Katy Posted 9 February 2009 Posted 9 February 2009 It is horrible, my mum had a bit of a panic yesterday when she couldn't contact my Uncle or one of my cousins who are all live in Victoria. She managed to talk to my cousin in the end and she said that one of my other cousins best mates parents had died in the fires. Tragic. The temperatures are unbearable there by all accounts, we moan about weather here but can you imagine it being approaching 50 odd degrees?

The fires just flew close to 400,000 ha of land has burnt so far. Luckly Sunday was 24 degrees and today 21 but the fires are still raging but not as bad and most are under control. The uncomprehendable thing is people trying to flee in cars and the fires catching them, people being given no time to escape as was the speed of the fires over 3000 people homless. People losing everything mates and still getting on the front line as a volunteer firefighter.

I've already said, as soon as I'm old enough and something like this happens, I am gonna be a volunteer firefighter

Most of them would of been, they have announced a royal commision to find out what has happened and who did it. Amazing seens, now too be honest not much effects me but watching these seens on tv and listening on the radio. I have chocked back tears on a couple of occasions it is just that sad. Currently watching a story of a young bloke who in one of the hardest hit regions and during the fury of the fire just tried to help people for 6 hours until he passed out. People are living with strangers on a football ground full of tents. The army are scowering towns for dead bodies. It is almost unreal.

Joe. Posted 9 February 2009 Posted 9 February 2009 Read about this in the paper earlier, very tragic. Some of the photographs looked unbelievable, you can see the devastation caused. Apparently they were started by arsonists, absolute c*nts.

Genocide is when you try and wipe out a specific group of people (Geno - gene - kill off that gene pool). IE, what Hitler and Slobodan did was genocide. This is to random. It's mass murder if anything. I think the Australian Prime Minister already said that though.

I saw an interview with the pm who is around the area just talking and trying to console people, and in an interview if he couldn't hold back the tears. Normal people have seen and witnessed people burnt alive, kids dying, people lying dead in cars on the middle of the road. People trapped in towns as there is no way out. Is extremly bad. The one thing that should be applouded in situation like this, is the genorousity and compansantion of the human kind. There has been too many clothes donated, volunteers from far and wide helping do all they can. Firefighters being flown from America. Firefighters working 16 hour shifts even tho they have lost relatives in the fire. Even heard a bloke from londan call up a local radio station to donate money.
ACF Posted 10 February 2009 Author Posted 10 February 2009 People dying in there cars is shocking, just died from the heat. The Premier of Victoria, and the PM both almost broke down in tears after touring the area.
