Martin 7.5 (If Hendo got 6.75 for Saturday then Martin deserves a bit more because he had plenty of work to do to keep a clean sheet. One excellent first half save down to his left from a free-kick and a whole series of effective punches and tip ons which eased the danger from a whole series of dangerous mostly inswinging set pieces and one or two decent crosses. Okay he didn't attempt to catch much but I didn't see it was on and what he did was enough. Good debut)

Gilbert 6.5 (Again linked well with Gradel although his passing was a bit laboured. Didn't let Stockport get much joy down the left although his speed of recovery is sometimes a big help).

Hobbs 7.75 (Won a lot of aerial battles and closed the door on the visitors pretty tightly down the middle).

Morrison 7 (Played another sound part in another clean sheet where we offered very few chances to the opposition once again).

Mattock 6.5 (Almost cost us a goal in the opening minutes when he and Adams almost tackled each other but let the Stockport attacker through for a one on one with Martin which should have been a tap in but ended with a chip over the bar. Got beaten a couple more times in moves that led to dangerous crosses but did good things too, including the assist for our goal, and his injury came just at the wrong time for him - a time when he was getting the consistent games he needed to improve his game).

Gradel 8 (Beat his man more often than a chef beats an egg and peppered the visitors with crosses and shots without reward except the knowledge that he was a constant nightmare to his opponents. Fought for everything when he'd lost the ball too. Tireless and a perpetual threat).

Weso 6.25 (Okay at times. Won the ball to start the move which led to the goal but mis-weighted some of his passes and never really took control of midfield)

Kishishev 6 (Again like his midfield partner failed to control the middle convincingly even against 10 men).

Adams 6 (Not at his best. Blew a bit hot and cold on the ball and, unlike Gradel, got drawn inside too much which crowded the game and left Mattock struggling for a wide passing option. Might have made a goal when Howard headed over.)

DJ 5.5 (Disappointing. Put Adams in for a shot that was touched over the bar but otherwise posed little threat)

Howard 7.75 (Well taken opportunist goal, close on a couple of other occasions, set a few chances up and worked hard as the side did generally trying to win back possession)

Subs: Dickov 7 (Lively as ever in his brief appearance. Almost pinched a goal at the near post and then had a driving run where he made space and shot just wide. With his urgency we started to look a real threat until Mattock's injury. Thought he was daft to keep arguing with the ref when he was booked though).

King 7.75 (Masterful throughout his short time on the field. He immediately took control of the centre, his passing was back to its crisp best and his snapshot from the edge of the area had to be brilliantly fingertipped onto the post and wide)

Porter 7 (Complimented King and Dickov by playing his part in some tidy moves. Unlucky to overhit his chip when he left the full-back for dead on the left but he played people in for other opportunities and then showed the soundness of his defensive qualities by operating as a kind of left wing-back once Mattock departed).

Ladies and gentleman, I give you the new Alan Sheehan!

Martin 7 - A clean sheet and had a fair bit to do.

Gilbert 6.5 - Linked well with Gradel, dependable.

Mattock 7 - Good overlapping runs, one mistake but made up for it, speedy recovery Joe.

Hobbs 8.5 - Awesome, won everything.

Morrison 7 - Solid, played well, but was well over-shadowed by Hobbs.

Gradel 7.5 - Always a threat, works hard, tackles back will always play well.

Adams 6 - Very quiet, our left winger this season will always get a low mark, as Gradel sees most of the ball.

Kish 6 - Him and Weso are too similar a player for them both to be starting.

Weso 6 - Tenacious as ever, but just lacked a lot tonight. At the minute King and Oakley are our best CM pairing.

Howard 8 - A goal, won everything, was a good captains performance, with some tireless work.

Dj 6 - Always made runs and looked lively, but the ball seemed to go the other way, every time.

Subs:

Dickov 7 - Same old from Dickov tonight, nearly scored a wonderful goal.

King 7 - Very positive when he came on, nearly scored, nice passing.

Porter 7 - Dyer needs to produce the goods in the next 3-5 games me thinks, Looked good.

I like King, he had a shit game on sat but I think he's worth the perseverance. I don't think you can really say hes the next Sheehan because King is actually half decent even at this early stage. Whereas Sheehan always showed massive flaws in his game from early on.

