Brainy Posted 19 October 2007 Posted 19 October 2007 Gotta be Lewis, surely? Whether he wins the title or not, what he's done this season has been remarkable. Although if England win the RWC, Wilkinson will probably take the credit.
Joe. Posted 19 October 2007 Posted 19 October 2007 I think it's got to be Hamilton hasn't it, he deserves it regardless of whether he actually wins the championship. To do as well as he has in his first season is incredible.
Nationwider Posted 19 October 2007 Posted 19 October 2007 Fair play to the chap. He can drive. Very well, and very fast. And his success puts him right at the top of the pile. But it's not a bloody sport. It's a pastime, a hobby, a means of getting from A to B without walking. He's in a mechanically-propelled vehicle. It's transportation. It's engineering. It's aerodynamics and computer science. They could hold F1 in an arcade at the local bowling alley. Football has Match Of The Day. Cars have Top Gear. Gary Lineker = sportsman. Top Gear = fat blokes and hamster boys. Nobody runs, jumps, there are no balls, nets, lineswomen, actually there are probably no women (except with big norks in lycra - is Sepp Blatter involved somewhere?), no hurdles, goal attacks, skis, bats, baselines, no offside, no scrums, declarations, shuttlecocks, lineouts, hoops, no lifts or jerks, no half-time oranges, no Sunday park games, no jumpers on the grass, no chalk stumps on the back of garages, no batons, bails, bases, quarters, halves, half-backs, full-backs, All-Blacks, Roger Blacks, and no bloody Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink. Lewis may well be a genius. But he operates a machine. Just like Janice Battersby does when she's sewing pants at Underworld in Corra.
Jay Posted 20 October 2007 Posted 20 October 2007 and if neither of them win it will turn into another celebration of mediocrity, failure and under performance that typifies british sport!!! do you think the Australians would celebrate someone nearly winning? I certainly don't
Blue Fox Posted 20 October 2007 Posted 20 October 2007 It's not even as if they drive the same machine and start from the same position. If their horse power was horses they'd be handicapped with the best starting at the back. 90% of the time there is no opportunity to over take. It's like watching the Lord Mayor's Parade with the dust cart, Spyker-Ferrari bringing up the rear! I nominate D. Decker of Arriva Fox who has an unblemished attendance record and arrived at all his destinations on time through out the last year
SamL Posted 20 October 2007 Posted 20 October 2007 Gotta be Lewis. IF we win the rugby the whole team should take credit, not just Wilko. But when you're driving a Formula 1 car, you're out on your own. You've got to deal with it in your own way and for a young bloke like Lewis to do so well in his first season is incredible.
Stevosevic Posted 20 October 2007 Posted 20 October 2007 Frank Lampard surely, or any other of the England players, they've been brilliant.

Geo V Posted 20 October 2007 Posted 20 October 2007 After that Royal nobody won it last year, I must admit I have lost interest. I hope whoever wins it this is time is actually that, a personality!
Tommeh Posted 20 October 2007 Posted 20 October 2007 Frank Lampard surely, or any other of the England players, they've been brilliant. I'd plump for Mclaren. If we do fail to make Euro 08, its just down to bad luck. Whichever way you look at it he has excelled in his short time in international coaching.

I certainly don't wow someone who has the same opinion as me, I knew there was another smart person out there. Well said my friend. I'd plump for Mclaren. If we do fail to make Euro 08, its just down to bad luck. Whichever way you look at it he has excelled in his short time in international coaching.
Finnegan Posted 20 October 2007 Posted 20 October 2007 It's a popularity contest. The rugby fans might vote for Johnny, but the Joe Bloggs public don't give that much of a toss. You've won one rugby world cup and that was awesome, this time it's far less glamorous and no one cares as much. Lewis has it in the bag already. The end.
Geo V Posted 20 October 2007 Posted 20 October 2007 Give it to Steve Harmison for his passion for English Cricket.
Raj Posted 20 October 2007 Posted 20 October 2007 Raymond Keene is a British Chess Champion, and the first British Player to achieve a FIDE (World Chess Federation) Grandmaster norm
Geo V Posted 20 October 2007 Posted 20 October 2007 Raymond Keene is a British Chess Champion, and the first British Player to achieve a FIDE (World Chess Federation) Grandmaster norm Wow what a flashback! I can remember that face from a late night Chess programme on TV, yes there was a chess programme on TV once!
Jay Posted 21 October 2007 Posted 21 October 2007 Robbed. well if he beats Kessler this year and Hamilton loses... just a bit annoyed that after his last few fights have been on itv this one is Setanta pay per view only
Jay Posted 21 October 2007 Posted 21 October 2007 Hamilton what even though some might say he bottled it on the first lap? we simply can't carry on loving the loser as we do in this country although you can't say Hamilton didn't try the fact is he didn't win while we carry on glorifying under achievement and finishing second in my opinion as I have said higher up in this thread it will continue to hold us back in sport in the countries that succeed the most in sport finishing first is the only option and nothing less will do in Great Britain you can finish 10th and as long as you tried hard thats all that counts and you are still classed as a winner!! I just don't understand it....
Asha Posted 21 October 2007 Posted 21 October 2007 Would still say Hamilton. Despite losing out on the championship, he came a lot closer than any tennis player at Wimbledon for example and imo deserves sports person of the year. He'll win it next year, and if not he will definately be a world champion one day.
