I think that's a slightly over-simplified argument. The murder rate is not simply a function of the potential punishment, there are a plethora of other factors relating to culture, wealth, history, economics, etc.

I'm not saying I'm in favour of the death penalty. I'm not. But using the USA as an example of justifying why we shouldn't have it is flawed.

Of course there are different factors involved and the US is a different situation entirely, but in terms of countries where the death penalty is enforced, the US is the most immediately comparable in the areas you mentioned. You'd expect the murder rate to be a lot lower than it is if the death penalty works as an effective deterrent, but is isn't much lower.

Racist graffiti sprayed on Leicester house

Police in Leicester have said they will not tolerate racism after a house was daubed with offensive graffiti.

Anti-immigration and anti-Islam slogans were sprayed on the wall, patio doors, windows and fence of an unoccupied house in Bateman Road, Beaumont Leys.

Officers said they wanted the community to know the incident was being treated as a priority.

They also appealed for witnesses, saying the slogans were left during the morning of 12 August.

The graffiti has since been removed.

Pc Karl Rudham, the investigating officer, said: "I would like to reassure members of the community in Leicester that racism, of any kind, is not something that we will tolerate and hope that the public will help us locate those responsible.

"Neighbourhood officers from Beaumont Leys have been made aware of the incident and are keeping a close eye on the area, but we are hopeful that someone out there has information about the suspect or suspects."

I would be in favour of this if and only if 100 proponents of capital punishment were hanged every time there is a wrongful conviction and hanging of someone.

maybe so , but alternatively

if 100 proponents of anti capital punishment were given life sentences for every convicted murderer set free to commit another murder then there would be at least 3000 more lifers in prison

Never understood Capital punishment myself - put simply -

'Hey society - that guy was really bad because he killed people, so we're going to kill him because we're...errr.... good'

Yeah, doesn't add up really

so , basically if someone kidnaps a person and keeps them against their will , then the punishment shouldn't be ........................errr taking them and keeping them against their will

Most the people in this video to be honest.

Nothing but respect for the Green Brigade but there really are some prize spastics in Celtic's support.

Oh and a slightly lighter one. Cowboy letting agencies in Leicester. If you've been a student in the city, you'll know exactly who I mean.

I find it amusing that Scottish people are singing 'go home BRITISH soldiers...' (though I appreciate by proxy of religion they are republicans)

If this was an Irish team, in Ireland, do you think they would have the right to sing this song?

Interesting thought

Proof that every club has it's ******. These are pretty much the equivalent of those among our support who sing Ingerlund at Cardiff fans.

Three men have been jailed for sexually assaulting an unconscious woman who only learned of the attack when she saw footage of it on a mobile phone.

Mohammed Shahjahan, 27, from Oxford, was jailed for eight-and-a-half years for rape at Oxford Crown Court.

Feizal Ali, 26, was jailed for three years for sexual assault. Both had denied the charges against them.

Nicholas Jones, 26, who made the film, will serve three-and-a-half years after admitting sexual assault and voyeurism.

All three will be put on the sex offenders register for life.

'Sickening' actFollowing the sentencing on Friday, Judge Julian Hall said: "This was a disgraceful incident which would not have come to light but for the fact that Nicholas Jones filmed it, kept it and later showed it to the victim."

The judge described Shahjahan as "an arrogant young man who was heartless, shameless and had no consideration for the victim".

_49061778_comp.jpgAll three men will remain on the sex offenders register for lifeHe went on to say Jones was a "decent young man who did absolutely terrible things that night".

The court heard the woman only discovered she had been raped and sexually assaulted two weeks after the attack, which happened in November last year, when Jones showed her the footage.

Prosecutors said the woman had passed out at a flat in east Oxford after drinking three vodka and Red Bull cocktails and did not remember the assault.

The court was told the woman had been "incapable of consent".

Jones, of White Road, pleaded guilty to two sexual assault charges and voyeurism.

Shahjahan, of Slaymaker Close, and Ali, of Howard Street, were both found guilty last month.

Det Insp Simon Morton, from Thames Valley Police, said: "The victim's courage, strength and determination has been incredible.

"I just hope for her the justice system has worked and that she can now start to move on with her life.

