ASHES TO ASHES

07 February 2008

9pm, BBC1

A YEAR ago, Life On Mars fans held their breath as detective Sam Tyler threw himself off a high-rise to save his friends.

The door closed on one of the Beeb's best dramas, but it wasn't the end for Sam's boss, DCI Gene Hunt, played to perfection by Philip Glenister.

In Ashes to Ashes, he is joined by Keeley Hawes, of Spooks fame. She plays DI Alex Drake, a psychological profiler who, shot in the head during a hostage crisis, finds herself back in 1981.

She wakes up in 1980s London dressed as a prostitute with Ultravox ringing in her ears. As if that wasn't bad enough, Alex discovers that Hunt, the hard- bitten copper she assumed was a figment of Sam Tyler's imagination, is all too real.

Settle back, and enjoy. But be warned: by tomorrow, every third bloke will be saying "fire up the Quattro" whenever they go to their car.

Good effort and should get better.

I liked the 80's music in it, Gene's character is still as good as in LOM and Keeley Hawes aint half fit. Good stuff

Just got out my Tubeway Army LP.

Jo the Waiter is a classic.

That’s what I was thinking, this episode was always going to be very similar to the first episode of Life on Mars. Hopefully the series alot more to offer than simply being Life on Mars in the 80's minus one very good character.

Thought it could have been better to be honest. Hopefully the back story is out of the way now, and they can get on with the humour. Keeley Hawes' psychological talk is just not funny in the context, so I hope we see less of that, and more of the conflict that made Sam and Gene such a great double act.

It's a pity CBeebies stops transmiting at 7, life must be very difficult for you.

It does? I go over to CBBC at 4.30 pm so wouldn't know.

I hope to god that was a joke, aren't you like 15? How embarassing.

Of course it's a joke

And I was 15 on the 28th January so a few weeks ago :D

Well Phil Glenister (on friday night wth jonathan ross last friday) has already said that this isn't a spin-off from LOM in the conventional sense, it is a series in its own right and completely different to LOM.

Oh I forgot

Bonus Marks for Zippy and George.

Oh how could you forget them?!?
