AoWW Posted 10 April 2008 Posted 10 April 2008 Linkage - if it's worked! Well here it is, better late than never... or not, as the case may be, depending on your tastes. This ended up being an indulgent journey into some of my favourite stuff – with some other tracks that I just wanted other people's opinions on (and, no, I'm not gonna tell you which are which!). I feel I should have made some effort to try to 'categorise' what's on here but I hate trying to link tunes to a particular genre, plus it's ended up a pretty eclectic mix so I shan't bother – check the track list and decide for yourself if it matters that much to you! I realise I've been crap at reviewing those that have been put up so far but I really am going to blitz them over the next few days and give my humble opinions. If I've repeated tracks that have already appeared elsewhere, apologies, I must admit I haven't checked all the track listings so it could easily happen. Oh, and for someone who generally moans about covers versions there are a spookily large number on here – bizarre! I hope everyone manages to find a track that they like - or can at least tolerate! Moving Pictures – The Cribs This was my favourite album of last year. You could pick anything off it. Reminds me of a period last summer when I was going swimming before work every day, used to put this album on every single day and never got sick of it. Still not. (I can see why people don't like it, as a precursor to the inevitable "same old indie" comments!) 9/10 03. Need One – Martina Topley Bird (ft. QotSA) Not heard this before. Don't really like it to be honest, sounds a bit MOR to me. That seems very weird to say of something QOTSA have been involved with but it just sounds like the sort of song that plays over the end credits of a quirky romantic comedy. 6/10 04. Feeling Good – Muse Heard this many, many times! 7/10 05. A Martyr For My Love For You – White Stripes I've erroneously neglected the last couple of White Stripes albums to be honest. I have them both but just never got round to playing them. Which is stupid because I loved White Blood Cells and Elephant. Really like this, I love the unpredictability of their songs. 8/10 06. Second Chances – Paper Route Think I may have introduced you to these?? Listening back to it now it was probably more cos I thought you'd like them than because I liked them myself. Snow Patrol!!! 6/10 07. Catch – The Cure Never been a huge fan of The Cure but I like some of their stuff. Can't really get into this. 5/10 08. Feel Good Inc. – Skye Edwards Fascinated to hear this, she's got a great voice and the original was a great song. I think the best thing about the original though was the bounce and energy which this removes. It's an interesting rework but I doubt I'll listen to it again, it's just reminded me how good the original was! 4/10 09. No Diggity – Klaxons I downloaded the Radio 1 CD this came from out of curiosity, knowing full well I probably wouldn't like much of the stuff on it. When I saw this was on it I did think "Yikes!", this could go horribly wrong. One of my favourite songs when I was younger. It's the best example ever of the modern RnB genre. But they've pulled off a really interesting cover version! My favourite song on that Radio 1 compilation. 7/10 10. Collarbone – Fujiya & Miyagi This is just one of the best singles of the last 5 years. Will be interested to hear peoples opinions. I nearly put an F&M track on mine. Love them. 10/10 ---- Will do the rest tonight!!! (I apologise for sounding like a twat during most of this review!!! This is how Raj must feel all day!!! )

Bandits – Reverend and the Makers Naturally I’ve heard of them, but never really gotten into them. This wasn’t bad though and I’ll give it a few goes to see if it grows. 2. Moving Pictures – The Cribs I have the album, Man’s Need, so naturally I like these… never been able to rip it to my PC for some reason though, so top marks there AoWW! 3. Need One – Martina Topless Bird The girl who always sings on Tricky’s albums. I knew I recognised the name but didn’t realise who she was until I started listening. Nice, never heard her solo stuff. Not quite as good as Tricky, but listenable at least – added to my PC. 4. Feeling Good – Muse Great cover-version… which I have, since I have plenty of Muse stuff. However I really have to say Matt Bellamy’s vocals really suits this song. When I saw this I was tempted to put Faith No More’s cover of Easy on my mix (it’s kinda similar), but then decided most people will have heard it. 5. A Martyr For My Love For You – The White Stripes I have every White Stripes album… except Icky Thump. I felt that Get Behind Me Satan was a disappointing album. There’s only so much you can do with a guitar and your talentless sister banging away on the drums – so-so. 6. Second Chances – Paper Route A pleasant ditty which will get a few more listens at least! 7. Catch – The Cure One of The Cure’s best songs and one that I associate with a friend, which always makes a song fondly remembered. As a callow youth I loved The Cure. I still love The Cure, but only pre-Wish. I have a theory that rock musicians should be prevented from writing any music beyond the age of 40, with The Cure being a classic example of this! I know there are ones who break the mould, but not enough to justify the huge steaming pile of crap that is “veteran song writers”. 