"This has been a long investigation by numerous officers, including the serious sexual offences unit, into a truly sickening incident, which came to light after it was discovered the offences had been filmed by the men.

"It's really important that this sends the message to victims out there of sexual offences that we will do our utmost to thoroughly investigate sexual offences and bring offenders to justice."

I don't understand why they haven't arrested him for incite to racial hatred. (obviously the right wing press would have a field day but still)

Hypothetically;

A small group of lunatic fringe islamists burned a few bibles in some remote part of Afghanistan , and this caused widespread violence among enragaged "peace loving" christians , who then vented their anger by violence towards middle eastern muslims .

Who would really be to blame in this scenario ?

I'm not saying the reaction that this has received isn't over the top and that all parties concerning are dickheads but this is a deliberate attempt to incite hatred and further stigmatise a certain percentage of the populous. Surely that is illegal? Has this not been used in the UK to silence radical preachers? (genuine question)

Another note - anyone who pays for sex

But surely the idiots who resort to violence at the merest hint of an insult to their stupid religions , deserve to be stigmatised '

Sorry , but i think that we, as a society, should stop apologising for religious fanatical fervour

( whatever religion that may be) on the ridiculous merit of some perceived "antagonism",

Society , saying (or implying) that Terry Jones ( or anyone else who insults religions )is resposible for any violent reactions by any religious fanatic is frankly ludicrous

The irony of attempting any justification of a violent reaction by supposed peaceful religions by it being due to external antagonism is breathtaking .

this is not meant to be argumentative to your points Foxy . just trying to clarify my thoughts on the issue

The new leader of the Ulster Unionist Party (UUP) has faced his first resignation call after he was accused of snubbing gaelic games.

Fermanagh Orangeman Tom Elliott has only just been voted in as the party's new figurehead following a campaign in which he pledged never to attend a Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) game.

But prominent UUP member and former Ireland rugby international Trevor Ringland, who has also been a noted campaigner against sectarianism, threatened to resign from the party unless his new boss agreed to attend a gaelic football match.

Mr Elliott later said he had worked behind the scenes to help GAA clubs in his local area, but was against public gestures he branded as "tokenism".

Mr Ringland said: "Because I see people who are reaching out to the unionist community, reaching out to try to build a shared society here and they need encouragement as well. They need to see and hear a unionism that actually wants to have a relationship with them."

Mr Elliott won two-thirds support from the 1,000 UUP delegates who met in Belfast's Waterfront Hall. He defeated Basil McCrea, who had promised to modernise the party.

Mr Elliott's traditional unionist message, and his background as a senior member of the Orange Order and a former Ulster Defence Regiment soldier, saw the 46-year-old secure an easy victory.

During the leadership campaign he sought to win grassroots backing by telling supporters he would never attend a GAA event or a gay pride event. He was heavily criticised for both claims but said his critics were making too much of the issue.

A man obsessed with violent child porn and "snuff" videos was today jailed for life for the torture, rape and murder of his 12-year-old niece.

Unemployed John Maden lured Tia Rigg to his home on the pretext of babysitting, but he drugged her and acted out his fantasies on the unsuspecting youngster, inflicting a horrific catalogue of sexual injuries before stabbing her and strangling her with a guitar wire.

Passing sentence, Mr Justice Keith said that in his case the mandatory life sentence for murder must mean just that – and he will never be released.

The judge said: "It is inescapable that Tia Rigg died because you decided to realise your fantasies about torturing and killing a young child.

"The fact that you chose your 12-year-old niece, who had put her trust in you, makes what you did all the more unspeakable, as was the fact that all of this was planned by you and you lured her into your home by pretending you wanted her to babysit for you.

"It is difficult to know how long Tia's ordeal lasted.

"The terror, the unimaginable pain you inflicted on her, the indignities you subjected her to … while still alive.

"This was an horrific crime in which a young girl who had everything to live for and placed her trust in you was inveigled into your lair. It was planned, it was premeditated and her agony must have been prolonged.

"This is one of those exceptional cases in which the only just punishment requires you to be imprisoned for the rest of your life."

Maden, the brother of Tia's mother, Lynne Rigg, was due to go on trial at Manchester crown court for murder today but pleaded guilty instead. He carried out the attack on the afternoon of 3 April this year at his home in Cheetham Hill, Manchester. He then called police, appearing "chillingly calm" when he answered the door to officers.

