MC Prussian Posted 19 May 2008 Posted 19 May 2008 Volkswagen FOX.It's the ONLY choice. Good shout, that.
Matt Posted 19 May 2008 Posted 19 May 2008 I miss my first car, Nice Vauxhall Corsa. 1 Litre. Could throw it round corners and it'd glide round but you felt safe in it, It didn't seem lightweight, It felt solid but it'd still fly. Was a great fun car to have....Wouldn't swap it for the car I have always wanted and now have my VW Golf My Golf's an 04 and my everyday "proper" car, but i'm considering and want (At the right price...Being cheap) a MK 1 VW Caddy as my toy.
Tommeh Posted 19 May 2008 Posted 19 May 2008 Get a polo, more specifically my polo. 97 P great condition, loved and adored by all. I was looking for a £1,002 for it but for an FT member I'd probably let it go for a grand.
Miquel The Work Geordie Posted 19 May 2008 Posted 19 May 2008 Just visit this website and sort out all your search criteria in the search boxes. Theres quite a few decent cars on there, and you can search within a certain radius of Leicestershire (or wherever you live). www.motors.co.uk
Floating Fox Posted 19 May 2008 Posted 19 May 2008 I passed a few weeks ago and I drive around in my mum's corsa, P-reg, I think it's either 1.4 or 1.6 litre engine. I find it a great little car, so much easier to drive than the car I learned in and although I can't be sure (because I'm not paying it my self ), I think the insurance is pretty cheap(ish) too. Whenever I ask my mum about doing this (As I have passed but have no car due to insurance costs) she says she'd loose her no claims if I crash... Is that true? And talking of insurance prices. Looked at an S reg Rover Metro today....1800 insurance?!?! Wtf?
Alexikokopops Posted 19 May 2008 Posted 19 May 2008 Do what I did. Pass at the age of 23 and get fully comp insurance for £600.My first and current car is a Corsa 1.2 N Reg. It doesn't like motorways. My insurance is cheaper
Alexikokopops Posted 19 May 2008 Posted 19 May 2008 I've only been driving 3 months. I know, I just wanted to boast
Scow Posted 19 May 2008 Posted 19 May 2008 I know, I just wanted to boast Still got out the Barnsley car park quicker than you.

Is that true? And talking of insurance prices. Looked at an S reg Rover Metro today....1800 insurance?!?! Wtf? I got that same bloody response too, what a joke. I tried saying that i would be a good driver then she just said 17 year old boy...I cant be bothered to argue
Mickyblueeyes Posted 19 May 2008 Posted 19 May 2008 Get one of these: You could probabaly get a good 1 for under a grand or if you push it a couple a hundred may be able to pull out a gem. They're reliable, will last well into 200k millege, hardly need anything doing to them as well. Plus the girls love a beemer ...well the ones you want to be pulling at 17-18!

My mums car is just like that but its a P-Reg. But please explain how someone my age will have a hope in hell of getting insured on a bmw
Number 6 Posted 20 May 2008 Posted 20 May 2008 Get a BMW Isetta: though don't be driving too close to any walls, you'll get stuck in.

