Former Wigan manager Paul Jewell has ruled out a return to the Barclays Premier League club.

Jewell, who resigned at the end of the last season, was thought to be the preferred choice of the Latics following the sacking of Chris Hutchings last week.

He was approached by club owner Dave Whelan over the vacancy but, after a short period to consider his options, decided against rejoining the club he guided to the top flight.

It is understand terms between the parties were not discussed.

Jewell's decision leaves the Wigan position wide open with the club not thought to have a top target.

Whelan and his board will now look through applications before formulating a plan to take the club forward.

Graeme Souness and Joe Royle are two other names to have been strongly linked with the position.

He would be superb, but he seems to be quite choosy about where and when he plies his trade and seeing as he is out of work surely he would have been one of the first on Milan's list?

It would be class if we got him although, it is very unlikely. Why would he choose a crappy Championship team over a premiership team?

But surely, Milan has to give it a go.

Did i read somewhere that Whelan and Jewell were in transatlantic discusions?

If so could jewell be in the states?

Hes probably had the nod at Boro awaiting Southgate sacking, stil a glimmer og hope for many peoples No1 choice (well mine!)

AHHhh I could almost accept it if he hadn't of said he wanted to return to football, or he had accepted an offer from a Prem team, but these are the facts that annoy me most. He's available, turned down other jobs, but still won't join us or at least say he won't join us! Like he's toying with us! Just say NO to the press, but don't keep me hanging on with the very slim chance he might join!!!!

We wear blue, Wigan wear blue. I think he wants to go for a team in a different colour, it's got to be the only reason he hasn't joined us yet.

Apparently royle is favourite for wigan now, bit odd how once we mention/employ a manager the premiership teams just can't keep their hands off.

Hopefully jewell wants to come here.

paul jewell no chance  i wish though

In his column in the freebie newspaper Metro last week, Paul Jewell said he couldn't wait to get back into management and was open to offers. Clearly what he didn't say (but meant) was offers from top premiership clubs.

You would have thought that somewhere like Leicester might have appealed to him, but then again perhaps he just didn't relish the idea of working with Milan Mandaric.

Paul Jewell has rejected the opportunity to return to Wigan following talks with the club's owner and chairman Dave Whelan.

Whelan's decision to dismiss Chris Hutchings prompted fevered speculation that the man he replaced, Jewell, was being lined up for a return.

Jewell surprised the football world at the close of last season when he announced his decision to quit - just 24 hours after saving them from relegation.

Whelan has made no secret of his desire to be reunited with a manager who steered the club to great success during his six-year stint at the helm, but Jewell has now elected to spurn his advances.

"Paul has made it clear he doesn't want the post," a Wigan spokesperson told The Guardian.

"But it made sense to ask him because of the unique relationship he has with the chairman. Dave asked Paul if he would come back and he thought about it but decided it was not for him.

"They did not get into any contractual discussions."

The spokesperson went on to confirm that the club are hopeful of making an appointment before their next game against Arsenal on 24th November.

"There are still a lot of decent applicants and it's a wide open field and we're still confident we will have a new manager in place by our next game."

Said this when Jewell made a statement the other week saying he was ready to return to football, Milan needs to go out his way to get him to Leicester now, He's turned Wigan down so god knows why he'd want to come to Leicester but Milan's got to try, Maybe Jewell wants a challenge....I would call managing Leicester a challenge more of a impossible task. Maybe Milan has spoke to Jewell, maybe Jewell's turned us down (I wouldn't blame him) but even if Jewell has turned us down I want hear Milan let us know because at least we'll know he's tried instead of appointing a huge letdown of a manager then having all us on his back saying "Ah didn't try and get Jewell did he?!", If he comes out and say Jewell turned us down fair enough.

C'mon Milan the majority want Jewell, He's always been top of mine and many other's list, but personally at the same time he's always been abit unrealistic, Go out your way to try and get him here!
