Holloway challenges Foxes players

_44606616_holloway2_getty203.jpgManager Ian Holloway says Leicester's players must "fight until they drop" as they look to avoid relegation.

Southampton's away draw at West Brom on Monday means the Foxes are only out of the drop zone on goal difference.

And only a win over high-flying Stoke in the final game of the season will ensure they stay in the Championship.

"It's vital we stay up," he told BBC Radio Leicester. "This will be the hardest week of the players' lives but they must face up to the challenge."

The Foxes face a daunting trip to automatic promotion-hopefuls Stoke on Sunday while Saints have a home game against play-off chasing Sheffield United.

Holloway added: "We have got to fight until we drop. We've got to go to Stoke and get something.

"That is not an easy scenario. I'm devastated. We could have been out of this.

"But we haven't won two games on the spin all season which is disgusting."

City midfielder Matt Oakley said consistency had been the main problem for the Foxes but hoped the side would raise their game against the Potters.

"One minute we're up and one minute we're down," he said. "We can't put a string of results together.

"Hopefully the results will go right for us and we'll get a bigger performance on Sunday."

I expect the city players to give us all £1000 if we loose and £1000 if we win.

Looking forward to sunday :thumb:

How about the fans challenge Holloway to getting his f**king tactics right?

If the players need motivating for a game like this then there's something seriously wrong with the club. Oh yeah there IS something seriously wrong with the club. This makes it all the more important that the tactics are spot on.

This game is as much about Holloway's performance during the game as the players, if not more so.

I'm sick of hearing or reading whatever this guy has to say. It's all hyperbole and rhetoric if it isn't stating the bleeding obvious.

I'm waiting for him to come out and say "Relegation is sometimes for the best".

I think 'fight until you drop' is a rather unfortunate choice of phrase given the circumstances

I was thinking the same.

Perhaps if he played players in correct positions and didn't make confusing tactical decisions we wouldn't be in this position this coming sunday.

Ah but remember, he's always telling us about the "square pegs in round holes" problems he has suffered. The holes HE dug, and still continues to put square pegs in.

The other one the marketing department are working considering is:

League One - going boldly where we've never gone before

Okay, that's fair enough.

But why go spoil the motivational speech by trying to lay a guilt trip on the players?

They're low in confidence, this kind of emotional manipulation is innapropriate in the circumstances. Maybe it was warranted at times previously, but not now. Right now the team need to be told that they're strong, that they're good enough, that they have what it takes to go to Stoke and get a result.

Maybe a guilt trip is what they need. Only they will know why they play well one week then poorly the next.

To be honest with you I wish he would stop the media soundbites and get on with the job quietly.

But he's done the whole 'guilt trip' thing plenty of times in the past, regardless of whether it was warranted or not, and it doesn't seem to have had the desired result.

They don't need to go to Stoke feeling like naughty children who have got to buck up their ideas. The team need to go to Stoke with an iron will, a mental strength that we've not witnessed in them before.
