Tilley Posted 18 September 2008 Posted 18 September 2008 Has anyone who is entitled to it, recieved any payments yet? I presume the payment day is still Friday, as it was last year. But, there are a few people who work in Student Services at Leicester College, who seem to think, the whole system is down, & we won't be recieving any EMA payments until March as a massive back pay. I'm unsure whether I will get it tomorrow as last week was just an induction week, I'm not desperate for it, but it would be nice.
Wycombe Fox Posted 18 September 2008 Posted 18 September 2008 Sorry but you've started me off now! B*stard EMA! ****ing Labour government! In my opinion EMA should be available to children based upon their attendance and performance at school up to the end of Year 11 NOT based upon their parents' earnings. Handing the responsibilty over to the children might improve behaviour and attendance levels NOT penalise the children who work hard, have parents whose earnings are over the threshold and haven't got enough cash spare to match the payments made by the government. It's causing a lot of resentment. Two of my children, no unauthorised absences, no exclusions or detentions, good GCSE's and yet they get nothing. Some complete and absolute tossers £30 a week thank you very much! Takes deep breath and relaxes...

I've just rang up in regards to my application and they've said they're at least 5 weeks behind. We should be able to claim back any money anyway.
AmericanScott Posted 18 September 2008 Posted 18 September 2008 When i applied for EMA last year at college i was turned down. The criteria to recieve EMA says you must have been living here for at least 3 years. At the time of applying, i was only here 2 years 11 months 21 days! Talk about cheapskates. I failed because of this, couldn't afford materials whilst all the idiots who were getting EMA were out buying clothes and drinking. They should ask the students what they use the money for and request reciepts from their purchases. If their purchases have nothing to do with living expenses and college (bills, food, books, PHOTO PAPER!, etc.) then they should stop payments.

What is this over 16's entitled to be given £30.00 a week to carry on in education after 16!! how have I never heard of this before I am outraged!! when I was 16 and went to college as crazy as it sounds I got a part time job and worked to have money to spend and now people are given it free!!! its sound the idea of actually doing something for money is old hat these days it's crazy the government take away the lowest rate of tax and invent a new benefit to give people who can't be bothered to get a part time job and earn money themselves in society in general itseems you are rewarded for doing nothing yet if you work for a living you are sh1t on just doesn't make sense to me I have just noticed that during this rant I have have commented on "the youth of today" and "when I was a lad" does this mean I am now officially a miserable old git already????
MC Prussian Posted 18 September 2008 Posted 18 September 2008 ... Jay's rant... C'mon, pal. Let's go for some drinks, shall we?
Dr The Singh Posted 18 September 2008 Posted 18 September 2008 I thought this thread was about some bird called EMA...... To say i'm deeply disapointed is an understatement!!!
Wycombe Fox Posted 18 September 2008 Posted 18 September 2008 I don't agree with EMA (if you hadn't already guessed) but as this wonderful government has introduced it, it should be for all students. It shouldn't be cash either. Surely if it's to 'maintain education' then it should be in the from of book vouchers, educational trip vouchers or stationary.
Trav Le Bleu Posted 18 September 2008 Posted 18 September 2008 I thought this thread was about some bird called EMA......To say i'm deeply disapointed is an understatement!!! And I thought it was about East Midlands Airport
Libertine Posted 18 September 2008 Posted 18 September 2008 Yeh, they're a few weeks behind. It'll get backdated though, so we'll get it eventually.
Bert Posted 18 September 2008 Posted 18 September 2008 What the hell is EMA? Educaton Maintenance Allowance.
The People's Hero Posted 18 September 2008 Posted 18 September 2008 I worked for my money and I'm disgusted you lot are given it. No one should have anything I don't have, apart from diseases.
Koke Posted 18 September 2008 Posted 18 September 2008 What the hell is EMA? A vast sum of money these kids get just for attending classes at College. It's a farce, I tell yer.
The People's Hero Posted 18 September 2008 Posted 18 September 2008 I want to go back to college. Fit girls, easy classes and free money. You lot are going to get a shock in a few years, I can tell you.
Bert Posted 18 September 2008 Posted 18 September 2008 Oh and you can either get £30, £20, £10 a week depending on your household income.
Wycombe Fox Posted 18 September 2008 Posted 18 September 2008 Educational Maintenance Allowance given to Post-16's to encourage them to remain at school. They only get anything if their parents earn under a certain threshold. Those whose parents earn more than the threshold get nothing. In my experience with two of my own children, it causes a lot of resentment. On the one hand you may have a child who has barely attended high school and been disruptive when there, getting £30 a week to attend after Year 11. On the other hand you may have a child who has worked very hard, caused no disruptoin and gained very good GCSE results getting nothing. A bit unfair on the kids who have worked very hard only to be penalised by their parents' earnings.
The People's Hero Posted 18 September 2008 Posted 18 September 2008 £30 please. And I'm studying at the moment, for something far more complicated that a sodding college NVQ or A Level or something. Do I get any funding or help? Do I bollocks? I work two jobs and then try to study in my own time. £30 a week for kids who do maybe 2 hours a day at college is a disgrace. Just get a fu cking job.
James. Posted 18 September 2008 Posted 18 September 2008 So kids are now actually paid to go to school? And it's coming out of my taxes? My word.
Dr The Singh Posted 18 September 2008 Posted 18 September 2008 Oh and you can either get £30, £20, £10 a week depending on your household income. £10 at college would pay my booze for atleast 1.5 nights, boy that would have been great!!!! Wait, my taxes pay you feckers to get pissed, you feckers best buy me a beer every time I see you atleast!!
Libertine Posted 18 September 2008 Posted 18 September 2008 I'm already un-arsed with college this year. Might screw it and get a job like a real man. I'm already thy God Of All That Is Musical tbh.
The People's Hero Posted 18 September 2008 Posted 18 September 2008 So kids are now actually paid to go to school? And it's coming out of my taxes? My word. And they wonder how they can afford knives to mug us for the rest of our income. Arseholes.
Koke Posted 18 September 2008 Posted 18 September 2008 There are kids back in the homeland who will give their right testicle for the chance of having an education, and here we have some kids getting money just for attending.

I'm already thy God Of All That Is Musical tbh. Get a job but just continue to do college. You get it free, and presumably it's not considered part of your taxable income anyway? I could do with an extra £120 a month but sod the guy who works every hour he can! Give it to the young'uns to buy comics, sweets and knives.