Maden had become obsessed with violent porn he downloaded from the internet, the court heard.

Members of Tia's family sat in the public gallery, yards from Maden in the dock as Gordon Cole QC, prosecuting, opened the case. "In general terms this murder was premeditated," he said. "It was murder purely for his sexual gratification – it had a sexual motive. The facts reveal clearly features of torture, rape, physical abuse and the ultimate murder of a child.

"In the year or so prior to April this year, the defendant had developed what can properly be described as an obsessive interest in images and literature relating to paedophilia, rape and torture. He had an extensive library of such materials which included literature dealing with methods of killing."

Cole continued: "This material and the subsequent discovery of Tia reveals that this defendant was acting out a long-held fascination with rape, torture and abuse of children."

http://www.thisisleicestershire.co.uk/news/YOUNG-LIFE-CUT-SHORT-DRINK-DRIVER-GOING-106mph/article-2804080-detail/article.html

A 12-year-old girl was killed and her mother seriously injured when a drink-driver who was four times over the limit and speeding at 106 mph smashed into their car.

Samantha Arnold died and her mother Sarah Neville was left wheelchair-bound in the horrific accident in Leicester, an inquest heard yesterday.

Drink-driver David Stannett and his father, Michael Stannett, who was his front seat passenger, were also killed in the crash which split their car in two.

Yesterday, a coroner recorded a verdict of unlawful killing on Samantha Arnold and Michael Stannett, and one of accidental death on David Stannett.

Mrs Neville, speaking after the hearing, said: "I hope anyone who is ever tempted to drink and drive reads this and gives thought as to the unimaginable pain such a selfish act can bring to an innocent family."

The inquest heard how Mrs Neville had picked up her daughters Samantha and Rebecca, 16, at 8pm on May 8 after they had been rollerskating at Leicester Leys Leisure Centre, Beaumont Leys.

Mrs Neville said Rebecca got into the front passenger seat while Samantha sat in the middle seat of the first row of seats so they could chat.

She said they were driving along the A563 Lubbesthorpe Way towards the McDonald's restaurant, in Fosse Park, when they noticed a car speeding towards them.

"He clipped the kerb and his front mirror hit the wall," said Mrs Neville, 36, of Eyres Monsell, Leicester. "Samantha said: 'Idiot' and that was it. It was just too quick. There was nothing I could do."

Pc Alan Silver, now retired but then a police collisions investigator, calculated that David Stannett was driving at about 106mph along the 50mph road.

He told the inquest the Toyota Celica driven by Mr Stannett, 26, of Kirby Muxloe, clipped the kerb as it went into a bend under the Braunstone Lane bridge.

He said the Toyota span out of control and smashed into the Chrysler Voyager people carrier driven by Mrs Neville, split in two and the rear section spun into another car, whose occupants were unhurt.

Mr Stannett and his father Michael, 53, of Whetstone, both died at the scene.

Paramedics tried to save Samantha but she was pronounced dead at Leicester Royal Infirmary.

Mrs Neville suffered a broken arm and leg but Rebecca was unharmed.

Coroner Martin Gotheridge said toxicology tests showed that David Stannett had a level of 325mg of alcohol per 100 ml of blood – the legal limit is 80. Michael Stannett had a level of 313mg.

Mr Gotheridge said the level of alcohol in David Stannett's blood was frightening but that Michael Stannett probably knew his son had been drinking.

He said: "Samantha was not in a position to know about the condition of the driver of the Toyota.

"She was an innocent girl who was tragically killed as a result of irresponsible driving of David Stannett."

Following the hearing, Michael's Stannett's former partner said in a statement: "The family and friends of Michael have been utterly devastated by his death in such a tragic accident. To lose a loved one in such horrific circumstances is immensely difficult to come to terms with, and the loss of his life will always be with us."

She also expressed her deepest sympathy to the family and friends of Samantha Arnold.

David Stannett's mother said in a statement: "I wish there was something I could say to relieve the pain that the Arnold family are going through. But there are no words, words are not enough.

"I am devastated for their loss and it gives me great pain to think that my son played a part in this awful tragedy.

"I miss my son terribly, however, I don't want to talk about my grief as I don't think it's appropriate or fair on Samantha's family."