8. Feel Good Inc. – Skye Edwards I have said elsewhere I have a soft spot for cover versions that are done a little bit different and I do like this. Going in my list. 9. No Diggity – The Klaxons And flipside, BAD covers. This has exactly the same pace and rhythm of the original. Practically the only thing different is the vocal. BIN! 10. Collarbone – Fujiya and Miyagi I’ve seen these as Fez’s sig, but that’s my only experience of them. After this bland outing it’s likely to stay that way. 11. The Facts of Life – Black Box Recorder Reminds me a bit of St Etienne and a bit of Goldfrapp, but not as good as either. She hasn’t got the commanding kind of voiced that’s needed to make a talky bit of a song work (see Never Ever by All Saints as another bad example) 12. When the Angels Play Their Drum Machines – Hefner I dissed Hefner earlier when reviewing TPH’s mix. I was gonna diss this after one listen, but… you know what, it’s a grower! 13. I Lust U – Neon Neon It’s Ladytron isn’t it? No, now come on now… it is isn’t it? Ah… crap male vocals spoil it. In the same vein as Sugarcubes, whose songs were always great until the bloke started singing (curse you Einar!) Meh… spoilt. 14. Le Monde – Thievery Corporation I’m currently writing a novel which features a place called Monde in it (and yes, I know it’s French for World!) Not exactly Air is it, but pleasant enough. 15. Smoke & Mirrors – RJD2 Quite chilling. I found this interesting info on Wikipedia --- "Smoke and Mirrors" contains vocal samples from "Who Knows" by Marion Black and "Waterfall" by Cris Williamson, and musical excerpts from "Heaven Knows" Written by N Champion and A Howard. 16. Dream Brother – Jeff Buckley I love Jeff Buckley. Grace has to be one of my favourite albums ever and “some” of the tracks off his posthumus releases are equally good, though some were obviously never properly finished. What a voice and what a tragedy. 17. I’m on Fire – Bat for Lashes Back on the cover versions, but this is a good one cos it’s different. One to keep. 18. Bloodstream – Stateless This mix is very chilled out. I hate that I’m constantly comparing with other bands, but this is like Aqualung, but I like Aqualung better. Not bad mind… just not good either. 19. Cry Mississippi – Helicoptor Girl What has 4 eyes and runs for thousands of miles? That’s right – Jimmy Saville! This was nice and once again chilled – will have to listen a few more times. 20. If You Stayed Over – Bonobo They’re monkeys? They’re not? Oh, well monkeys would have been better; monkeys always are! 21. You Look So Fine – Garbage Now, you see, I used to like Garbage and Shirley Manson was HOT. Now they are one of the most aptly named bands out there, sadly. This didn’t change my opinion. 22. The Great Gig in the Sky – Pink Floyd What can I say? Dark Side of the Moon is one of the all time classics and this is probably my favourite track from it. Can’t argue with this… woooooooaaaaaooooooaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhwwwoooooooaaaaaaaoooooooaaooohhhhhhoooooaaaao oohhhaahhhoooooooooooaaaaaahhhhhhaaaahhhhaaaaooooooo… 23. Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space – Spiritualized Jason Pierce is just a GENIUS!!! Love this song, love everything JP has been involved in (Spaceman 3 were great too) Incidentally, do you have th actual CD album AoWW? Best packaging of an album ever, by a mile! Moving Pictures – The Cribs - Great song, one of the slower ones on the track and more sheen on it than im used to with a Cribs track but still fantastic. 8 03. Need One – Martina Topley Bird (ft. QotSA) - Unfortunately couldn't find this track. Funny name for a lass though. 04. Feeling Good – Muse - I fooking hate Muse, im glad this hasn't scarred my laptop memory. -10 05. A Martyr For My Love For You – White Stripes - Could only find a live version on the net so inevitably it loses that certain White Stripeyness aout it cos its just not vicious and loud enough to bite. Lyrically good and i enjoyed it but would need the cd b-side version really. 06. Second Chances – Paper Route - Couldn't find this either. 07. Catch – The Cure - Couldn't find a version of this but i've heard it before and from my memory its an ok tune that didn't hit the heights of songs like Exploding Boy or Love Cats Not bad though ... i think. 7 08. I'm On Fire – Bat For Lashes - This'd be my 4th different version of the same song owning the original Springsteen as well as the Cash cover and a Big Country cover too, i drew the line at Tori Amos. As good as all the other covers but still not as good as the original. 6 18. Bloodstream – Stateless - A bit meh tbh. 5 19. Cry Mississippi – Helicopter Girl - Couldnae find this un either. 20. If You Stayed Over – Bonobo - Wasn't the biggest fan of Fez's Bonobo song if i remember rightly and i couldnt find this im afraid. 21. The Great Gig In The Sky – Pink Floyd - I dislike Pink Floyd you can call this sacrilige but fook it i don't care. 2/10 23. Ladies & Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space - Spiritualized - I've never gotten into these before. MIserable bastard is all i can say. 4 Do they smoke grass in space or do they smoke astroturf? Sorry i digress just got the Flight Of The Conchords album . Not so bad, early promise faded but picked up a tad in the middle. 6/10
