lookwhaticando Posted 13 January 2009 Posted 13 January 2009 I am Phube and I approve of this thread! Phube edited this post, so it's time to run a book. 2/1 Phube edited the post because of some grammatical fuck up. (Misplaced comma is the current favourite). 3/1 Phube edited it simply to add the at the end. 25/1 Phube edited it to remove any mention of the Nintendo Wii and hence avoid ridicule. 100/1 Phube changed his message entirely because he thought he was in a different thread.
Thracian Posted 13 January 2009 Posted 13 January 2009 Sorry, I went to a shite school.Actually I hardly went school. I am not the best at grammar like most of you well educated folks, but I know how to get my point across. Neither you nor anyone else should knock yourselves too much. Eloquence never mended a car or designed a bridge. However, there is beauty to be found in the expression of words just as in the design of a car or bridge. Indeed, eloquence of expression used to give some folks a head start because many people, not least potential employers or customers, sometimes took great note of people's diction. That was before the dumbing down started in schools decades ago and before people started getting public arena jobs without even being able to speak the language properly (and I mean the English as much as others), much less express themselves clearly....as everyone who gets calls from telephone or doorstep canvassers will know. Bad grammar and indifferent communication is everywhere. You wonder if some kids ever had books read to them in their infancy. Or if their parents/guardians ever paid attention to their spelling or sentence construction. So much about language concerns what you hear. And if there is bad language and poor expression in the home from day one, little wonder any children around will simply follow suit. We even have football heroes regularly telling a whole nation that someone "should have went" and put the ball in the net etc as part of a team on armchair pundits. And if that is the way to get on, as it clearly is, what's to discourage everyone else from copying? As with so many things, if standards are set high more people will rise up to that level. If they are dragged down for social or philosophical reasons, then "the norm" will get lower. And, given limited resources, you can only set standards high with the right size/mix of classes, a constant and consistent policy, motivated and respected teachers and, most of all, the assurance of proper groundwork/backing being offered from home. So often, those things considered, the teachers have no chance.

lookwhaticando Posted 13 January 2009 Posted 13 January 2009 There/Their/They're test.I Got 100% As did I, naturally. Frankly, if you get less than 100% you ought to redo English. At a primary level.
The Stig Posted 13 January 2009 Posted 13 January 2009 This thread should be called the bad grammer related joke thread!

Vardinhio Posted 13 January 2009 Posted 13 January 2009 OK, now if I wanted to say: This was the company's decision as they were responsible for implementing this new strategy. Does that make sense?
Monk Posted 13 January 2009 Author Posted 13 January 2009 Sorry archerm, what are you asking us to clarify?
lookwhaticando Posted 13 January 2009 Posted 13 January 2009 Sorry archerm, what are you asking us to clarify? The positioning of the apostrophe, I'm guessing.
Mickey O'Neil Posted 13 January 2009 Posted 13 January 2009 People that complain about something grammatical while doing it in an attempt at irony
AoWW Posted 13 January 2009 Posted 13 January 2009 OK,now if I wanted to say: This was the company's decision as they were responsible for implementing this new strategy. Does that make sense? Assuming you're referring to just the one company (and it sounds like you are) then, yes, that's right.
Lillehamring Posted 14 January 2009 Posted 14 January 2009 OK,now if I wanted to say: This was the company's decision as they were responsible for implementing this new strategy. Does that make sense? correct use/spelling of 'company's', but personally i find the sentence a bit wishy-washy. but, out of context, i wouldn't presume to change it.
Katy Posted 14 January 2009 Posted 14 January 2009 Through and though Brought and bought Grrrrr Uncle Albert stuck with Joey through thick and thin, the rest of Foxes talk didn't agree with it though. Katy had brought some tangy tomato snaps to the Foxes Talk game that she had bought from the corner shop.
