Tilley Posted 20 October 2008 Posted 20 October 2008 2-2 is still a very good result for Newcastle in the circumstances.
DB11 Posted 21 October 2008 Posted 21 October 2008 I thought he got the Robinho's legs first, bringing Robinho down therefore that was why he was able to get a touch on the ball afterwards. Penalty and red card were both correct imo
AmericanScott Posted 21 October 2008 Posted 21 October 2008 eh? looks like betslip goes into bin I'm telling you, that guy is a bad influence on you. Making you sit in the bookies making bets like 5-1 Man City and 3-1 Tottenham for 50p each. No wonder why he's on a losing streak haha

I thought he played the ball, won the ball and Robinho's momentum took him down. Both decisions were wrong, and also, in the second half, Nicky Butt made a similar challenge on Robinho and Man City didn't even get a free-kick.

It was never a penalty, no way. The ball was won fairly and then the man was taken. No penalty, no red card.
sdb Posted 21 October 2008 Posted 21 October 2008 I thought it was a great tackle - just, but it was such a hard one to call (we can't even agree with replays). Styles is a worryingly bad ref for the top level but it's hard to slate him for this one

Simi Posted 22 October 2008 Posted 22 October 2008 DB11 the only one to stick up for the referee? Hummmm...
DB11 Posted 23 October 2008 Posted 23 October 2008 I'm not sticking up for Styles at all. His positioning was atrocious. He was too narrow and too far away, plus he made no effort to advance when such an event was about to transpire, with the attacker advancing on goal with the GK and defender near him). Running towards Beye waving a red card too did not help him the sell the decision. Beye's trailing leg catches Robinho first, this is a given, and you can be sure of this by watching slow mo replays and pausing it, but even if he didn't the fact that the ball is played first doesn't mean it still can't be a foul. It could be careless, reckless or using excessive force and it is still classed as a penal offence.
potter3 Posted 23 October 2008 Posted 23 October 2008 I think it was a penalty, looks like he took the players leg fractionally before he touched the ball.
DB11 Posted 24 October 2008 Posted 24 October 2008 I think the linesman was at fault too, should have helped Styles out more. If you were the linesman and Styles had already blown and shown the red card it is not your responsibility to then over rule it. You'd look a pillock, and if I was the Referee and I'd already shown the red card there is no way I am going to change my mind as it will ruin any credibility that there is between the match official team. So then the linesman would be getting involved, Styles would be saying no thank you, the linesman would look and feel a twat, Styles would bollock him back in the changing room, there would be no credibility between decisions, and what if it was shown the referee was right (which I think he was, purely lucky not because he was in a good position).

I'm not saying he shuld have overruled Styles, I just meant he could have called Styles over to give him his version of events. The linesman may have said the same thing as Styles, I felt that a second opinion may have helped because, as you say, Styles' positioning was dreadful.
