davieG Posted 15 December 2007 Posted 15 December 2007 Anyone have any experience, views (good or bad) of these? I'd like to hear them please! I'm looking to buy one to put a load of photos on but I've yet to come across one that doesn't have a bad review attached to it. The biggest problem seems to be that they are all prone to becoming inaccessable.

Mark Posted 15 December 2007 Posted 15 December 2007 Freecom are both cheap and very reliable from my experience, you can pick you a 500gb one for £68, which if I needed one I'd go for http://www.ebuyer.com/product/131331
Bellend Sebastian Posted 15 December 2007 Posted 15 December 2007 My Western Digital Mybook 320gb hasn't given me any grief as yet. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Western-Digital-32...4134&sr=8-2 Reviews pretty good for the most part

MC Prussian Posted 15 December 2007 Posted 15 December 2007 I own a LaCie 250 GB, neat design by F. Porsche. No worries as of yet, although my previous (first ever) external hard drive - by a different manufacturer - gave up on me one day without any prior warnings. This is my current one:
Daggers Posted 15 December 2007 Posted 15 December 2007 I have three and never had one go down on me. It'll hardly be worth it soon, except for transporting data. article

Daggers Posted 16 December 2007 Posted 16 December 2007 seagate or western digital are the best IMO Aside from the one's that have the power supply in the base of the unit and cause over-heating and premature failure.

I can't wait 4 years besides my laptop is less than a year old so can you recommend one as you seem to have plenty of experience of them. Thanks.

If you look on DABS you will find customer feedback about the products which, whether you buy from them or not, is useful information.
danny. Posted 20 December 2007 Posted 20 December 2007 Aside from the one's that have the power supply in the base of the unit and cause over-heating and premature failure. not heard about that, the 3 i have all have exteral PSUs and i have no probs. WD and seagate internal drives are the only ones I've never had problems with. Maxtor on the other hand I've had 3 die on me! I would personally get a cheap caddy off ebuyer for £10 and then buy an internal drive, more flexible and probably cheaper that way.
Bellend Sebastian Posted 20 December 2007 Posted 20 December 2007 When I bought my WD I read LOADS of bad stuff about Maxtor. They're certainly not universally raved about

act smiley Posted 26 December 2007 Posted 26 December 2007 They're usually pretty good, but sometimes they do tend to go wrong a bit quicker than other brands. Not had a problem with them myself, but I know someone who had one die after a year or two. Still, nothing like the scale of those IBM ones with a design fault that meant they were basically guaranteed to break a few years back.
Simi Posted 26 December 2007 Posted 26 December 2007 I got a 500GB one for Christmas, KEEN More room for the photos of your amazingly drunk antics.
