Legal battle threatens British GP

The future of the British Grand Prix at Donington is again in doubt after legal proceedings were issued against the company leasing the track.Track owners Wheatcroft & Son Limited are seeking £2.47m in rent arrears from Donington Ventures Leisure Ltd (DVLL) as well as forfeiture of the lease. DVLL, headed by chief executive officer Simon Gillett, secured the 150-year lease in 2007. The circuit has a 10-year contract to host the race, starting in 2010. The proceedings against DVLL were started at Derby County Court by lawyers at Browne Jacobson LLP, acting on behalf of the Wheatcrofts, Tom and Kevin. "It is with great reluctance we have taken this decision," said Kevin Wheatcroft. "Donington Ventures Leisure Ltd owe us nearly £2.5m in rent dating back to September 2008. "Despite receiving numerous reassurances over a number of months, they have consistently failed to meet their financial obligations.

My predictions are that Button will edge the title this season. He is beggining to show that he is a good driver and has an amazing car for this season, in the dry and the wet.

Pretty decent for a Bahrain GP.

Yeah not bad actually, although I'm still resentful of the fact that F1 is a global brand and rightly needs to go to these featureless circuits in the place of fantastic tracks such as Imola.

Well it doesn't look as if Donno will be ready in time so the British GP many have to make way to one of these tracks

I've heard loads of stories from my mates at Donington, one of which is that they could go bankrupt. Also, Simon Gillet didn't sign the form for planning permission so it could still be withdrawn. Donington will never ever be ready.

Latest from the Beeb

Grand Prix loss could cost £100m

The East Midlands Development Agency (Emda) has said the region could miss out on up to £100m if Donington Park loses rights to the British Grand Prix.

Donington Ventures Ltd could lose the chance to stage the Grand Prix from 2010 after a legal argument arose over £2.47m in track rent arrears.

In addition, North West Leicestershire District Council is reviewing planning permission over safety concerns.

Emda's David Wallace said a move to Donington would be "huge" for the area.

Permission was granted in January for a £100m revamp of the circuit, including a new pit and paddock complex and extension to the track, subject to a Section 106 agreement which was due to be completed by the end of March.

Getting an investment like this off the ground is never going to be easy, particularly in the current economic climate

David Wallace, Emda

The Section 106 covers safety and environmental issues, travel and transportation plans and monitoring fees.

North West Leicestershire District Council has said it has concerns conditions will not be met in time.

In another blow to the plans, on 23 April it was revealed that legal proceedings had been issued against Donington Ventures Leisure Ltd, who lease the track from Wheatcroft and Son Ltd.

The proceedings relate to more than £2.47m in rent arrears dating back to September 2008.

'Huge' potential

Mr Wallace said: "Getting an investment like this off the ground is never going to be easy, particularly in the current economic climate but Donington Ventures have always been confident they would be able to raise the finance to make the Grand Prix happen.

"This could be huge for the region, it could mean as much as £100m for the regional economy over the next 10 years.

"The way Donington Ventures has planned the traffic management, there will be opportunities for local B&Bs and hotels.

"We are particularly trying to encourage staying visitors - overnight or the whole weekend."

A Donington Park spokesman said "all the conditions will be met" and it was "still confident that the Grand Prix will take place".

The circuit has a 10-year contract to host the race, starting in 2010.

North West Leicestershire District Council is due to discuss its planning decision in regard to Donington Park on 5 May.

£40 million budget cap and 13 teams for 2010

Formula One racing’s governing body, the FIA, has revised its budget cap plans for 2010. Teams signing up for the optional cap must limit their spending to £40 million per year (£10 million higher than originally proposed) in exchange for greater technical freedom. This will not include driver salaries or, for 2010 only, engine costs.

Thirteen teams will be accepted for next year’s championship and all must apply by May 29, 2009, stating whether they wish to compete under the budget cap or not. New constructors will be eligible for a participation fee and assistance with travel expenses from commercial rights holder Formula One Management.

A new Costs Commission will monitor and enforce the budget-cap regulations. Those teams accepting the cap will be able to run constantly adjustable wings, engines with no rev limit, more powerful KERS systems, and - in theory - four-wheel drive. They will also be allowed unlimited out-of-season track testing with no restrictions on the scale and speed of wind tunnel testing.

Other 2010 changes for all teams include the expected ban on refueling and tyre warmers, and an increase in the minimum car weight from 605 to 620kg, a move designed to offset the disadvantage heavier drivers face when running KERS
