Daggers Posted 3 September 2008 Posted 3 September 2008 This is mainly aimed at those who went last night - but what was he like aside from the assists? I felt that he looked dreadful when he came on against 'Nam on Saturday and can not remember a single match where he has impressed me. It's a given that no one stood out last season but I noticed Fez use a couple of words that indicated he was playing with a level of class and awareness last night and wondered if he offered anything more than just being afraid to shoot at goal?
lildave3 Posted 3 September 2008 Posted 3 September 2008 He looked sharp, he really did. His part in the second goal I thought was brilliant and stayed calm for the 3rd too. But he was offside about 93 times yet again. Sort that out (which may just be impossible) and I think he could do alright. Oh, and I think he had 2 shots? 1 of which was pretty easy for the keeper and another was a horrible effort well wide of the goal.
Fez of Mahrez Posted 3 September 2008 Posted 3 September 2008 This is mainly aimed at those who went last night - but what was he like aside from the assists?I felt that he looked dreadful when he came on against 'Nam on Saturday and can not remember a single match where he has impressed me. It's a given that no one stood out last season but I noticed Fez use a couple of words that indicated he was playing with a level of class and awareness last night and wondered if he offered anything more than just being afraid to shoot at goal? The way we are playing would suit him 100% if he could just stay onside. I gave him a rating of 5 when I got in last night purely because he was offside so much but I was rightly flagged up on that by Mark who mentioned his two assists and his work for Adams' goal in particular was very clever - I don't think anyone was expecting him to play the pass that early and it was the difference between a goal and a wasted opportunity. We have four excellent strikers though - some people don't seem too enamoured by Dickov this time around but he was superb in the second half at Fulham. DJ has a hell of a job on his hands establishing himself in this squad and that's the way it should be.
Bryn Posted 3 September 2008 Posted 3 September 2008 It's a dilemma because I don't think he'll smooth his problems out without regular football. But he doesn't warrant a starting berth.
Nickfosse Posted 3 September 2008 Posted 3 September 2008 I went to the game and I thought he played well. He was off side 3 times but he looked sharp and two lovely controlled passes for the 2nd and 3rd goals. He gives us pace that none of the other three have and seems to have good creative instincts.
whitlock Posted 3 September 2008 Posted 3 September 2008 As much as DJ gets critised, fairly or unfairly he aint half a bad striker to have on the bench at this level of football
syston_fox Posted 3 September 2008 Posted 3 September 2008 He was a long way from outing Fryatt as the main "smaller" striker but he did show some potential and willing to be a part of the team. I think normally he would have shot himself for the third goal but was incredibly unselfish .... or maybe his confidence on front of goal is just a little low at the moment. Personally I think if he gets a goal then he could prove to be a really useful impact player and score a hatful coming on from the bench but until he gets that first goal it could be a frustrating time for him.
Father Ted Posted 3 September 2008 Posted 3 September 2008 Not on the topic of DJ, but instead of making a new thread... Was it me or did Hendo keep yet another clean sheet! Make a stunning impossible save! And deserves to play instead of Martin! Martin has played 4 games - 4 goals conceded, 4 poor goals at that. Hendo has played 3 games - 0 goals conceded, real solid performances and well deserved clean sheets. And so from that I conclude that no matter how much Hendo makes you quake in your boots whenever a cross comes in, he is the most reliable goalkeeper we have!

I remember one sharp snap shit which forced a good save out of their keeper.

syston_fox Posted 3 September 2008 Posted 3 September 2008 Martin has played 4 games - 4 goals conceded, 4 poor goals at that.Hendo has played 3 games - 0 goals conceded, real solid performances and well deserved clean sheets. I prefer Hendo but come off it. Yesterday every shot was straight at him apart from one where he made a very good save. That's the only time he's been fully tested in his four games! And 4 poor goals? Couldn't do anything for the Tranmere one, and the other three were against a premiership side of which two shots were deflected past him!
Joe. Posted 3 September 2008 Posted 3 September 2008 As Burnham says, I don't think he'll ever sort himself out enough to ever warrant a first team place here. But last night I was very impressed with him, he certainly didn't look like a striker low on confidence. For example, for Fryatt's goal he could have shot himself, something a striker short of games/goals might tend to do, but instead he showed awareness to gift Fryatt his goal. And his work for the second goal was fantastic too. However, he was offisde a ridiculous amount of times as per. This seems to be a common feature amongst all of our strikers though, with Fryatt, Dickov and Howard all familiarising themselves with the flag. It's something Pearson needs to sort out with them all in my opinion.
FilboFox Posted 3 September 2008 Posted 3 September 2008 DJ Campbell = Offside... makes it piss easy for defenders to stop us when attacking with him up front... he's a liability with all the offsides and doesn't merit having a first team place because he stops us when moving forward. Then again, he is capable of surging forward in pacey attacks and getting goals... but how often? At the moment, it doesn't look like its enough tbh. I think we should keep him as a good sub to come on and change things up but apart from that, if a decent enough bid comes in, we should ship him out as he's a right surly character and could be damaging team morale. It's a shame really... I was really pleased when we signed him.
Guest Posted 3 September 2008 Posted 3 September 2008 I can't comment on his performance last night as I couldn't make it cos if work, but I do think we should afford DJ the same chance to redeem himself that our other players from last season seem to have had. Not that it looks like he'll get much of a look in at the mo with Howard/Fryatt being our main partnership and Dickov being close behind in the pecking order

Well, for the one against Tranmere, if he had actually played to the whistle he could have saved it. As for Fulham, I have heard that there was no chance for the first one but for the second and possibly the third his positioning was poor!
Tilley Posted 3 September 2008 Posted 3 September 2008 Would really like to see him do well, but with Fryatt & Howard scoring, Dickov even has got one, he isn't going to get a starting place any time soon.

Father Ted Posted 3 September 2008 Posted 3 September 2008 Think that says it all. But it's hard to tell from the highlights but from the highlights you can clearly see that his positioning is poor for goals 2 and 3.
lildave3 Posted 3 September 2008 Posted 3 September 2008 But it's hard to tell from the highlights but from the highlights you can clearly see that his positioning is poor for goals 2 and 3. Not really. He had the 3rd goal covered until it hit Gilbert (?) and deflected over him.
syston_fox Posted 3 September 2008 Posted 3 September 2008 But it's hard to tell from the highlights but from the highlights you can clearly see that his positioning is poor for goals 2 and 3. Which is it?
Flynny Posted 3 September 2008 Posted 3 September 2008 But last night I was very impressed with him, he certainly didn't look like a striker low on confidence. And his work for the second goal was fantastic too. I know you were there, like, but thats exactly the opposite. A striker with confidence in themselves would and should have shot from that position. He was doing it all last season and messing up the passes. Every time he was bearing down on goal he'd attempt a pass when he got within 12 yards even if it was to someone in a worse position than him or the pass was risky.
