LeeCovFox Posted 27 October 2008 Posted 27 October 2008 http://timesonline.typepad.com/thegame/200...e-should-t.html Bolton chairman Phil Gartside has told the media that he wants the Premier League to expand to 36 clubs, split into two divisions of eighteen. What an absolute cock. It was only as recently as 1992/1993 that his own club won promotion to the second tier of English football. I very much doubt that he would have been making the same suggestions back then. Smacks of self interest yet again from a Premier League chairman.

And he appoints them as managers as well.
billyfox1 Posted 27 October 2008 Posted 27 October 2008 so he'd rather play the likes of wolves and sheff utd etc instead of man u chelsea and arsenal. what a prat
dandannieldanok Posted 27 October 2008 Posted 27 October 2008 This was briefly mulled over on Soccer Saturday before being laughed off, I had the same reaction. Relegation is obviously no fun and pretty horrible but it creates intrigue and to take it away for me would ruin a lot of the competitive edge.
sdb Posted 27 October 2008 Posted 27 October 2008 he's a moron. where do u get the face to say shite like that? he's made a fool of himself and i really hope they go down now. not that they're an attractive team to watch anyway
lookwhaticando Posted 27 October 2008 Posted 27 October 2008 Making the top 36 teams an exclusive bunch solves nothing. All it does is make the top divisions even more boring than they are already. What a dink.
Simi Posted 27 October 2008 Posted 27 October 2008 Someone is scared of getting relegated this season and caving under the financial pressure aren't they? Selfish ****, hope Bolton rot.
Sparky Posted 27 October 2008 Posted 27 October 2008 100% BELL END Id love it if Bolton go down , LOVE IT !!!
Head Honcho Posted 27 October 2008 Posted 27 October 2008 I see nothing wrong with it to be honest. It's not done any of the American leagues any harm. They couldn't do it in any other European league as they don't have enough clubs with big support but English football could easily sustain 2 top leagues although 18 teams in each would be a push 16 would be more realistic as after playoffs for the title and relegation 16 teams would mean 32-35 games a season.
dandannieldanok Posted 27 October 2008 Posted 27 October 2008 I see nothing wrong with it to be honest. It's not done any of the American leagues any harm. And it's done the American leagues good? Very few people, even in America, are interested in them.

My problem with this isn't that the English league wouldn't be able to sustain it. Neither is it the idea of smaller divisions. I've long been a supporter of the idea of a top flight of 18 teams, with promotion and relegation being modelled on the Italian leagues in the 1990's. My main problems with this are the suggestion that relegation to and promotion from the Football League be abolished, with to me is against the spirit of the game, and the hypocrisy of a chairman whose own club was in the third tier as recently as 15 years ago. He certainly wouldn't have supported such an idea back then. I agree with the sentiments of a previous poster, that Gartside knows that for a club of Bolton's size, relegation is inevitable sooner or later. He is woried about his back pocket should that happen. His comments smack of self-interest.
Daggers Posted 27 October 2008 Posted 27 October 2008 The only thing that will stop it happening in the end is a decent collapse of available credit and a host of billionaires losing a wad.
dandannieldanok Posted 27 October 2008 Posted 27 October 2008 I don't mean soccer leagues! Oops sorry my bad. I'm guessing your talking about sports like American Football and Baseball, but then, correct me if I'm wrong, the gulf in class between the top say 10/15 teams and any other teams is so big that relegation and promotion would be pointless. It's not the same in English football. Basically I hate the idea

The issue of no relegation grates on me a fair bit , if it had happened at the beginning of this season then us nor leeds would ever play in the top flight ever again . I would guess Us and Leeds are matching or close to matching Boltons attendance despite playing 2 levels below , us and Leeds have twice the history of Bolton , ringfencing the top 2 divisions kills the dream for every other football league club
davieG Posted 27 October 2008 Posted 27 October 2008 I have a vague recollection that no relegation was part of the 'original' idea for the Premier League. I can't see the Football League agreeing to it because it would downgrade them to virtual semi-professional level - to many vested interest there. That being the case it wouldn't necessarily be the top 'x' number of the Championship joining them as I believe it would involve a bust up/disagreement/in fighting and could end up with clubs having to apply to join this league.

I'm pretty sure that's what would happen. It would obviously have to include the current Premier clubs and the rest would be tendered out and you'd have to be voted in by the current members.

America has an entirely different sporting culture though. I don't mind watching NFL because it's different from what we have here, but to do something like that over here would just shit all over 120 years of league football in my opinion. The Premier League's a boring enough league to watch and follow, but the way to improve it is not to introduce gimmicks like this, but to stop the 'big four' cartel either through salary caps or foreign player quotas.

Salary caps and foreign player quotas!!! Now where have I seen that before? Oh thats it America! ..................and for your information it was the premier league that shat on 120 years of league football.

Fair play, you got me , and I totally agree with you about the Premier League ruining football. I just feel that those are the two things which should be done to even the playing field. Realistically though, UEFA and the Premier League seem interested only in flogging their biggest brands to the rest of the world, not the sporting competitions which they are supposed to oversee. So I can honestly see a situation soon whereby Man U, Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool all join a European Super League, chase the money and become part of a huge football circus. Then the rest of the English clubs can get back to genuinely exciting league seasons again, which would be great for me as I'm too young to really remember such occurrences.

Nationwider Posted 28 October 2008 Posted 28 October 2008 I'm not sure who this plan's for exactly? Surely not for ensuring that Bolton Wanderers keep on getting a slice of the cherry pie when they inevitably fall out of the top tier and fail to return immediately? Gartside is shitting himself, isn't he? No idiot, from the Middle East to Eastbourne, is ever going to invest in Bolton Wanderers so it's only a matter of time before (like Leeds, Leicester, Wednesday, Forest, Southampton, Norwich, Coventry etc etc etc) they fall into a protracted spell of ignominy. Boo hoo. Nice to see Gartside's still acting like a dumbass two years after he was embarrassed by the Panorama documentary on corruption in football. Only a dumbass chairman could have the manager and his son running around under his nose playing "Hide The Bung" (allegedly, eh-hem) without out him noticing. Surely Gartside couldn't have known about this, could he not? No, of course he couldn't have.
