Tommeh Posted 25 February 2009 Posted 25 February 2009 Couldn't see this discussed anywhere but my time has completely gone for these. For the purpose of this thread I'll ignore MON was ever our manager, because seriously I cannot understand the guy at the moment, he's done a fantastic Job but seems obsessed by the "HOLY 4TH PLACE." They've left out Barry, Heskey, Agbonlahor, Young, Friedel, Petrov, Cuellar for the return game against CSKA and also went to Everton with a huge lack of motivation for the FA cup, again focused on the 4th place. I can understand why they want 4th place with the chance to play in the Champions League but over a trophy their 1st since '96? Fuc k off. Both of which i believe they have a realistic chance of winning. Plus even if they get 4th place they still need to qualify for the European cup which Everton demonstrated a few seasons ago isn't easy. And if their suddenly going to dump the EUFA cup why did they enter the Intertoto Cup in July to get into it? Did Wilfred Bouma get injured for fook. all? I just feel sorry for the 350 odd fans who will be travelling to Moscow and paying probably the best part of £1000 to watch their reserves most likely get beat.
Floating Fox Posted 25 February 2009 Posted 25 February 2009 They'd get more money for coming 4th than they would for winning UEFA cup. Its a ****ed up situation.
hairy Posted 25 February 2009 Posted 25 February 2009 They'd get more money for coming 4th than they would for winning UEFA cup. Its a ****ed up situation. Its all about the money
Samilktray Posted 25 February 2009 Posted 25 February 2009 I dont like Villa that much anyway. Dont get why everyone blows there load over them all the time.
Fosse Boy Posted 25 February 2009 Posted 25 February 2009 It's just so stupid that so many people put league placings above trophies. At the start of the season if someone had given me the option of either promotion out of this division or winning the Cup, I'd take the Cup immediately. It's an especially skewed view in an era where so few teams are actually able to win the league, and most clubs' only opportunity to win trophies comes in knockout competitions. I blame Sky Sports meself.
Tilley Posted 25 February 2009 Posted 25 February 2009 At the start of the season if someone had given me the option of either promotion out of this division or winning the Cup, I'd take the Cup immediately. Sorry, but I have no idea why the hell you would want to win the cup instead of getting promoted out of this shit league.
Corky Posted 25 February 2009 Posted 25 February 2009 I dont like Villa that much anyway.Dont get why everyone blows there load over them all the time. I suppose it's because its good to see a new team up there in the top 4, and they have a very popular manager as well.
Shrenchel Posted 25 February 2009 Posted 25 February 2009 Sorry, but I have no idea why the hell you would want to win the cup instead of getting promoted out of this shit league. I'd rather win the FA Cup than get promoted. I can't for the life of me imagine why anyone wouldn't. No the league cup though...
Tilley Posted 25 February 2009 Posted 25 February 2009 I'd rather win the FA Cup than get promoted. I can't for the life of me imagine why anyone wouldn't.No the league cup though... I could understand wanting a cup run if we were a mid table Championship club, but not this season. This season has all been about promotion for me. The cups don't do it for me.
Corky Posted 25 February 2009 Posted 25 February 2009 I agree with Tilley about the promotion. I couldn't bear being stuck in this division for years and years, it would get soul-destroying over time. If I was in Villa's position, I'd go for both. They'll still have a chance next year to get in the top 4, but winning the Uefa Cup would be special for them.
Fosse Boy Posted 25 February 2009 Posted 25 February 2009 Sorry, but I have no idea why the hell you would want to win the cup instead of getting promoted out of this shit league. Come on! A day out Wembley? Seeing the blue and white ribbons on the handles? Finally bringing the FA Cup home to Leicester? That's got to be worth another year in the lower leagues surely?
Corky Posted 25 February 2009 Posted 25 February 2009 Come on! A day out Wembley? Seeing the blue and white ribbons on the handles? Finally bringing the FA Cup home to Leicester? That's got to be worth another year in the lower leagues surely? I'm really not sure. On the one hand, yes it would be great to see us win the Fa Cup, but you've got to look long-term, and more years in this division won't be good for us.
Tilley Posted 25 February 2009 Posted 25 February 2009 Come on! A day out Wembley? Seeing the blue and white ribbons on the handles? Finally bringing the FA Cup home to Leicester? That's got to be worth another year in the lower leagues surely? No. As I have said, when we are a mid table Championship club, then is when to think about cup runs. This season has been all about promotion. We could have won the FA Cup & finished 7th & it would have been a failure to me. A Cup this season would have been worthless, all about getting back up.
Finnegan Posted 25 February 2009 Posted 25 February 2009 Champions League = MASSIVE. Massive money, massive attraction to players, massive potential. Nobody gives a fuck about the UEFA Cup and increasingly few people give a fuck about the FA Cup, either. I agree that's tragic but it's true. In terms of honest sporting achievement you're bang on, Tommeh. But in terms of the actual modern world we live in you're being hugely naive. MON is doing the "right" thing by his club and (most importantly) the man who pays his wage. Oh and on this argument in the context of City I've made my feelings known, Promotion > All. I will go so far as to be so narrow minded as to say that anyone who disagrees is fucking stupid. Look at Forest, look at Leeds. You either spring back up or you fall into this league to rot - we do the latter and we lose our chairman, our financial stability and any future we have. This year was vital - the Cup, Wembley and whatever else is not only secondary but can come in any season.

