James. Posted 19 April 2008 Posted 19 April 2008 My new thing. Can't get enough. And for that I primarily thank Hairy. I downloaded the Groundation back catalogue and it is totally and utterly sublime. Apart from Scratch Perry, Fat Freddy's Drop, Roots Manuva's excellent Dub Come Save me and obviously Bob I'm kind of new to the genre... recommendations and discussion wanted.
lildave3 Posted 20 April 2008 Posted 20 April 2008 I want to be hooked up. Anything involving reggae i'm well up for.
Jay Posted 20 April 2008 Posted 20 April 2008 may I point you in the direction of 2 of the best record labels about. Pressure Sounds and Blood and Fire some of my personal top choices include in no particular order.. Lloyd Parks Mafia on this is just awesome. you may find that buy just clicking on the Pressure Sounds link at the top you can find loads of great stuff on the player they have on the main page. Those 2 labels and at the forefront of reissuing old reggae and do loads of samplers and compilation albums that you can't go wrong with at all with so many undiscovered tunes on I don't know if you do "legal downloads" but it might be worth you subscribing to emusic as pressure sounds are on there with loads of albums to discover
Trav Le Bleu Posted 20 April 2008 Posted 20 April 2008 And may I point you in the direction of the Easy Star All-Stars. Ok, so both their albums are cover versions, but they are the best cover version ever in that they take records and completely change them. I refer, of course to Dub Side of the Moon (cover of Dark Side of the Moon) and Radiodread (cover of OK Computer) ai'riiii?
Daggers Posted 20 April 2008 Posted 20 April 2008 Linton Kwesi Johnson - Dredd Beat and Blood & Forces of Victory King Tubby - Dub from the roots
frenzal Posted 20 April 2008 Posted 20 April 2008 Max Romeo - Best Of Mad Professor vs Ruts DC - Rhythm Collision Dub Mad Professor vs Massive Attack - No Protection Peter Tosh - Gold Collection There's loads, buy/download a Trojan Records box set...that was how I got into Ska/Dub/Reggae.
BigGibbo Posted 20 April 2008 Posted 20 April 2008 The biggest current artist is Mavado biggest track "Dying" (awesome) & current track "On The Rock". He might be edging a bit to much towards Dancehall for what you're asking for though? Also Collie Buddz he's similar to Mavado. Best of British General Levy, A legend of the scene & I don't think any connection with the General Barrington Levy Under mi sensi is his biggest classic. If these are on the right tracks I know several more!
James. Posted 21 April 2008 Author Posted 21 April 2008 Cheers all for the recommendations. TLB I already have Easy Star All Stars (risky but ultimately very good cover versions). Massive Attack - No Protection was a good call, haven't heard that for ages and I'm also currently in the process of getting some King Tubby as well as some of the other stuff you've all suggested.
Daggers Posted 21 April 2008 Posted 21 April 2008 Black Uhuru - Brutal Dub is something I have grown to love immensely.
hairy Posted 21 April 2008 Posted 21 April 2008 Linton Kwesi Johnson - Dredd Beat and Blood & Forces of VictoryKing Tubby - Dub from the roots Good call Augustus Pablo - King Tuby Meets Rockers Uptown and Firehouse are both worth a download if you like the 70s dub thing
Jordan Posted 27 April 2008 Posted 27 April 2008 Re: dub, I'm a big fan of Scientist's early work. Great album names and artwork, too
Deathside Posted 4 May 2008 Posted 4 May 2008 Not really my thing these days but a long while back when I lived in a smokey haze I was into pretty much anything on the On-U Sound label - Adrian Sherwood was an amazing producer when it came to dub The best On-U Sound album IMHO was Starship Africa by Creation Rebel Special thanx to Frenzal for mentioning Ruts DC V Mad Professor - Rhythm Collision
frenzal Posted 11 May 2008 Posted 11 May 2008 "June, 27 2008 at LEICESTER SKAFEST - PAMA INTERNATIONAL / SLACKERS / PIETASTERS / SPLITTERS / MUNGOS HIFI @The Park, Leicester, " More ska than reggae and dub but worth getting down to if there's any fans about, not least for The Slackers.
