Ideal first car?

but life is all about taking risks bellend sebastian, calculated risks are a pre requisite to climb up the slippery ladder of success!

I didn't see that at the time, it's very profound.

The current Corsa won car of the year when it came out, but since then I've not read that much positive about them, including from actual owners. New Fiesta looks very nice to my untrained eye, but the write-ups are not universally glowing. I'm not sure what the best small car is supposed to be at the moment

Im on the lookout for my 1st car , needs to be no more than £700 and something small Punto , corsa , fiesta etc

When you're spending that sort of money, don't be too fussy. You'd be better off buying a dull car that's been well looked after by some old bloke than a knackered hot hatch that's been thrashed by some boy racer. The important thing is to find something that's been looked after well. There are plenty of good motors to be had in that price bracket - sorting them out from the thousands of shit ones is the challenge

A Micra sounds perfect, i'd be delighted if I smashed one of them up.

Just don't get a Ford Ka or Nissan Micra. Ridiculously gay small cars.

I found that Rovers are quite good value for small cars - ususally big cars are much better value when it gets down to this price because there's less demand but because Rovers have an exaggerated reputation the 214/25 is actually really cheap. Make sure the coolant level & temps are stable, the radiatior fan kicks in etc. and check it regularly to catch any issue before they kill the engine and its a fine little car. Peugeot 306 and the Fiesta are both very good, but tend to hold their value. For the love of god though, not a Corsa. The latest ones are meant to be good but the older models are dismal.

I have my test booked in October so I am looking for something which I can practice in. I will use the same car when I eventually pass. I'm looking in the direction of a Fiesta, though if I could find a reliable small french car, I would be interested. Thats the thing though, a reliable French car?

I've got an old Fiesta and it hasn't let me down yet, but at that price range just look at the service history, previous owners and go for something thats done 30-50k miles IMO. Any less than 30k means it's spent too much time rusting in a garage and more than 50k ain't disastrous but each 10k increases the probability of problems, as a rule of thumb.

My Fiesta is 15 years old but I've had no real problems with it, and it had only done 43k miles which I think helped.

And for type, you know the score really I reckon, Peugeot 106/206, Fiesta, Corsa, Punto, that kinda size. Engine of no more than 1.3l and that.

Couple of examples which I'd look at.

Fantastic help!

My main choice at the moment is still a Fiesta, I would like a Zetec one but it is more to insure, though the whatcar review says that it is better to avoid the 1.3 petrol models, I would be intersted in looking at them anyway. I have been looking at a very useful website for checking all of the different possible faults when you go to look at Fiestas. (Link if anyone is interested.) I will be looking at cars that are up to 80k miles (having said that a friend of mine has one with roughly 95k on the clock and thats been running well). What do you think of this? I would be interested to see why it has had to be resprayed and I would do all the checks that I can but if it works well I think thats abit of a bargain.

Yeah 50k was a very conservative amount, I should have more just said that it's possible to get a really nice looking car for that price but it might have been run into the ground

That Fiesta looks tidy to me, worth looking at, keep your eyes peeled though.

Yeah will do, I'll be looking at many different options as well as getting people I know to see if they know anyone that can help me. Always handy to have useful contacts :). I'll let people know if and when I get something in case they would like to refer back to it in the future.

What about a Fiat 500?

Nice cars, but out of my £800 budget.

I bought a Fiat Punto about a year ago now, still got it but it's been a pain in the arse, pretty unreliable so best to steer clear of them.

Thanks for the advice. :)

What does the grouping take into account? I would've thought Corsas ands Clios would have been in a higher group, they tend to be mostly driven by young drivers.
