LeeCovFox Posted 1 February 2009 Posted 1 February 2009 Looks as though Tony Adams' days are numbered then. Not a huge surprise, although I think it is a bit of a shame that he it appears that he is being given so little support so early into the job. I thought the Adams/Pompey thing might work out quite well given the effort he put in to educating himself about the non-playing side of the game after his stint at Wycombe, but perhaps he just isn't cut out for management. http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/sport/foo...icle5628479.ece
Webbo Posted 1 February 2009 Posted 1 February 2009 Inevitable really, Pompey are heading for the trap door with Adams in charge.
Stevosevic Posted 1 February 2009 Posted 1 February 2009 Does this actually surprise anyone? Nice bloke but the job he did at Wycombe was abysmal.
Corky Posted 1 February 2009 Posted 1 February 2009 I'm still surprised he got the job in the first place. Portsmouth are rapidly heading down with him in charge.
Ultra Posted 1 February 2009 Posted 1 February 2009 The fact that he's lost key players like Diarra and Defoe hasn't helped. There's no guarantee that a change of manager will make any difference to the current squad.
Thracian Posted 1 February 2009 Posted 1 February 2009 Tony Adams seems to be one of these managers who's been given jobs on the back of his top level footballing ability rather than anything he's shown as a manager or coach.
Anish Posted 1 February 2009 Posted 1 February 2009 Appointing the incumbent assistant as the new manager never works out in the long term. Rob Kelly, Glenn Roeder, Sammy Lee (and I'm sure there's a lot more). Adams has no pedigree as a manager - it's all well and good knowing the players and the set up at Portsmouth, but now he's the one with his neck on the line and the one responsible for tactics so it's a completely different ball game.Watch him fail - mark my words. You heard it here first after his appointment The fact that he's lost key players like Diarra and Defoe hasn't helped. There's no guarantee that a change of manager will make any difference to the current squad. Come off it, losing two key players is a loss, but Portsmouth were doing rubbish even with Diarra and Defoe. Tony Adams is clueless - he was a proven failure in his one previous management job but still got the permanent job at Pompey. Anybody with a half decent managerial record could do a better job. Tony Adams seems to be one of these managers who's been given jobs on the back of his top level footballing ability rather than anything he's shown as a manager or coach. Exactly. Good players don't often equal good managers.
Joe. Posted 1 February 2009 Posted 1 February 2009 I personally think Adams has been hard done by ever since he started there. Like Ultra says, he's already been hit with the departures of Diarra and Defoe, of which he's seen very little of the leftover money due to Portsmouth's current financial state. Sometimes the players have to take responsibility for results, I don't like how it's always the manager who takes it in the neck.

I agree, but it's still slightly puzzling why he was given the job in the first place. I know he was at the club before, but look at his time at Wycombe. He struggled badly, so it was a poser when he was appointed. Whether a new manager will help remains to be seen, but I can't see it getting any better for Portsmouth under Adams.

True, but it's always the manager that takes the blame when things go badly, it's just the way it is. Football clubs can't go and sack players for a 10 game losing streak but they can sack the manager in the hope that a new manager will have a change of fortunes. Besides, even when Adam inherited Redknapp's team (before the sales of Diarra and Defoe) they immediately slumped, which suggests it's more of a management problem.
Ashley Posted 1 February 2009 Posted 1 February 2009 Tony Adams was a great player from what I can remember, just not quite good enough to be a Manager yet.
Simi Posted 1 February 2009 Posted 1 February 2009 Not quite ready for the big time yet, needs to go back down to the lower leagues and learn. Portsmouth have an able squad and shouldn't be doing as bad as they are. When you see the amount of mistakes are made at the back, you have to wonder how much involvment he's having giving what he managed at Arsenal.
Head Honcho Posted 1 February 2009 Posted 1 February 2009 The bottom line is that Adams isn't even one of the top 30 or 40 managers in the country just now-never mind top 20.

Webbo Posted 2 February 2009 Posted 2 February 2009 spot on! he reminds me of bryan robson, management-wise That's a bit unfair on Robbo, 2 promotions and 2 cup finals and he kept WBA up when they looked dead and buried.
lookwhaticando Posted 2 February 2009 Posted 2 February 2009 I'd be massively disappointed if he's dismissed. I'm enjoying them being rather shit. Similarly, I was gutted the day Ramos was sacked.
TrickyTrev Posted 2 February 2009 Posted 2 February 2009 It's a tough gig. They had one of the best midfields in the league last year with Diarra and Muntari, never going to replicate last seasons achievements. Harry got out at the right time. That said, he's got the air of a man who has been through a lot of therapy about him and a Crouch/Kanu strikeforce is the most ridiculous thing I have ever seen. Can see him getting the sack and them getting relegated to where they belong.
