The new Rooney at Plymouth

England and Scotland are battling it out over a 14-year-old whizkid dubbed the "new Wayne Rooney".

Plymouth Argyle striker Aaron Spear has Scottish parents and may be tempted to sign up for the Tartan Army after the SFA made a move for him.

The Devon - born starlet plays for Argyle's under-18 side and is said to be similar to Rooney in style and strength.

He has already been offered a professional contract by Argyle, but the two international camps are not the only ones taking a big interest in him.

Scottish giants Rangers and talent-spotting Arsenal have been making checks on him.

Spear is being well looked after at Home Park - because his dad Ray is one of the Championship side's youth team coaches.

Yes, yes, yes we hear this every week but for a 14 year old to be playing for the under-18's then he must be something special.

How on earth can you label someone as the "New Wayne Rooney" at 14?

You don't and all it does is heap pressure noone of that age can handle.

Cherno Samba.

Doubt he's as good as Wayne Rooney, special players like him don't come along that often.

Hes got two years to start scoring in the premiership until he can be dubbed the new 'Wayne Rooney', and then take a European Championships by storm, oh and then earn a £30million move to one of the biggest clubs in the world, then score a hat-trick on his debut in the Champions League.

It could happen, unlikely, but it could.

Too much pressure on the child already. He's been giving the name " New Rooney" and he's only 14  What happens if he's just a total flop and makes nothing of his footballing life?

In my eyes all media attention should be kept off all youth acadmeys and kept on the real world of football, no matter how good a player is at an early age they shouldnt be getting publicity like this unless there very something special like Rooney was.

I hate it when people say here's the next or Ronaldo'. People said that about Walcott being the next Henry, I know he is still young but... I cant see him being anything close to Henry.

I think our experience with Mattock (and others before him), shows how cautious we should be before hailing youngsters as the next world megastar.

Very true but that shouldn't stop us being positive about the Academy though. We just need to temper our hyperbole. :D:);)

If people choose to exaggerate comments that are made so that they are unrecognisable that's their lookout.

And if the standard of our first team had been higher in the first place then the young players wouldn't have been in contention so soon.

But when a club uses the likes of Hughes, Jarrett, Horsfield, Johnson, Low, Newton, Kenton, Maybury in our first team and then imports the sort of players we signed in the summer their early elevation is inevitable.

It is not my fault that when the young players do get a chance, they join a team that's full of fear and uncertainty and a team that has no chance at all of playing with any consistent fluidity nor with any great attacking conviction.

Is he actually doing well there? I haven't heard anything about him really.

Only made 1 start, mainly sub appearances but has still got 5 goals.
