Sheehan V Kelly

Alan Sheehan is desperate to “prove a point†to former manager Robert Kelly when Leicester City travel to Preston in the Championship tonight (7.45).

Kelly is now assistant manager at Deepdale and Sheehan says: “I'm looking forward to this one big-time. There's going to be a bit of rivalry with Rob Kelly there.

“He didn't really play me when he was manager here at Leicester so I've got a point to prove to him.â€

Sheehan did not make a first-team appearance during Kelly's 15-month spell in charge at the Walkers Stadium, and was shipped out on loan to League Two Mansfield for eight weeks. He had made five appearance when Craig Levein was at the helm.

“I think I've now proved to everyone at Leicester that I'm good enough to play at this level,†added the Republic of Ireland under-21 international.

Sheehan has scored twice this season, and has been a major weapon for City with his set-piece deliveries.

And he went close to adding to his tally during City's 1-1 draw at Colchester on Saturday with another left-footed free-kick.

“I've had a look at it and I think it's just shaved a post,†said Sheehan. “I spend a lot of time practicing my delivery and I'm due a goal soon.â€

He would love it to be against Preston, and not just because of the Kelly connection.

Sheehan will miss the weekend home clash with Burnley through suspension after collecting five bookings. He picked up a sixth caution at Layer Road.

“I'm enjoying it so I don't want to miss out,†said Sheehan, who was City's Academy player of the season in 2005.

“The wing-back role gives me more of a chance to get forward. I've got Patrick Kisnorbo inside me and he loves defending.

“I think the system we are employing is a good one and, when we get our natural midfielders back - such as James Wesolowski and Stephen Clemence - we're going to be quite a force.

“I think we are starting to blend as a good team. Gerry Taggart and Frank Burrows have been together for three games and we play some nice football at times.

"A few of the boys were disappointed that we took only a point at Colchester, but I think that shows how much we are coming on.â€

I hope Sheehan does prove his point to Kelly but am not sure about Kisnorbo being inside him...

Might bring a new meaning when you hear the chant "get into them, **** em up"!!

If Sheehan can improve his defending and don't get carried away with his set pieces then he could potentially be a good player.

His corners against Sheff weds were quality and won us the game. His free kick against Chelsea was quality.

I don't think Kelly shouldve thrown them straight into the mix of things when the team were doing poor but should've given them some substitute appearances to gain experience.

I think Sheehan is starting to prove his doubters wrong.

Sheehan and Dodds seemed good mates and I imagine both feel the same about Kelly. It was quite scandalous really the way he treated them.

I know Nils had a decent enough last season with us defensively but he offered little going forward - except at Preston - and Sheehan could well have been used as a regular substitute to give him vital experience. As for some of the alternative left-backs Kelly used it was laughable and I lost all respect for him.

To me it was a classic case of a coach failing to develop a player and, frankly, I saw few signs of any of our players improving noticably during that time - a time, incidentally, when our free kicks were often woeful and wholly unimaginative. Some players went backwards.

I just hope Sheehan doesn't let the Kelly angle wind him up too much and affect his overall responsibility within the game. He should always be determined at the level he's playing now but Sheehan is best when he's calm, thoughtful and focused.

He's a Ferdinand type not a Tiatto type and the more aggressive he gets the more he's prone to mistakes from what I've seen. Frank Burrows and Gerry Taggart seemed to have the right effect Saturday when they helped steer him forward from a shaky almost reckless start to an excellent and far more effective yet controlled finish.

Yeah after seeing Sheehan a couple of times n full games this year and higlights of most games Sheehan has great potential and i hope know after being given a chance at regular first team games he goes on with it and continues to work hard on his game.

It's a bit of an odd attitude to take IMO. RK is now a coach at Preston after it being made clear he's not fit to manage, and despite sixteen signings being made Sheehan has still managed to hold down a regular first team place (more down to lack of options than him being brilliant but thats another debate for another day) it's pretty clear Rob probabley made the wrong descion in freezing him out completley, especially when Nills was injured and we ended up with Alan Maybury at left back. So why the grudge? No need.

Important point that.

And I think his decisions to refuse a loan spell at Lincoln in favour of staying here and to put in regular extra hours on the training pitch working on those free kicks and other weaknesses have really reaped untold benefit.

They showed to himself and others that, however good you might think you are, it benefits yourself and is noticed by others when you go the extra mile.

Hopefully that little bit of growing up will prove the key to a successful career - and perhaps an inspiration to others who might be on the fringes of the team.

To me, Sheehan hasn't done much more than convince me that he is just a fantastically cultured left foot. Yet, although I don't particularly rate other facets of his game just yet, he is reasonably important in the current setup owing to our lack of ability in scoring from open play.

Sheehan red card anyone??

What for a shocking two-footed challenge on the Preston assistant manager :punk: yes please!!!

Well at least ONE player is up for some attacking, must-win footy tonight then.

Good on yer, Al. Prove your point with two fcuking outstanding free kicks.

Leicester 2 Preston 0

If he'd wasted a week of their life some people would have had a grudge - let alone a season.

I'd truly love to see Kelly in a small-sided game against Sheehan, Dodds, Chris O'Grady, Andy King and Danny Cadamarteri.

Perhaps Kelly could play with Horsfield, Jarrett, Newton, Hughes and Maybury.

I'd back Kelly's side out of those two.

I don't blame him for being annoyed by Kelly overlooking him last season. He isn't the most talented player in the squad but he has taken his chance and has been the big suprise of the season for me. Somehow he has been our most dangerous attacker this season, although I'm not sure if that is more a mark of how toothless our other players have been so far.

Horsfield, Jarrett, Newton, Hughes and Maybury ... Would thrash TEAM SHEEHAN. I don't blame Kelly not for playing Sheehan or Dodds. The man was trying to keep us up and by throwing a bunch of kids into the fight wouldn't of helped us at all. Thats where people like Johansson and Newton stood up and was counted on. We needed experience at the time not a bunch of the junior foxes to come and have ago. Still i didn't like Kelly i might add ...

All the above may or may not be as you say but I rather think you missed my point.

If I recall, Johansson and Newton were two of the players most instrumental in getting Kelly sacked.

Their continued ineptitude week in out contributed to a dire spell of results.
