purpleronnie Posted 7 February 2008 Posted 7 February 2008 I've read people posting that they thought Rooney had a good game but I didn't think so, he's there to score and his record is poor. Man Utd this season he has 6 league goals, compare that to Ronaldo's 19!!!! He;s scored 5 goals in his last 25 england games including games against wales x 2, Azerbaijan,Trinidad, Macedonia, Andorra, switzerland, Crouch scored 14 goals in his 25 games. We all saw how well england can play without him last year, and I thought maybe its time especially during the friendlies to try something else. I know Agbonlahor got injured but for future friendlies I'd like to see Ashton, Kitson, Defoe, Bent, Crouch, Heskey or at least try different formations. Playing Rooney as a lone striker didn't work and pushing him out left didn't either, playing him behind the striker is probablyt the best position but does that stop gerrard going forward? I don't think england should drop him from competitive games but I think we should look for alternatives. Preparing myself to be shot down!!!

I personally think he's been poor for England since Euro 2004, he's probably only performed in 20% of the games since then and that might be being kind to him actually. But he is a world class player for Manchester United, I just hope Capello can get the best out of him. Playing up front on his own is suicidal given the way we play football.
TrickyTrev Posted 7 February 2008 Posted 7 February 2008 Well he is not an out and out goal scorer is he, he is always dropping extremely deep to get the ball and starting attacks. He links up with players beautifully and knows when and how to make the right passes. His flick to Gerrard for the second goal last night was lovely. I think we should use him as one of two wide attackers, the other being Cole, allowing us to have Gerrard and Lampard bombing on from midfield and a holding player who isn't Gareth Barry,
Tommy G Posted 7 February 2008 Posted 7 February 2008 He can win you a game. His all round performances have been decent for Utd this season. He can change the game and be a match winner, I don't believe anyone else in the England squad can do that right now. Swapping him for the likes of Dave Kitson/Heskey/Ashton? Your mad

Ok, it's not the best, but he's missed a few through injury and I imagine that he's assisted quite a few. And of Ronaldo's 19, how many have been Penalties and free kicks? (Not that i'm taking anything away from Ronaldo before someone slates me.)
Ric Flair Posted 7 February 2008 Posted 7 February 2008 Rooney has 12 goals from 26 games this season and he'd probably consider himself to be having a bad season.
mancunianfox Posted 7 February 2008 Posted 7 February 2008 Rooney has 12 goals from 26 games this season and he'd probably consider himself to be having a bad season. Well said. People go on about Rooney's scoring record for Man U but it is actually pretty good considering that he is rarely required to play as a 'true' striker. He has averaged 1 in 3 in the league since his premiership debut. I thought he had a very good game last night. He was trying all kinds of different things last night and was the only entertaining player on the pitch. He was doing lots of clever things with the football but he was also putting tackles in and chasing every lost cause. He came close to scoring several times as well but I always got the feeling he was trying to create a spectacular goal in a game in which England were under no real pressure.

Your mad I'm not talking about competitive matches just friendlies to see which options are best. Again england played at their best without him when heskey played up front. Rooney could get injured or banned. I think these games are perfect to try different front players.
Stevosevic Posted 7 February 2008 Posted 7 February 2008 It doesn't matter who is scoring the goals as long as they are contributing to a successful team, like he is at Manchester United. I could use our club as an example, under MON. We were reasonably successful yet we never really had a striker who was truely prolific, but the team was doing well so it didn't matter.

That's not what they said about Heskey when he was playing and not scoring for England but still having a positive effect.

He was at left-back because Ashley Cole was asleep all game, he was in central-midfield because Gerrard and when Hargreaves came on did nothing. Ok, Rooney is not the most prolific goalscorer but its his work rate and I really thought that yesterday he WAS England and was disgusted when Gerrard got man of the match.

Father Ted Posted 7 February 2008 Posted 7 February 2008 Isnt his job to score or at least set goals up? Why is that his job, just because he is a striker it doesn't mean he has to score goals, especially if he is playing on his own up front.
davieG Posted 7 February 2008 Posted 7 February 2008 Why is that his job, just because he is a striker it doesn't mean he has to score goals, especially if he is playing on his own up front. So you'd expect the players not playing up front who aren't strikers to score then? If not that leaves us relying on own goals.
Joe. Posted 7 February 2008 Posted 7 February 2008 In ways I agree with you purpleronnie. However I think Rooney should start for England, but in a 4-4-2 formation. Like you say, I don't think you get to see what he can really do as a lone striker. I'd quite like to see Crouch and Rooney start next game up front, and I think it'd work a treat.
AyewJoking Posted 7 February 2008 Posted 7 February 2008 Rooney cant play up front on his own. End of.
Geo V Posted 7 February 2008 Posted 7 February 2008 Rooney is World Class. Ideally he`ll play just behind a main striker but we must find space for him in the team. Its a shame we haven't got a real quality penalty box striker for him to link with as Michael Owen doesn't seem to be the same player he was a few years ago. The Real Madrid move seems to have taken his edge away but then again that was probably down to injury!
Sods Posted 7 February 2008 Posted 7 February 2008 To be honest hes one of the people i would have on the team sheet straight away with Gerrard.
AyewJoking Posted 7 February 2008 Posted 7 February 2008 Michel Owen was better when he was 17. Back then he was all about running at people and scoring goals, thats all you need.