Number 6 Posted 20 May 2008 Posted 20 May 2008 It's genius. A car with the door on the front and no reverse gear. Looks a bit similar to that thing Clarkson had on Top Gear.
Tabou Posted 20 May 2008 Posted 20 May 2008 My mums car is just like that but its a P-Reg.But please explain how someone my age will have a hope in hell of getting insured on a bmw Threaten to leave your company if your boss doesnt provide one aninsure it for you. That's what I did. And it worked Saying that, I do have the worlds best boss, who is actually lovely, so I dunno where you would stand. However, Company Car tax is ACTUALLLLY ridiculous. I would say a good option would be to wait until your 18 with a job. then you can get some reet good finance deals with a years free fully comp insurance. Or just bite the bullet, you will have to at some point. Is this the sequel to "Two girls one cup?" One foxestalker and a mug?
Basingstoke Fox Posted 20 May 2008 Author Posted 20 May 2008 Is that Kilworth? looks abit like the guy swearing in that Stoke video
JadeFalcon Posted 20 May 2008 Posted 20 May 2008 buy something thats cheap and cheerful for your first car, as a first time driver on the road the insurance will sting you no matter WHAT car you have even a poxy 1l fiesta will sting you, get something that you wont mind getting a dent in, well something that wont hurt your pocket if you get a dent in it via parking prang or something, least you wont have to claim on the insurance. also get something like a ford fiesta or escort as they are piss cheap to repair and you can find replacement parts bloody everywhere. just as an example garage were going to charge me almost £200 for 2 wishbones and having them fitted, i bought 2 wishbones on ebay for £19 each... fitted them outside my house, simple really, plus the money you save on repairs can be laid out on tools or go towards paying for your insurance i had a parking prang on industrial estate the other week, no kerb and light pole in blind spot, didnt see it, bang, rather than claim on insurance it will be cheaper for me to hunt round a scrapyard and just pick up a replacement boot, also i dont lose no claims bonus as not going through insurance fords love em they have parts everywhere dont use a company car, as when you insure your personal motor you will still get treated as a new driver, as my girlfriends dad found out who never owned anything but a company car
Matt Posted 20 May 2008 Posted 20 May 2008 Just a warning to people going on parents insurances, fair enough if it is the only financial option go for it but when I looked into doing it, It really didn't seem very good, Yes you'd get it 'cheaper' at the time but when it comes to the time when you want/need your own insurance your prices will again be 'cheaper' but because you have none of your own no claims bonuses the price is quite expensive still. My insurance is currently 800 quid, on an 04 Golf so fairly happy with that, 3 (Maybe 4 ) years no claims. I'm on my company insurance, alot of the time it means driving the van () but other times it means driving my bosses brand new Audi A8
act smiley Posted 20 May 2008 Posted 20 May 2008 Agreeing with the "Get your own insurance", costs a bomb to do at first, but pays off long term. Get a cheap car and third party fire and theft insurance and you'll come out ahead, even if you crash it - comprehensive insurance on my car would have been £2300 in the first year, I paid £1500 3PFT - that difference + the £500 excess on the comprehensive cover and its cheaper to do without the extra cover and just buy another car if I'd crashed it into a tree. Fiestas are nice to drive, as are Rover 200's, which are bargains. 306's are pretty good too, though when I was looking 106es were a bit overpriced. Corsas are sturdy inside but a bit crap really. Old Honda Civics are good but because everyone knows they're reliable they're more than other cars which don't have that reputation so a bit overpriced really. One thing is though you can get a heck of a lot more for your money by getting a bigger car - a big old barge of a car can be bought very cheap, has loads of extras you won't get from a cheap small car and often don't tend to cost much more to insure than small cars as the young people that buy them typically aren't the high risk types after their Corsas with big alloys. And talking of insurance prices. Looked at an S reg Rover Metro today....1800 insurance?!?! Wtf? Its always going to be something insane. For a new driver the insurance costs are usually pretty similar for just about anything that isn't absurd. You could probably get a Rover 100, 200,400, 600 or 800 insured for about the same. Don't bother with a Metro/100 though, its cack. You can get a 214 for next to nothing if you feel the need for a Rover and they're much better cars, seeing as they aren't just a really cheap car from 1979 with a bit of new styling. The 400/600 are pretty decent too, as its a Honda Civic/Accord with a Rover engine.
JoeyB Posted 20 May 2008 Posted 20 May 2008 I was on my mum and dads insurance for about a year on 1.6 focus, god it was a great car and cost about £900, now that was cheap, but it guzzled petrol like no tomorrow, and one of my dads mates was selling his punto. Red one <_< 1.2 active 3 door, 02 reg 46k miles £1800, got it what a bargain, only bad thing was insurance is £1946 fully comp, with my mum on it, not that bad tbh. if anyone is looking for a cheapish fully comp try, Liverpool Victoria cheapest one i found and great, even better you dont go through to india when you want to make a claim ::

I mean lets face it the car is always going to break about the day after you've bought it. I haven't driven since I past my test and the way things are going, it'll be a few years before I do get behind the wheel again I hate 17/18 year olds that get everything paid for by their parents then try to start an arguement about EMA payments with me.
