Thracian Posted 14 April 2008 Posted 14 April 2008 Stearman's still got some improving to do and playing in a better side will help that but he's been our Player of the Season this campaign and Saturday's reaction reflected what he's shown all along. Good or bad Stearman never hides and never opts out of trying to make something happen. Anyone can huff, puff and pass the ball sideways to give someone else responsibility. But Stearman is one of the few who gives 90 minutes of maximum effort and he never stops going up and down that flank defending, supporting people and trying to make something happen with what are considerable skills for a full-back. I'd have far sooner have him captain than Clemence or Kisnorbo, though you'd never fault Kisnorbo for lack of effort. Stearman knew Saturday's game was absolutely vital. We could have won it, should have won it but didn't win it. No we're not down yet but you cannot keep squandering the chance of points - and against such an awful side as Colchester - and expect it not to rebound on you in the end and Stearman clearly sensed that. We've trusted our future to experience - Holloway was flying his true colours Saturday - and the outcome has been almost a mirror image of last season with our inability to score enough goals, support in numbers or do things at a pace which pulls opponents apart, costing us dearly. Howard's been our Horsfield, Oakley our Jarrett, Clapham our Nils and little has changed in the heart of defence where our distribution is the first source of our outfield shortcomings. Stearman is one of the few to show any urgency and invention. Hume has been another when fit which hasn't been often enough lately. Weso's a third but Holloway shows little faith in him cos, given choice, he always opts for his old uns. It's one of the reasons I'll be glad to see the back of him. One of several.
Raj Posted 14 April 2008 Posted 14 April 2008 I doubt I was the only person at the match yesterday afternoon who saw Richard Stearman's reaction after the final whistle. What did those who saw it make of it? Personally I thought he looked pathetic. Slumped on the ground as if relegation had been confirmed there and then, picked up by McAuley only to slump back to the ground moments later, the last player out on the pitch clapping the fans with his chin on his chest and then walking towards the tunnel dragging his feet and swinging his arms. I'm not a Stearman-hater so this isn't just a dig because it's him, I just don't like to see our players acting as if it's all over and they've got no fight left in them. He cares. How would you feel if you thought some of the others were laughing and joking after this shite result. Were you at the game? were you miserable on the way home? Did you feel that as a City fan that was inept and it was probably the first nail in the coffin? Well,im sure Stearman did too. He probably feels like he's bashing his head against a wall being in the same team as people who don give a fcuk as much as him.
Rocky Dennis Posted 14 April 2008 Posted 14 April 2008 There is just no pleasing some people, from what ive heard over the last few months..Stearman has been a leading light in the side...and the fact that the guy actually CARES enough to be dejected...something im very happy to hear. Its up to the club to lift him for next weeks game and hope he performs as well as he can. For all those people here who say the players are just turning up for the money...then Stearman shoes the passion and emotion and people whinge. FFS...get up...support the team...support the kid, when we make the premier league...he will be a hero of the club. I dont care what you say...CITY ARE STAYING UP !!! The Premier League!! At this rate Stearman will be in his 30's when that happens.
the beange Posted 14 April 2008 Posted 14 April 2008 My thoughts on stearman are that he genrally wants to win games and work hard for them, But he seems one of only a select few players that do and if a team is going to win games they all need to think like he has been doing and hendrie, He (stearman) for me was easily one of the players working hard to keep us up on saturday.

Yes, I was at the game and I was miserable on the way home but what pisses me off is that I've seen players out around town on Saturday nights after inept performances (1-0 defeat against Burnley at home earlier this season springs to mind) laughing and joking around, Stearman included. I remember going up to Stearman that night and said I was a season ticket holder and he said he didn't know why I bothered! It's not surprising that I can't help but think this is a pathetic show of emotion on his part. Too little too late possibly. I've got nothing against players going out, they're human beings but comments like that aren't what you want to hear from the people you spend time and money watching!
Father Ted Posted 14 April 2008 Posted 14 April 2008 he stayed on the pitch to hear the results, was gutted to hear we are fooked and is a local lad. Those that call him pathetic are just twats. If anybody is going to save us it will be him. If anything this could motivate to become a great player or he could just crack up under the pressure and fall away. This could be the make or break situation of his career. I think Ollie needs to motivate him. On another note - when the players came out after half-time, the only 2 players that I saw that were wanting to win and were pumped up were Hendo and Stearman. Everybody elses heads were down. We need to get Gerry in there at half-time to motivate them - while Ollie still does the tactics (even though he ain't got a clue). At least Taggs will motivate them, he played in a winning team full of leaders like Walsh, Elliot, Lennon, Savage, Izzet. And would you be more scared if Taggart was shouting at you or Holloway?? COME ON CITY! SHOW SOME PASSION AND PUT YOUR BODY ON THE LINE!

I suggested Beaglehole/Taggart as caretakers because there was no way Beaglehole might have got a chance on his own but I'm a long way from being convinced about Taggart. He seems very quiet on the touchline and if he cannot get a perfectly reasonable and experienced side to beat Port Vale Reserves it's hardly a recommendation. A much younger side got a whacking at Bradford Reserves so I think the managerial apprenticeship has some distance to go yet because, while there were signs of progress just after Christmas, there is no hint that Taggart is going to deliver anything like the consistency in the reserves that Beaglehole managed with the Academy. People might say it doesn't matter at that level but it would matter to me. All lesser managers/coaches should be viewed as potential first team staff and their entire professional existence should be geared towards producing first team material.

They come out for the 2nd half and look as if they couldn't give a monkeys what happened. I was absolutely fuming in my seat. If you can't do it at home with two games to go against a team of muppets, what chance do you have? It was a disgrace. The lot of 'em bar a few need clearing out. Me feels that your final comment is too little, too late. I hope I'm proved wrong.

I'm not really on about Taggart's managerial skill, I was more on about Taggart giving the players a b*llocking at half-time as it seems Holloway isn't up to it. Or someone like Walshy. Someone with real passion and fight. Just like Roy Keane is doing at Sunderland.

But unfortunately, this seemed to upset some of the players. And we can't be having that obviously.
Tommy G Posted 14 April 2008 Posted 14 April 2008 im sure it was down to him actually giving a shit about LCFC

Bollockings only work for a short time unless you know what you're talking about and have some answers. Then you don't need to scream and shout - you can deliver your message as quietly and inconspicuously as you like. As I imagine Roy Keane does most of the time. Because Keane would probably be more menacing talking quietly than ranting anyway.
Monk Posted 14 April 2008 Posted 14 April 2008 I like Stears and to be honest he is the least of our worries. He wasn't at fault for the goal we conceeded and apart from a couple of stray balls he wasn't at fault for us not scoring until 89 minutes either.
Corky Posted 14 April 2008 Posted 14 April 2008 Stearman was upset, he cares deeply about our club, and was disappointed that after running his socks off for 90 minutes we only got a draw against the worst side in the division. Criticise him when he is laughing and joking about it, not now. He may not be the best player in the world, but he tries his best and cares so I don't think he deserves to be called "pathetic".

I can understand you being pissed off with that attitude maybe at the time he was under the influence and dint realise what he was saying(under the influence perhaps of other players who REALLY dont give a fcuk and he was just playing up to them!) perhaps on saturday reality really was beginning to hit home that this local lad may be in the history books for the wrong reason.
davieG Posted 14 April 2008 Posted 14 April 2008 I see he put in both crosses on Saturday the one for Hayles to score that was disallowed, although not off-side apprarently and the one that led to the Hume goal.
