I get EMA.

I don't really agree with the system, though.

It does help for the right reasons though for me, my parents have little or no money to spare for clothes or like when you ask for a fiver - most of the time the answer is no. EMA helps here. Also, another idea - I'm keeping a lot of mine for driving lessons which I can't afford without EMA. I do have a job but that will go towards a car and attempt to cover insurance which no doubt will fail miserably - but we live in hope!

I think I should get EMA, it's very useful. Not sure i'd say I need it - but it makes things more managable. I only get a tenner anyway. But i'd be mega piss*d off if my parents earned over the boundary and I didn't get it - because like some people have already said, there are the percentage of tw@ts of this world in schools that get their attendance mark and then just piss about and spend their £30 on drugs or something, when there are students working very hard at school who i'm sure would equally love to have some spare money for a car and/or clothes - or stationary if their parents are that mean. Yes, EMA is partly based on performance because of if you get a detention you don't get it. That doesn't really mean a lot. I had the odd off day last year where I pratted about - and I didn't get a detention. People could do this all the time.

To summarise - I think it should soley depend on performance of students because if they then didn't get it they'd only have themselves to blaim. Plus it would act as an incentive. That's my opinion, but like I say it doesn't really bother me because I get it. Mind you £10 is hardly worth the million forms and hassle it took to get there. I would actually like the chance to earn more whilst also working harder which can only be positive. So yeah - I don't mind, but I think the system isn't right in all fairness.

I'm one of those people who finds it very hard to motivate myself. I find it hard to go school every day with no reward, no incentives at all apart from final grades etc. Having EMA is my incentive, knowing that providing I give it everything, keep decent behaviour, meet targets, make sure I go college everyday and stay punctual....that I will get 30 quid a week to spend on whatever....i.e. a leicester away game. Then that in itself is an incentive. For example, if I'm pissed off half way through Wednesday and want to give up, I can say to myself....just get through it, just do it now and on Saturday it's going to be wicked in London or whatever. As something to look forward to, it provides another incentive.

Obviously everyone's unique...I know a lot of people who don't need motivation, they just see it as this stage in their life and just get on with it. Personally though, I need a slight incentive to really make me work harder.

EMA, for me, provides this.

If you can't motivate yourself to go to college everyday, why on earth did you choose to go back?

After all the negative comments towards EMA in this thread, I'm sure telling people that your EMA goes towards away games is a good way of pleasing people. :frusty:

Because I know it will benefit me in the long run, it's just every individual day I sometimes feel I need the motivation.

And I feel for people at college who aren't getting EMA because of the stupid system where it's based on parents income, I honestly do, but I'm not going to restrict myself to buying only school essentials because it might please them.

I buy all sorts of 'fun' stuff that I like with mine as well, and the people who unfortunately aren't getting the EMA probably would to.

This is why trying to force kids to stay on post-16 is wrong.

If you don't want to go to college and study, there should be more opportunities for on the job training so you can learn a trade and earn money at the same time.

Similar to EMA, there's another brilliant invention whereby you drag yourself to the same place every day to do the same old mind-numbingly boring stuff - all in the hope of earning your bread for the week.

Yeah, I got 60 quid on Wednesday for the previous two weeks and then last weeks £30 payment the following day...so £90 in all.

I did the evening shift at the local supermarket, and saturday mornings. It wasn't that hard.
