Ideal first car?

Lets be honest if you don't start with a polo you're a bit of an arse. Mine was a P reg, 7 months and no problems, sold for same price I brought it which was £850...If you want something unreliable, thirsty and stressful but ever so often utterly magnificent get a megane coupe. Getting rid of mine very soon it'll be emotional, currently sharing a 58 plate polo with my sister when I'm back from uni...amazing drive so easy.

What does the grouping take into account? I would've thought Corsas ands Clios would have been in a higher group, they tend to be mostly driven by young drivers.

It's just one of the things insurance companies take into account, I guess it's done on power. Obviously they'll take into account your age and driving experience as well, but it'll cost you less to insure a group 1 car than a group 3 or a group 20.

My insurance has cost me about £2,500. Got my 10th and final payment at the end of september though and it'll be a lot lot less next year. Not as low as someone that has been driving for years, but more around the £1000 mark.

Digressing a little here but that sounds like a great progession to me, kinda thing I wanna look at next time I go for a car.

My mate started with a Corsa, then got a 1.6l Astra after a year or so, will probably end up with something with about a 2.0l engine in a couple of years, and it don't sound like a bad way of going if you can afford it.

I was lucky that insurance gave me £750 for my Corsa, had a bit of money in the bank and then I looked what kind of difference this would have on my insurance given the claim. The difference was £300 over the year and now my insurance costs £1.5k which for lad my age isn't too bad. It's a 1999 model though...T reg. I do reckon there's going to be a catalogue of problems at MOT though this year...I can just tell in the drive...I have been a bit forceful with him. Interestingly considering a moped for work....like one of the dudes in Barcelona, flying about on that everywhere.

it amazes me how any youngster can insure their car these days, my insurance has never been over 300 quid (or there abouts). 214 quid at the moment.

Of course I wanted an MGB but the insurance story never changes for 17 year olds

That number plate is perfect for anyone who loves bridges.

I'd love a classic car though joking aside, finding one that isn't a rotbox is expensive and difficult however.

Corsa's seem to be the car of choice with most of my friends. I had a MkIIII Golf (1.6 Litres) and it was a beaut to drive. I'm going to buy a Corsa at around Christmas as I'll have my new no claims bonus

The older style Corsa is a dreadful car. Awful to drive.

I agree. I've got an M reg and I've been driving for about a month now, when I step out my instructor's car into mine it's just terrible.

No power steering, nothing really from the engine to give, and a 4 speed gearbox.

Woeful.

God knows. Determined not to go on my parents insurance too, its 1.3 5 door, funny thing is everyone told me afterwards, "why didn't you shop around?", I did, it was the cheapest. It would have cost more on Third party Fire and Theft aswell. It could be to do with me living less than a mile away from town too.

Well I finnally have my first car. A Ford Fiesta Zetec 1999. I'm paying for the insurance monthly with Quinn Direct, going to come to nearly 2k! I think its a really nice little car, but it hasn't got tax so I'm going to wait till Tuesday to tax it. So annoying waiting though!!

My car :).

The insurance is just about over average for any young driver.

There cant be an average price of insurance when it comes to young drivers, because of the variable power of cars. One young driver may have a 1L, another a 1.6L, which is gonna be a huge difference. Only way to get an average is to make all young drivers get the same car.

Mine was £1400 for my first year, that was on a 1L Corsa.
