Lillehamring Posted 7 January 2008 Posted 7 January 2008 oldies astrud gilberto karen carpenter toni tenille newer kathryn williams aiko laetitia sadier (not great, but great atmospherically)
Trav Le Bleu Posted 8 January 2008 Posted 8 January 2008 A few of my favourites...Liz Fraser (Cocteau Twins, "Teardrop") Jenny Lewis (Rilo Kiley) Victoria Bergsman (ex Concretes) Harriet Wheeler (The Sundays) Nina Persson (The Cardigans) and the truly wonderful, late, great Kirsty McColl. Good call - but no one has mentioned Alison Shaw (Cranes), Margo Timmins (Cowboy Junkies), Julianne Regan (All About Eve) or Sarah Cracknell (St Etienne) yet, what's wrong with you!? Interestingly, just found this video of Natalie Merchant singing with the Cowboy Junkies Margo Timmins and Natalie Merchant singing

Nationwider Posted 8 January 2008 Posted 8 January 2008 laetitia sadier (not great, but great atmospherically) Sarah Cracknell Considering they front two bands that I consider myself to be a nerdy collector and massive fan of, that is quite remiss of me! Laetitia Sadier has an unusual voice. Sarah Cracknell is not a stand-out as a vocalist either, but both just suit their respective musical styles.
Guest Posted 9 January 2008 Posted 9 January 2008 Most of my faves have already been mentioned on here but I thought I'd add Tori Amos to that list

Agreed, but sexy as hell and I've been close enough to touch her Was also quite funny in her appearance on Buzzcockxs

Lineker's Left Foot Posted 9 January 2008 Posted 9 January 2008 There is nothing and I mean NOTHING quite like hearing good music with a talented female vocalist singing over it. There's something incredibly sexy about women singing and also incredibly pleasurable on the ear.I would have to say Beth Gibbons of Potishead is my favourite female vocalist. She displays such raw emotion and versatility in her singing, it's a pleasure to behold (as you would have noticed for anyone that read my review of the gig I went to in the Portishead thread). Another favourite of mine is Lou Rhodes of Lamb. Listen to their album Fear of Fours (or in fact any of their albums although that's the best) and you will see what I mean. From the old skool I would say Dusty Springfield and Eva Cassidy are both amazing vocalists. Hearing either of them sends a shiver down the spine. So, woman who can sing, I salute you. Hey James, you may also like:- Emiliana Torrini Liz Fraser (Cocteau Twins) Lisa Hannigan Martina Topley-Bird Moya Brennan AND ALSO Siobhan Donaghy (ex-Sugababes) - whose albums are good !! Yes and Eva Cassady too has an amazing voice, so too did Karen Carpenter - although I hated their music !!
Lineker's Left Foot Posted 9 January 2008 Posted 9 January 2008 oldiesastrud gilberto karen carpenter toni tenille newer kathryn williams aiko laetitia sadier (not great, but great atmospherically) Kathryn Williams - fantastic !! Never heard of Laetitia Sadier though ??? I love Madeline Peyroux as well !!!
Lillehamring Posted 9 January 2008 Posted 9 January 2008 Kathryn Williams - fantastic !! Never heard of Laetitia Sadier though ???I love Madeline Peyroux as well !!! saw her a few times, in very different venues (including a church in piccadilly - wow) - and she gets me each and every time... massively underated talent laetitia sadier is from stereolab also rate vashti bunyon, for those who like a bit of character in their vocals, and one you might not expect is carla bruni...not just a pretty face.

Sadier from Stereolab, oh didn't realise that ... she passed on too didn't she??? Stereolab are excellent !!
Lillehamring Posted 10 January 2008 Posted 10 January 2008 Sadier from Stereolab, oh didn't realise that ... she passed on too didn't she??? Stereolab are excellent !! no, that was mary hansen, an australian girl who sang backing vox for stereolab and high llamas... a cycling accident in london, apparently, stupid and wasteful death, really... very sad.
Trav Le Bleu Posted 21 January 2008 Posted 21 January 2008 Having just got The Howling Bells album I must add Juanita Stein to the list. And listening to her reminded me of this brilliant singer... Hope Sandoval of Mazzy Star - what gorgeous music they made!
MikeyT Posted 21 January 2008 Posted 21 January 2008 Cara Dillon and Lisa Gerrard are very ggod! And people will want to murder me when i say this but i dont care. I think Enya is very good! I shall wait to be attacked!
Unabomber Posted 27 January 2008 Posted 27 January 2008 Anyone here heard Lauran Marling? She has a great voice and is only 17 Link On Jools Holland

I think Enya is very good! I shall wait to be attacked! Enya is an excellent singer, under-rated, and her music is quality and innovative !! Better than the X-Factor wannabes IMHO!! I too don't understand why she's always slated!!
Lineker's Left Foot Posted 27 January 2008 Posted 27 January 2008 Elizabeth FraserTracey Thorn Skye Edwards I too am a fan of the Cocteau Twins' and Eveything But The Girl's lead vocalists However, not so sure about Skye Edwards as never heard of her!! Think I've put this in earlier in the threads, but also love Kate Bush (of course!!) and the vocal talents of Martina Topley-Bird, Violet Indiana and Sia !! Also a big thumbs-up to Lisa Hannigan, who has sang on Damien Rice's albums!!
