Finnegan Posted 18 September 2008 Posted 18 September 2008 read this and loved it, loved it, loved it, loved ithttp://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/sport/foo...icle4761813.ece I don't disagree with his point on the Newcastle fans, I agree entirely. But I think Mike Ashley is just another example of something that's very, very wrong about football at the moment. Like or loathe the likes of Al Fayed, Glazer and co' and even Mandaric, they're rich owners that have put a relative degree of finance into their clubs and clearly understand what it means to run a sporting business. Unfortunately what they've done is make way for playboys like Ashley, Abramovic, Thaskin whats-his-face and that Italian muppet at QPR. Some of them might end up successful, but a lot of them will cause a hell of a lot of mess in the sport simply by insisting, erroneously, that they know best. The best sort of billionaire/millionaire owner is the sort that runs the fiscal side of their club and just lets a manager get the fook on with dealing with the football. If you can't trust a manager's choice of player (or scout) then you shouldn't be hiring him in the first place. Ashley's made a royal cock up on Toon side by trying to be some sort of fan's businessman and I do feel sorry for Keegan for taking the brunt of that. I was listening to an interview with Flavio Briatore on SSN the other day and he absolutely did my head in, knocking on about how Dowie was just there to decide the team's tactics and be the coach and how the rest was up to him and his football directors and it just irritated me. He mouthed off about how it was his wallet and he wouldn't entrust his wallet to anyone else and I just thought, y'know, that's just defeating the point of running a club really - you're going to have to be trusting at some point. Bernie Ecclestone wouldn't buy a restaurant, hire a world famous chef and then buy a bunch of ingredients without consulting with him - wouldn't just whip round ASDAs, toss him a few shopping bags and tell him to make something. You can't expect a manager to do the same.
Koke Posted 18 September 2008 Posted 18 September 2008 Randy Lerner is the man. Kevin Keegan is a quitter. A choker. A bottler.

Joe. Posted 18 September 2008 Posted 18 September 2008 Randy Lerner is king of the chairman. So true. He gives his manager money, he stays in the background and lets the manager get on with his job. Are Villa better off for it? Damn right they are.
Alexikokopops Posted 18 September 2008 Posted 18 September 2008 Ashley's an idiot if he thinks his "management structure" could of ever worked. There's one man in charge of a football club at playing level and that's the manager. And it's one thing appointing someone to interfere with the managers job, appointing a prik like Dennis Wise to interfere with the managers is just unacceptable. Directors of Football, Executive Cheif Scouts etc don't work at all, we've seen it at countless clubs, we've seen it here ffs. Do you think Spurs and Chelsea would be doing better without directors of football?

Works fine as long as you have one thing in place - the manager always has the final say. The model works in business and there's no reason why it shouldn't work in football...if only the owners of clubs knew anything about football. For the time being I am happy to sit back and laugh at the mistakes of others while shuddering at the memory of the recent ones made here.
The Stig Posted 19 September 2008 Posted 19 September 2008 It pisses me off, they're all morons the lot of them. I have NO sympathy with Ashley what so ever. He deserves everything he is getting. It doesn't need me to explain what he's done wrong people have already said it, but by appointing Wise and taking control away from the manager he deserves everything he gets. And as for Briatore, if I were Dowie I'd be out of there. Flavio knows nothing about football, if it were Formula 1 then fair enough, he knows a lot about that, but its not his specialist subject. If it all goes tits up he'll be the first to blame Dowie. A manager should run all football at the club. Buy the players, pick the team, pick the tactics, install his style of management, just evrything to do with football. That's the way it should be.

I am sure I read somewhere at the start of the season that Dowie took the job knowing that it would only be for one season, his job is to get them promoted and f**k off and let another manager have the job once they are in the premiership