A day out at Wembley, a victory in the world's greatest domestic cup competition and a place in Europe, but finish seventh with all that and this season's still a failure? Just goes to prove what I thought about fans caring more about league placings than actual physical silverware I guess.
Finnegan Posted 25 February 2009 Posted 25 February 2009 Really? I'm not typing it all out again. Read the post above. I'm not looking for a fight, I've very little to say here so I'm not going to argue - but IMO you're being a clown.

An Fa Cup win would be great for a while, but if we reach 2014, preparing for yet another season of League 1/3rd Tier football, whatever you want to call it, would it all seem worth it? Honestly?

You need to get real for a minute. An FA cup win would be great, No-one is ever going to deny that, but first and foremost, the league is the priority.
Fosse Boy Posted 25 February 2009 Posted 25 February 2009 An Fa Cup win would be great for a while, but if we reach 2014, preparing for yet another season of League 1/3rd Tier football, whatever you want to call it, would it all seem worth it?Honestly? Yes. I think it would to be honest. Let's face it, unless we see a major shift in power in English football any time soon then there's no chance of any teams outside of the top four (let alone Leicester) winning the league. Therefore, the biggest trophy we (along with most clubs) can ever hope to win is the FA Cup. I guess I'm pretty much alone on this one and obviously I respect that (without being bigheaded) we are too big for this division, but for me the opportunity of any decent silverware would leave a greater mark on our club's history than a mid table Championship/Premiership position (or in this year's case, a promotion) year after year, and would leave us with memories that would last a lifetime.
Finnegan Posted 25 February 2009 Posted 25 February 2009 You're missing the point hugely, I think. Nobody's saying we don't want to win the FA Cup. What we're saying is we don't want to stay in League One and if you're making us choose then it really isn't hard to do so. We want to be a Premiership Team, we want to see great football week in week out and be able to go on runs like Villa or Spurs a few years ago or Everton or Portsmouth when they've been pushing for Europe - and why should that be beyond us? I'd much rather - in our current situation - win a Championship play-off final than an FA Cup final. Imagine the elation! I'd not turn down the FA Cup, but I'd not trade it for promotion. ESPECIALLY not from League One. You'd have to be insane.
Corky Posted 25 February 2009 Posted 25 February 2009 I'd not turn down the FA Cup, but I'd not trade it for promotion. ESPECIALLY not from League One. You'd have to be insane. My feelings entirely

What about the league cup? I'd rather get promoted than win the cup, every single day of the year. Getting promoted is what you work for all season, what you travel around the country for all season. Every season it seems to get harder and harder to get promoted, and as you mention, you seem to think it's pretty easy to win the FA Cup, there'll always be other times we can win that, but when we're in a better position than we are right now. If we don't go up this season, I can see us being stuck here for a few years. For the sake of winning the FA Cup and going out of Europe in the first round, you'd happily watch us play, so many mediocre teams, with shit attendances, (I know this season has been good, but only because we've approached it in the right manner) have more people losing confidence in the team, not being able to attract the better players, and inevitably leaving our chairman to piss off and leave us up shit creek?
Uncle Albert Posted 25 February 2009 Posted 25 February 2009 Villa are very silly. They have had a brilliant chance like Tom said to go far in the F.A Cup and the UEFA Cup just to try and focus on 4th spot? Very silly, yes they may qualify for the Champs League but their is more chance they will be in the UEFA Cup again next year because honestly I cannot see them getting past the qualifiers, very hard to qualify through unless you are one of the seeded teams. Everton didnt manage to get through and Liverpool this season struggled against Standard Leige, then Leige dumped Everton out of the UEFA Cup. Aston Villa have struggled in the UEFA Cup this season against Hamburg, Ajax, CSKA and some Bulgarian team if they are struggling to find victories then I think the Champs League will be a much bigger test. The money would be very nice to Villa for getting into the Champs League but surely getting a good cup run in the F.A Cup and UEFA Cup would also bring alot of money into the club? Just the same as the Champs League qualifiers.
purpleronnie Posted 25 February 2009 Posted 25 February 2009 I understand both sides, but I'm sure most villa fans would be happy to sacrifice a UEFA cup run to play champions league football next season.
