Tommy G Posted 15 April 2008 Posted 15 April 2008 Rio Ferdinand has agreed a new five-year contract with Manchester United, according to his agent. The 29-year-old representative, Pini Zahavi, told the Daily Express: "Rio is very happy there, he wanted to stay at United and they wanted him to stay. "Of course he could have gone to another club, but he did not want to." Zahavi added that he thought the deal, which is believed to be worth £130,000-a-week, will not be the defender's last at Old Trafford. He feels Ferdinand can continue playing into his next decade and surpass the remarkable achievement of Italy and AC Milan legend Paolo Maldini, who is still playing at the highest level, aged 39. "I believe he can play longer than Maldini - and they believe so at Manchester United as well," said Zahavi. Ferdinand has two years remaining on his current contract and talks over an extension had been planned for the summer. However, it seems those negotiations have been brought forward and reports suggest Ferdinand now needs only to sign the new agreement. Signed from Leeds for a British record £30m in 2002, Ferdinand has become the key figure in United's defence and has formed an excellent partnership this season with Nemanja Vidic. From BBC Football Is he worth that amount each week? They should reward Vidic with the same contract as neither of them are as good without the other. However..definately the best central defensive pairing in the Premiership, if not the world in terms of club football.

Stevosevic Posted 15 April 2008 Posted 15 April 2008 As the saying goes, your worth whatever somebody is willing to pay.
Tevez Posted 15 April 2008 Posted 15 April 2008 They (Rio and Vidic) make Terry and Carvalho look shit.
Benjani Posted 15 April 2008 Posted 15 April 2008 It's worth every penny if it's going to get 76,000 or whatever it is in Old Trafford.
davieG Posted 15 April 2008 Posted 15 April 2008 It's worth every penny if it's going to get 76,000 or whatever it is in Old Trafford. So there wouldn't be 76000 there if Rio didn't play for them
Tommy G Posted 15 April 2008 Author Posted 15 April 2008 So there wouldn't be 76000 there if Rio didn't play for them I'd say Ronaldo is who pulls the spectators in. I'd pay £40 to watch ronaldo himself let alone the whole Utd team
Benjani Posted 15 April 2008 Posted 15 April 2008 So there wouldn't be 76000 there if Rio didn't play for them No, they wouldn't get 76,000 if they wern't as good a team as they are. Good players = success = fans
SamL Posted 15 April 2008 Posted 15 April 2008 If I'm honest, I think that's a ridiculous amount of money. But compared to other top players, it's probably about right.
Tommy G Posted 15 April 2008 Author Posted 15 April 2008 To be fair once he gets taxed on that bad boy he ONLY comes out with £76,814.32 per week* How does he survive! *excludes any other income e.g. spornsorship, tv etc
sdb Posted 15 April 2008 Posted 15 April 2008 hmm, as has been said, nobody's worth that but he is (imo) the best centre back around at the moment

Raj Posted 15 April 2008 Posted 15 April 2008 This is one of the reasons the average bloke on the terraces is starting to fall out of love with football. When the economy faces a bad time and people have to watch what they spend money on and cut back on things, footballers earning 100k+ a WEEK is just appauling. I know he pays shed loads of tax and stuff but im sure they dont give a fcuk about that when their accountants can get that back from VAT etc...thats partly why the fcukers have a new big car every month!!! Kieron Dyer on 50,000+ a week!!!
Joe. Posted 15 April 2008 Posted 15 April 2008 This is hardly surprising is it? There's a few players now who are on this kind of money, and it won't be long until many more will be too.

MikeyT Posted 15 April 2008 Posted 15 April 2008 Its an obscene amount to be payed! Its disgusting!!!!
Samilktray Posted 15 April 2008 Posted 15 April 2008 Dont hate, congratulate. You've just been merked.
Unit Posted 15 April 2008 Posted 15 April 2008 I'm on 4.60 an hour, i do more work than that lazy shit.
Darkzzz_ Posted 16 April 2008 Posted 16 April 2008 I would certainly not complain being on that amount, but sometimes it does make me mad when all you see is footballers thinking they can make there own laws because they are on stupid amounts of cash!!! They will never cap it because of how much money is generated through the game.... people are making money off people.... screw the normal folk....!! They will come and watch the games still!! Some of the players i have paid to watch AND they were worth it are Messi, Henry, Ronaldinho,Xavi, Joaquin. Torres, Ronaldo (fat one) Juninho (Boro, Ripped Leicester apart in 1997 filbert street) Di canio (class on his day) etc etc And then there are the ones who really do piss me off and i have seen them ( not by choice) Pascal Cygan( Numpty) Jesper Gronkjaer ( He was shit at Athletico Madrid), Lee Bowyer,Florin Raducioiu(shit at west ham) Temuri Ketsbaia........ They are just a few.... i could go on and on and on about the bad ones....I could even mention junior lewis and lee marshall who were still earning good money here for doing fook all!!!

All the clubs fault. You can't fault the players for taking the crazy amounts the clubs offer can you?
Sods Posted 16 April 2008 Posted 16 April 2008 The average person won't get £130,000 until about 6 years and a bit. Madness.
Tommy G Posted 16 April 2008 Author Posted 16 April 2008 All the clubs fault. You can't fault the players for taking the crazy amounts the clubs offer can you? Exactly, you're hardley going to turn it down! Blame the clubs I agree though that money can turn players into arrogant, self riteous bastards. But then again that can happen to anyone who has a bit of cash, not just footballers. The media doesn't help either I guess.