We'll doubtless disagree forever about Sheehan but again - and I'll add this to the negatives - our free kicks were an embarrassment. Do we have a free-kick specialist? Do we ever practice them. Do we have any idea what we're trying to achieve and do we have anyone with the delivery to achieve it?

You're right, the set-piece delivery was shocking and it was the same story against MK Dons too. The amount of goals that can be potentially scored from set-pieces is large, and we're effectively preventing this from happening with the quality of deliveries at the moment. How hard is it to put a good ball in really?

Clemence is pretty goo at free kicks. If we get him back in the team then theres your free kick taker. He may not be as good at set pieces as Sheehan but he's not far off.

You don't need a free kick specialist or corner delievery expert.

They are very poor at the moment, but then again we nearly scored 3 times from corners tonight. The free kicks have been poor, but someone like Gradel isn't going to shy away from a hit or two. They need to be practised I agree, the whole routine.

Martin - 7 - Made a great save from a free kick in the first half and was always looking to release the ball quickly to set up attacks.

Gilbert - 7 - Strong, rarely got beaten by stockports left mid and him and gradel linked up well together.

Hobbs - 8 - He was strong, good in the air and he passes the ball around well rarely losing it.

Morrison - 8 - Same as Hobbs.

Mattock - 7 - Played well other than the first minute when they nearly scored. Adams never really helped Mattock out tonight he was nearly always going inside rather than hogging the touchline so Mattock had an easy option down the line.

Gradel - 8 - Always looks to take on his man and most the time does. He has to work on his crosses because a lot of them were poor.

Kish - 7 - Passed the ball around well and always looked to get the ball out to the wings so that the wingers could run at there fullbacks.

Weso - 7 - Same as kishishev.

Adams - 6 - He was poor tonight he always tried to do to much rather than doing the simple things and most of his crosses were poor. Also his positioning is poor he was never in the right place and to often he drifted inside.

Howard - 8 - He ran his socks off tonight, he held the ball up well and rarely gave it away. He could of had another goal but his shot went just wide.

Campbell - 5 - Didn't look like he was trying and he isn't strong enough also he was careless with his passing.

Subs -

Dickov - 7 - when he came on he hurried defenders and put them under a lot more pressure than campbell ever did and he nearly scored twice.

King - 7 - Passed the ball around well and tackled well.

Porter - 7 - He looked dangerous when he came on and he did more in 15 minutes than Adams did in 75. Always took on there right back when he had the ball and skinned him every time and put in some dangerous crosses.

Didn't Mattock set up the goal?

Thanks Fez. Mistaken identity which wasn't altogether surprising from the much interrupted view I had of that corner. All altered and player ratings adjusted.

Martin - 6. Excellent save from a free-kick, but not confident on crosses or kicking.

Gilbert - 6. Better in defence than on Saturday, but still has to settle.

Hobbs - 8*. Commanding in defence. Easy to see why Benitez rates him as a long-term successor to Jamie Carragher.

Morrison - 7. Another solid display, looks comfortable at League 1 level.

Mattock. - 6. Very mixed evening - good assist for the winner, but some howlers in defence which better strikers would punish.

Gradel - 6. Not a great performance - saw plenty of the ball, but produced very little with it. How many crosses found a blue shirt?

Wesolowski - 5. After Campbell, the most disappointing player on view, with few passes or tackles of note.

Kishishev - 6. Looked off the pace first half, but improved as match went on. Slightly unlucky to be subbed.

Adams - 6. Not comfortable on the left, but decent taker of corners.

Howard - 6. Scored one and might have had more with a little effort - maybe pacing himself for Saturday.

Campbell - 5. Looked to be going through motions - should watch and learn from Dickov to see what a striker of his type should be doing.

Dickov - 7. Inspirational display - unlucky not to score, and to pick up a VERY harsh injury-time booking.

King - 7. Did more in 20 mins than in 90 on Saturday - solid both in defence and attack.

Porter - 7. A very welcome return, causing problems for Stockport defence before having to move back to cover for Mattock.

What are people's opinions on how long a player can be on the pitch to earn a rating? I need to set a value really - was thinking around the 15 or 20 minute mark.
