purpleronnie Posted 25 August 2008 Posted 25 August 2008 ***So it's not just the olympics then ****Tell all ... Tresco lets the cat out of the bag. Phil Hillyard Poms cheated in 2005 Ashes win August 25, 2008 FORMER England batsman Marcus Trescothick has admitted in a new book he illegally shone the ball by sucking on breath fresheners during the 2005 Ashes series. The virtually unplayable reverse swing generated by pace bowlers Simon Jones and Andrew Flintoff-- which was crucial to England's Ashes triumph over Australia - may have been caused by Murray Mints, which, as with other artificial substances, is illegal. The saliva from these mints aided swinging, Trescothick wrote in his autobiography 'Coming Back To Me'. "I was firmly established as the man in charge of looking after the ball when we were fielding,'' he wrote in an excerpt which appeared in Britain's News of the World newspaper. "It was my job to keep the shine on the new ball for as long as possible with a bit of spit and a lot of polish. "And through trial and error I finally settled on type of spit for the task at hand. "It had been common knowledge in county cricket for some time that certain sweets produced saliva which, when applied to the ball for cleaning purposes, enabled it to keep its shine for longer and therefore its swing.'' Australia left-arm quick Nathan Bracken was verbally lashed by Jones after the 2005 series for suggesting the use of mints was common in English cricket, but he says he was misquoted and did not want to comment, Fairfax media reported. Trescothick, who retired from international cricket in March due to stress-related illness, also used the mints in the 2001 Ashes series and narrowly escaped detection during the Headingley Test. "For the first time, as I dived to gather the ball at square-leg, I landed on my side and a shower of Murray Mints spewed out of my trouser pocket all over the grass right in front of the umpire,'' he wrote. "Fortunately neither he nor the two batsmen seemed to take much notice as I scrambled around on all fours trying desperately to gather in the sweets before they started asking awkward questions.'' It's unlikely cricket's governing body the ICC can open an investigation into alleged ball-tampering, the newspaper added. India's Rahul Dravid was fined half his match fee for rubbing a cough lozenge on the ball during a tri-series one-day match against Zimbabwe in Brisbane in January 2004. AAP And you don't think Ausies have a chip on their shoulder?
SOCCERROO FOX Posted 25 August 2008 Author Posted 25 August 2008 And you don't think Ausies have a chip on their shoulder? Why because i posted it or Trescothick came out and said this after 3 years I'm a cricket fan yes and Australian but what's done is done. Also Purpleronnie with a comment like that i take it you have never been to Australia and are infact a follower with little insight in to Australian socity.
Jimmy Posted 25 August 2008 Posted 25 August 2008 Why because i posted it or Trescothick came out and said this after 3 years I'm a cricket fan yes and Australian but what's done is done if you really think your lot ain't cheating just as much then your an idiot
SOCCERROO FOX Posted 25 August 2008 Author Posted 25 August 2008 if you really think your lot ain't cheating just as much then your an idiot Before calling me an Idiot give me examples of how Australians have cheated
Jimmy Posted 25 August 2008 Posted 25 August 2008 Before calling me an Idiot give me examples of how Australians have cheated of course you do, before Trescothic wrote that no-one knew what they were doing because they hadn't got court, when someone from your team has a book to sell the secrets will be revealed, its all gamesmanship, i have no problem with it, your just better at it
SOCCERROO FOX Posted 25 August 2008 Author Posted 25 August 2008 of course you do, before Trescothic wrote that no-one knew what they were doing because they hadn't got court, when someone from your team has a book to sell the secrets will be revealed, its all gamesmanship, i have no problem with it, your just better at it It's actually been common knowledge for a long time this is just the conformation. I think it was Troy Cooley the fast bowling coach actually came out and said this had been done a couple of years back.
Babylon Posted 25 August 2008 Posted 25 August 2008 Before calling me an Idiot give me examples of how Australians have cheated The only reason you are all in Australia is because you cheated, stole and killed... that's why we sent you there in shackles.
SOCCERROO FOX Posted 25 August 2008 Author Posted 25 August 2008 The only reason you are all in Australia is because you cheated, stole and killed... that's why we sent you there in shackles. Was waiting for it
Babylon Posted 25 August 2008 Posted 25 August 2008 Was waiting for it You set yourself up on that one.
SOCCERROO FOX Posted 25 August 2008 Author Posted 25 August 2008 You set yourself up on that one. I didn't even need too, any topic that swings towards a debate even slightly which mentions Australians V Brits it will always be brought up. Funnily enough when i went to Leicester people started calling me "convict" for the life of me i couldn't figure out what for and i had to ask why, young and naive
Suffolk_fox Posted 25 August 2008 Posted 25 August 2008 GBR Football side in 2012? I think that we should compete in ALL football competitions as a UK team - we are a small island, and slitting up ourselves into 4 does us no favours at all. The only reason we have 4 teams 'competing' is that we have 4 seats at FIFA, its just a power thing. Imagine what a UK football team would be like...

I think if a UK football team was to be made, FIFA would demand our team stayed like that which I do not want as it take away the England Scotland rivalry

What could have been... ? That was the first thought that comes to my mind too...

My only fear is that once we have a GB side, there will be pressure for one FA to govern the nation, thus giving the Old Firm even more ammunition to waltz straight into the Premiership.

You can't just remove decades of inter-UK rivalry and take national sides away from very passionate, patriotic fans. Can you?
Uncle Albert Posted 25 August 2008 Posted 25 August 2008 Wouldnt be to fussed if we did or didnt have a team at 2012, I would not follow it at all. Would many English players take part in it anyway as the Season will have started and Euro 2012?
James. Posted 25 August 2008 Posted 25 August 2008 Would many English players take part in it anyway as the Season will have started and Euro 2012? Good point. I'd be happy to see a GB team at the Olympics but nowhere else. Given that the season will have started and Euro 2012 maybe it's an opportunity give youth players experience of international football in front of large crowds. I'd watch that.
Tevez Posted 25 August 2008 Posted 25 August 2008 Aslong as Micheal Mancienne (Chelsea) skippers the GB and England 2012 side. I'm not moaning.

General Smuts Posted 25 August 2008 Posted 25 August 2008 It'd basically be a UK B team as is always the case with Olympic squads anyway. 4 years down the line you would possibly see players like Mattock or Bostock - young players with U21 experience now but who will be not quite ready for the first team in 4 years.
James. Posted 25 August 2008 Posted 25 August 2008 not it wouldn't this years Olympics was delayed to avoid the heavy rain season in China, they will be in June/July as before In the middle of Euro 2012 then...
Webbo Posted 25 August 2008 Posted 25 August 2008 It has to an under23 team with 2 or 3 overage players allowed. The start of the premier league season will be delayed until the Olympics are finished.
Jimmy Posted 25 August 2008 Posted 25 August 2008 In the middle of Euro 2012 then... so its for U23's not the full sides
