Basingstoke Fox Posted 19 May 2008 Posted 19 May 2008 What would be an ideal first car for a 17/18 year old, im not looking to buy one just yet as I dont have the money and im not evem 17 untill sunday! But I have been looking around on AutoTraders at small cars with small engines: Corsa, Fiesta, 106, Clio etc. And I wouldnt want to spend any more than £1000 on my first car. Any recommendations?

SOCCERROO FOX Posted 19 May 2008 Posted 19 May 2008 Something big and with a bit of grunt, as most 17/18 year olds are crap drivers so at least if they get in an accident they just hurt the other car and not theres

So, the cars you mention are all sound, Corsa, Peugeot (my youngest bro-in-law has a decent 205 and even the smaller engines are nippy!) maybe a fiat (I remember when they were rust-buckets, and I know they've improved, but it takes time for stuff like that to fade away) I'd go Peugeot out of those. Or, wildcard - if you are mechanically minded and want a lot of fun - a mini! (Old kind obviously - the new ones are nice cars, but they aren't mini's and they aren't in the spirit of the original mini (a car for the working man on the street - now they're just small BMWs)
Number 6 Posted 19 May 2008 Posted 19 May 2008 I hate rich 17 year olds. I could never afford the insurance so at 20 still have no car. I always wanted a robin reliant though. Wanted something different to everyone else instead of being in the corsa club.

Number 6 Posted 19 May 2008 Posted 19 May 2008 You can get cheaper insurance by putting one of your parents as a named driver. It might not be as cheap as t'other way round but means you can build up some no claims.

I have the car registered under them but me as the named driver so i still get a good rating (no claims yet touch wood) and it is plenty cheaper more than half
General Smuts Posted 19 May 2008 Posted 19 May 2008 I hate rich 17 year olds. I could never afford the insurance so at 20 still have no car. In exactly the same boat. I drive mummy's car.
SOCCERROO FOX Posted 19 May 2008 Posted 19 May 2008 My front drivers side window fell out of my car today ( which is now yesterday) i managed to put it back in thankfully as i was due to park at the train station.

SOCCERROO FOX Posted 19 May 2008 Posted 19 May 2008 I don't think thats standard car behaviour!!! My beast formerly known as Boony is slowly doing weird things but its still a good car
MC Prussian Posted 19 May 2008 Posted 19 May 2008 I'd never, ever buy a car at that age. Go for public transportation. Oh wait, you're living in the U.K.
Basingstoke Fox Posted 19 May 2008 Author Posted 19 May 2008 I'd never, ever buy a car at that age.Go for public transportation. Oh wait, you're living in the U.K. I hate public transport, its a rip off considering its always late, you have to wait for an hour after you finish work on sundays usually in the freezing cold, you cant get to places as easilyas you could if you had a car (e.g. the Walkers) , you cant have a conversation on the phone without everyone looking at you and my bus station is a treck away from my college And thanks to the 1 or 2 good suggestions, no thanks to the Panda
Basingstoke Fox Posted 19 May 2008 Author Posted 19 May 2008 I love volkswagens but I doubt I have enough money to get insured on one
dandannieldanok Posted 19 May 2008 Posted 19 May 2008 I passed a few weeks ago and I drive around in my mum's corsa, P-reg, I think it's either 1.4 or 1.6 litre engine. I find it a great little car, so much easier to drive than the car I learned in and although I can't be sure (because I'm not paying it my self ), I think the insurance is pretty cheap(ish) too.
The People's Hero Posted 19 May 2008 Posted 19 May 2008 Forget all this. Get the fastest, best looking car you can find/afford.

Thats probably because your on your mums insurance, but a 1.4? nice one!
JoeyB Posted 19 May 2008 Posted 19 May 2008 I borught me a 02 punto for £1800. cheap Insurance cost more than the car, bloody rip off merchants i tell ya
Scow Posted 19 May 2008 Posted 19 May 2008 Do what I did. Pass at the age of 23 and get fully comp insurance for £600. My first and current car is a Corsa 1.2 N Reg. It doesn't like motorways.
