Former Wigan manager Paul Jewell has ruled out a return to the Barclays Premier League club.

Jewell, who resigned at the end of the last season, was thought to be the preferred choice of the Latics following the sacking of Chris Hutchings last week.

He was approached by club owner Dave Whelan over the vacancy but, after a short period to consider his options, decided against rejoining the club he guided to the top flight.

It is understand terms between the parties were not discussed.

Jewell's decision leaves the Wigan position wide open with the club not thought to have a top target.

Whelan and his board will now look through applications before formulating a plan to take the club forward.

Graeme Souness and Joe Royle are two other names to have been strongly linked with the position.

Jewell for Derby or Boro------------whichevers available first & it won't be long !!!

I read in a London rag last week that he turned down the opportunity to speak / negotiate with Leicester. He said he was ready to return to football, though added he was waiting 'for a better offer.'

I took this as financial more than anything else. I'm not sure Milan's wallet would have opened far enough to have tempted him.

Stranger things have happened. Plus, we can always dream...

Never gonna happen, He turned down a chance to manage in the Premiership so why would he want to come here.

What i'd like to know is what the people working at the job center are playing at,aint you supposed to get a bollocking for turning down work?....Might just give them a ring and become a whistle blower......hehe :)

Jewell was just interviewed on sky sports News.

He said he turned down wigan because nothing had changed- he had taken them as far as he can. He also said that he had in the past been given one or two offers but it was the wrong time. He then went on to say that he wasnt proud and he would be willing to work outside of the premier league , ideally it would be in the prem but didnt have to be ' i'll work anywhere' was what he said..

There is still a chance!!!!! come on!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wow this thread is still going strong.

I would interested to see if ANYONE realistically thinks we will get Paul Jewell.

So, anyone?

Yeh he said that if he got any offers from chairman seeking managers then he would seriously consider it. And he's targetting teams with "ambition" cos he is "ambitious" just like "Milan" "Mandaric"... so, we have no chance then? He's going to Burnley?

Just reading the quote in Joe Royle's link with Wigan

'i feel at my age i am looking for a club which is either in the premier league--or which has GENUINE AMBITIONS to be in the PREMIER LEAGUE IN THE NEAR FUTURE'

OOoouch

Personal reasons??

He has turned down a fantastic offer from wigan. so it aint just the money Jewell is after

So Jewell hasnt ruled out speaking with Preston, I wonder if milan has actually tried to interview Mr Jewell, i mean lets face it we can offer a lot more than what Preston North End can.... surely??!!

I thought Cotterill was strongly linked with Preston?

Jewell looks like he's interested in the ROI job  When people speak of being "flattered" at being linked with a club/team, that speaks volumes to me. Good news on the international front for me if he takes this, although I wouldn't mind seeing him here if/when Tig says non.

Saying that, I do think that he would have been here last week if he was going to take the City job, same goes for all these managers out the game at the mo like Reid et al. That's why I think it's none of the suspects currently being banded around at the moment and it's a manager already in a job, or possibly someone still being paid by a club after 'leaving'.

Jewell won't take the ROI job unless he's got a clause to leave for a Premiership club in the next year or so. However, he is the sort of man who is humble when it comes to clubs being interested in him and he doesn't believe he's ever too good to take any managrial job on be it Premiership, Championship or whatever. He said so hismelf recently. I'm sure it's out of politeness to the Irish FA for being interested in him.
