From the Merc

This week is decision time for new Leicester City manager Nigel Pearson as he

judges who will be on his pre-season tour.

Players old and new in his squad will need to show up well in training sessions and in the first pre-season friendly at Hinckley United on Saturday to earn their places on the plane to Slovenia the following day when the work will become more intensive.

Inevitably, trimming the numbers to 22 from around 30 currently working through the first days of training will be the first guide to Pearson's thinking. He said: “In some cases, it will be a tough decision. By the end of the week I will have an idea of the 20 or 22 players I will be taking.

“I have been very pleased with the way all the players have applied themselves and shown the right attitude. There is a new regime and people want to do well, I am sure.

“But, having said that, there is a realisation that there is a job to do this season and the players have shown the right response.

“Unfortunately, places are limited and the onus is on the players to show what they can do although, because of the logistics, some will miss out.”

New signings Michael Morrison, Nicky Adams and Lloyd Dyer look sure to be on the plane.

But Pearson added: “There might be three or four new players in by then, but I am not going to make changes for the sake of it. I have also got a responsibility to get the best out of those already here and I want to do that.

“I think we still have a number of very good players here who have got a point to prove. I don't want to talk at any length about last season but there are going to be questions asked of us. You can't get away from the fact that people are waiting to see what our reaction is and how we are going to put the situation right.”

Those left behind when the squad jet out will not be totally cast adrift because Pearson is mindful of how a long, hard season takes a toll on resources.

He said: “Even if they are part of the initial cut, that doesn't mean they are out the picture. They still have to show the right attitude and application because, in the course of a 46-game league season and cup ties, there will be opportunities, maybe when you least expect it.

“My philosophy is the players have to be ready, for themselves as much as anybody. If they are not, well, that is up to them.”

Again, really impressed with the method and the things he is saying.... it's weird but Pearson doesn't seem to have really been in the spotlight since getting here, I've seen more reports about transfers and Mandaric than the manager himself. But from what I've read so far I think he's going about things the right way. Particularly pleased with the bit in bold, I feel it's something that Holloway never really thought about.

Agreed. So far he's making all the right moves and I just hope they work out in the long-term run of things. I like the fact he hasn't been in the spotlight whilst he's been here, probably means he can just get on with his own job easier.

I don't think so, no.

I thought they were going to try and arrange a couple of games against local teams there, not 100% sure about that though.

I don't have a clue, I have not heard that. :dunno:

I think it's just a bit like a La Manga trip but to Slovenia.

It will, essentially, be a training trip, but moves are being made to fix up some action against a couple of Slovenian First Division clubs in what is a rather hastily-organised venture in the wake of Pearson's arrival two weeks ago.

From the mercury last week.

Leicester City will take part in their second friendly of the pre-season campaign when they face Slovenian side Olympia this evening (Wednesday).

The hastily arranged training game will take place in Ljubliana - kick off 6pm local time.

City boss Nigel Pearson said: "It will be another training game but different from the first one at Hinckley because I will be making only a few changes rather than a complete new line-up in the second half.

"The work so far has gone very well and everyone is settling in together as a group - both staff and players.

"This game will be important to have a look at certain players, especially Aleksander Tunchev in a match for the first time since he joined us.

"It will certainly help him get to know the rest of the players and we may try a few experiments in some positions but it will definitely be a useful outing for us."

The Foxes will go through a light training session in the morning before travelling to Ljubliana in the afternoon.

The squad will then return to their mountain-based training camp later tonight before taking up their regular training schedule again on Thursday.

A report and pictures will be available here on the official website following the game.

Olympia ply their trade in the Slovenian second division, with five former home international from the country's golden generation to boast in their squad.

League Two side Notts County gained a 2-1 victory over Olympia in Germany on Monday evening.
