at least the 1 world class save to turn it round when it was very low down on his right.

Maybe I'm not as easily pleased as you guys n gals, but I cannot bring myself to sing for him at this time unless in jest. He plays defensive football .

The one thing that I believe we can credit in some way him for is the shoring up of the Defense. Well done but Your not my superstar until we gain our respect back from ourselves, today went a little to pleasing me but when we go to Brom and Southampton and put on effective defensive displays and win 0-2 I will cheer. Until then its Gerry!

Fair play I agree with the majority of what you've said there but I have to say, Stoke are 5th, and that Wolves side is far from poor.

Now I really don't know what most city fans are thinking when they slag megson off for his negative tactics but surely if this (as with Villa) is the kind of result we can expect week in; week out then I'm more than happy to 100% back him. After all we do need to start winning games quickly and plus megson hasn't yet signed any of this team himself, so hes working with people that more than likely won't be here come next transfer window. So this may have been a poor win but it was a win an thats all that really matters. Period.

I'm delighted to hear that. I have been saying on other threads that we shouldn't rely on the younger kids to come in and expect too much from them from the get go and we need to "manage" them and today GM did that with both Mattock and King in different ways.

Yes he has made errors in team selection and in his substitutions at times but he is man enough to not dig his heels in and be stubborn and seems likely to change it where he sees fit. He is growing on me too and its nice to hear he has a sense of humour with the ginger Mourinho chant.
