Sir Fynwy Posted 8 January 2009 Posted 8 January 2009 Got my Freesat HD box yesterday and have set it up, the picture is so much better than my sky picture and I can get free HD (only BBC and some ITV at the mo but more will come), I'll be calling Mr. Murdocks bunch next week to cancel my subscription, the only regret is not being able to watch the cricket at home but I can live without it (or spend hours in the gym watching their tv). I came to the conclusion over Christmas that paying so much for TV just plain dumb.

I did exactly the same at your age SF and now I'm back with the full monty sky package.

Woohoo, I'm approaching middle age! Can't see us going back to sky but you never know, might try setanata for a bit if I can't live without TV matches.

Sir Fynwy Posted 8 January 2009 Author Posted 8 January 2009 Do you run the Freestat HD Box & Sky off the same satellite dish and setting? The freesat HD box plugs straight into the sky connection, no problems, if you want to keep sky and freesat you will have to add a multile lnb and cabling as each box needs it's own feed (2 feeds per box if you want recording facility). It's all pretty straight forward, I'm just going to remove the sky box and put freesat in it's place for now but may put a 4 way lnb and extra cabling to different rooms if I can be bothered.

Are any of these extra feeds from the satellite dish?
Sir Fynwy Posted 8 January 2009 Author Posted 8 January 2009 Are any of these extra feeds from the satellite dish? They are all from the dish, the lnb is the centre piece on of the dish (on the arm) that the cables attach to, you need to replace the single lnb for a 4 way one and then cable each lnb connection to a box. If you have sky+ or HD you will already have a multiple lnb and at least 2 cables to the current sky box.

No I haven't got a Sky+ box as I wasn't too keen on paying for the installation on top of the box cost (call me tight). Presumably with the Freesat you can do this cabling yourself, so I could initially have a freesat+ (2 cables in one room) and the Sky 1 cable) in another. Then remove the sky when ever I felt like it.

I got the Humax Freesat HD box from ebay for £109 delivered, didn't want + at the moment.

Ok sounds good, I just got the problem of my internet connection which I currently get for £5 from Sky but it's dependent on having the minimum Sky package.
Phube Posted 8 January 2009 Posted 8 January 2009 I have SkyHD... and now get well over 20 HD channels... All in HD lovelyness Mr. Murdoch can have my money... I like his shiny HD service...
Daggers Posted 8 January 2009 Posted 8 January 2009 HDTV sales fallOne in five HDTV users can't see the difference By Nick Farrell @ Friday, December 19, 2008 6:49 AM Sales of HDTVs are falling, according to a new report. According to research firm Display Search, the state of the economy and the drop in retail prices will result in a drop in shipments and as much as a 16 per cent fall in revenues from 2008, to $64 billion next year. Although 120 million LCD HDTVs will be shipped, this figure is down nearly 12 million from the firm’s previous forecast, with lowered growth in North America, Japan and Western Europe. Thirty-two inch HDTVs will see the largest drop-off, as demand for those sizes falls. However, part of the reason might be because one in five HDTV owners cannot spot a difference in their picture since upgrading from standard definition TV. Another survey from Leichtman Research Group, which polled over 1,300 US households about what they were watching, said many HDTV buyers don't understand that their existing cable TV feeds come at standard-definition resolution. Some didn't know that a service upgrade has to be purchased in order to get high-definition programming. Many don't understand that a high-def cable signal isn't included with the TV set, and that most need additional hardware to decode an HD signal. Apparently cable and satellite providers offer low-grade transmissions that make HD signal so compressed there is no difference in quality, even if you are watching the higher-end service. However, some couldn't really tell the difference even when they had HD gear installed. The survey will be bad news for the makers of Blu-Ray gear, who are selling their products on the basis that HD is much better than standard DVD. If customers can't tell the difference between VHS quality pictures and HD, they have no chance of seeing the any difference between DVD and HD. It is not surprising then that the sales of HDTVs are starting to drop. Source I couldn't find the British news version - but the same findings came up.

Just seems like too much money for too little gain to me, I can live without the premiership in either sd or hd and the movie channels are only worth it if you watch movies regularly
Bellend Sebastian Posted 8 January 2009 Posted 8 January 2009 Can I live without the Military History channel? That's a tough one. I love Sky +, but now you can get PVRs that do the same thing I'm tempted to jump ship and save myself £22. I've given Murdoch about £2000 so far - that would buy some pretty nice AV equipment. Can you get an HD Freesat box that records yet? There's a new Panasonic telly with built in HD Freesat that looks really nice, but no recorder, sadly. I must admit that the first time I saw a HD broadcast (the FA Cup Final on BBC 1) I didn't actually know it was HD until I had it pointed out to me, but my mate's Samsung telly isn't very impressive generally, and I think his Virgin + box may have had something to do with it as well. Some of the LCD tellys in Richer Sounds that they're playing a Blu ray player through look brilliant though, it has to be said, although I keep reading that you really can't tell the difference between HD ready and Full HD on screens less than 40" - anyone have a view on this?
The People's Hero Posted 8 January 2009 Posted 8 January 2009 My view is that because I can't afford them, I'm going to assume they're shit.
Alexikokopops Posted 8 January 2009 Posted 8 January 2009 I wish I could get Virgin Media in my flat.
The People's Hero Posted 8 January 2009 Posted 8 January 2009 You need to move. When you and Bevan get this place in London town - I'll move up. Or something.
Stevosevic Posted 8 January 2009 Posted 8 January 2009 I wish I could get Virgin Media in my flat. Because it would be free?
Alexikokopops Posted 8 January 2009 Posted 8 January 2009 You need to move. When you and Bevan get this place in London town - I'll move up. Or something. But our flat is so awesome yet cheap! Because it would be free? £10 a month instead of £56 a month for this
The People's Hero Posted 8 January 2009 Posted 8 January 2009 I like Maidstone anyway - it's got anything a man could want.

The difference is spectacular!! So sharp, so clear... Plus not only is it picture quality... but 5.1 sound too!

Bellend my friend, most TV's are 100 hz but LG are releasing a 400 Hz tv this year, so I can imagine the clarity on tv's getting better!! I think i'm gonna wait until the next tv fad comes out 'Super HD'!!!
