Thracian Posted 27 May 2008 Posted 27 May 2008 I've never before supported strike action over anything. But the lorries drivers stance against the Government's attack on the motorist is to be admired - and the Welsh stance even more to be admired. Before anything gets out of hand the Police should beware of becoming involved in what is a domestic dispute and one where the lorry drivers are perfectly justified in defending their livelihoods. Already there are signs of Police using their muscle against protesters and showing once again that, far from being the protectors of the people, they are the enemy and would do anything they could get away with in support of this misguided and indefensible Government. The tax on petrol is obscene and, even worse, it is so much higher than in other European countries that it is putting our truckers at a severe competitive disadvantage. It's only one example of the pummelling the truckers have had to take, no less than the ordinary motorist. It's a pity the truckers aren't moslems. The Government wouild soon moderate its stance and bend over backwards to be amenable. But at long last the long-suffering, basically law-abiding and respectable British victim is starting to show that enough's enough and if the Police show their contempt for these people I really hope they regret it. This Government has had fair warning that the oil refineries will be blockaded unless they stop deliberately wrecking the the truckies' lives and businesses. What a pity the motorists don't react in kind instead of taking blow after blow like a punchdrunk fight veteran. How I wish the English people would tell Brown and his self-satisfied and self-protected cronies to sod off back to whence they came - Scotland in many cases - where they can spend the rest of their lives campaigning for their own country's independence which they are more than welcome too. They can also take their unfair attitudes and social experiments with them cos they are wilfully wrecking this country and the motivation of so many people in it while wallowing in their own obsene wealth and crafty perks and protections.

Very inclined to agree with you on this. They have my support. (Hang on that's twice in as many days that I've agreed with Thracian!)

Your support is appreciated. Injustice has always got me going. Now I can go back to being the quiet, kind and essentially easy going guy that I really am!
breadandcheese Posted 27 May 2008 Posted 27 May 2008 I think you'll probably find the government will proclaim they are listening by suspending the 2p fuel duty (paid for by the increase in corporation tax receipts of oil company profits). I wouldn't be surprised if the government then alters the balance between fuel duty and VAT so that the haulage companies can reclaim their VAT whilst the general motorist experiences no difference.
Daggers Posted 27 May 2008 Posted 27 May 2008 I fully support the truckers doing this as it prevents them from spending their time murdering hitch-hikers.

And what precisely is the difference between the truckers' businesses being squeezed by punitive fuel taxation and motorists' businesses being squeezed?
lildave3 Posted 27 May 2008 Posted 27 May 2008 Truckers?! We're not american! Anyway, yeah, 'mon the lorry drivers. My old man has just rang me on his way to Ibrox Stadium delivering fence posts and concrete slabs. There's a little bit of info for you. Yeah.

Thracian Posted 27 May 2008 Author Posted 27 May 2008 Is that for a protest? Is he going on protest? Sounds like he's well armed for a bit o' bover!
lildave3 Posted 27 May 2008 Posted 27 May 2008 Is that for a protest? Is he going on protest? No. I hope not anyway.
breadandcheese Posted 27 May 2008 Posted 27 May 2008 And what precisely is the difference between the truckers' businesses being squeezed by punitive fuel taxation and motorists' businesses being squeezed? Don't get me wrong. I see no difference, I am merely speculating on what the government will do. In all honesty, I see the fuel duty as a highly unethical tax on mobility. It hits the end user in the pocket, when in many cases, the person in question has no alternative but to use private transport.
Floating Fox Posted 27 May 2008 Posted 27 May 2008 No.I hope not anyway. Pfffft. Your dads a rebel at heart. Tell him to go protest from me. What else are fences & Concrete blocks for?
lildave3 Posted 27 May 2008 Posted 27 May 2008 Pfffft.Your dads a rebel at heart. Tell him to go protest from me. What else are fences & Concrete blocks for? He said a gangway of some sort. I wasn't really listening if i'm honest, was too busy trying to convince lazy boy Joe to play football
Floating Fox Posted 27 May 2008 Posted 27 May 2008 He said a gangway of some sort.I wasn't really listening if i'm honest, was too busy trying to convince lazy boy Joe to play football Where? Get him to come play down here. Only missing mikey tomorrow, although ground will be slippy as fook!
Monk Posted 27 May 2008 Posted 27 May 2008 The campaign will be to no avail because the treasury has its hands tied in the sense that financially it is fked from years of overspending. I really will enjoy watching this issue exploding like bad egg all over Gordon Brown's sorry mug.
Darkzzz_ Posted 27 May 2008 Posted 27 May 2008 I do feel for them, I work in this field, as i run a transport office here in Kettering, i have so many drivers here really kicking up about the prices, it is not fair, something needs to be done, It will effect us all, we are the consumers who really rely on a lot of goods that these guys are transporting up and down the country!! I hope Darling really puts the pressure on Brown now, i can see a Commons Rumble, because Labour really have put themselves into the bad guy role, no wonder the tories are nabbing seats left, right and centre!! Throw in the Towel Mr Brown!!
lildave3 Posted 27 May 2008 Posted 27 May 2008 Where? Get him to come play down here. Only missing mikey tomorrow, although ground will be slippy as fook! That's what I was trying to do, but today. Are we playing tomorrow now?

I really will enjoy watching this issue exploding like bad egg all over Gordon Brown's sorry mug. It's going to have to line up and take its bloody turn. There's the simply fact of the new car tax coming in which will make everyone with a normal car bought after 200 or 2001 (I can't remember) pay up to an extra £200.00 a year. Cop that middle England. Brown has absolutely lost the plot.

Floating Fox Posted 27 May 2008 Posted 27 May 2008 That's what I was trying to do, but today. Are we playing tomorrow now? No-one told me we were playing today
lildave3 Posted 27 May 2008 Posted 27 May 2008 No-one told me we were playing today Well we're not now. You try and persaude him for tommorrow. I need some sort of Andy/Potter/Damo action this week. Plus I still need my damn ball back.
The People's Hero Posted 27 May 2008 Posted 27 May 2008 You have a real skill Thracian as you have a captive audience here - in fact, a biased argument. You're preaching to the converted and yet you still manage to write an article which is so full of mis-information, cynicism and twaddle that a lot of people will just laugh it off as half-arsed hack output. I especially liked the bit about the police as being suppressers of the people!!!! Protest and strike action in this country works and has NOT been harshly dealt with by the authorities. You're just anti-establishment in every way possible. It's not just the police you berate - not so long ago all traffic wardens were worse than the Gestapo!!??? What next? Firemen are all kiddie-fiddlers? Doctors secretly kill to feast on their victims' eyes? Nurses are the undead with a score to settle? Fu ck sake, you bitter old man. Get some real problems.
Bellend Sebastian Posted 27 May 2008 Posted 27 May 2008 Why can't I do whatever I like, when I like, and why must there be consequences and why isn't everything free? This country etc
