Finnegan Posted 26 February 2009 Posted 26 February 2009 I thought immitation was the sincerest form of flattery?
Floating Fox Posted 26 February 2009 Posted 26 February 2009 I prefer it with lots of games, more teams, more underdog stories, more places to visit. I follow the UEFA cup from start to finish, gives little teams from all over Europe the chance to get onto the European scene, I personally love it.
Finnegan Posted 26 February 2009 Posted 26 February 2009 I try to love it for the reasons Andy mentioned, but it just feels soulless to me. I really, really, really think the winner (or even the two finalists, the loser having to qualify) should qualify for the next season's Champions League group stages (with a decent seed.) For me that'd be one of the few ways to really give it some credability again.
Tevez Posted 26 February 2009 Posted 26 February 2009 For a reason I think it's a good move. Positive thinking from O'Neill, CSKA good side, but Villa have been consistent performers this season. I think Villa are hard to beat at their ground. With Liverpool dropping a few points I don't see why they can't get a result. You just don't know with Football. I think they will beat Moscow.
CosbehFox Posted 26 February 2009 Posted 26 February 2009 I've watched the second half. Absolutely awful from Villa. Harewood's due a Benjamin slide - utter pants.
Milky Posted 26 February 2009 Posted 26 February 2009 I've watched the second half. Absolutely awful from Villa. Harewood's due a Benjamin slide - utter pants. Some of them did ok, but they just didn't have the quality. MON has got what he wanted now though. 12 more games, all in the prem.
Daggers Posted 26 February 2009 Posted 26 February 2009 Come on! A day out Wembley? Seeing the blue and white ribbons on the handles? Finally bringing the FA Cup home to Leicester? That's got to be worth another year in the lower leagues surely? If we were staying in this Division I'd be buying another season ticket. But we aren't - so I'll go for the FA Cup thank you very much. Please have it wrapped and delivered.
Head Honcho Posted 26 February 2009 Posted 26 February 2009 My fiver on them to win the league at 100/1 is looking good now
Uncle Albert Posted 26 February 2009 Posted 26 February 2009 I am glad they have gone out tonight but I feel for all the travelling fans who have gone to Russia tonight. Would be amusing if Villa failed to qualify for the Champions League now and Arsenal pipped them to it, O'Neill wouldnt look so great then would he? Fools.
Corky Posted 26 February 2009 Posted 26 February 2009 O'Neill let his fans down badly tonight, they HAVE to finish in the top 4 to justify picking this side.
Finnegan Posted 26 February 2009 Posted 26 February 2009 O'Neill let his fans down badly tonight, they HAVE to finish in the top 4 to justify picking this side. He'll look a bit turnip if they don't but I disagree. If they put up a decent fight then I think that's justification enough. MON doesn't have to justify himself to a few critics - I'm quite confident a majority of people with some footballing sense will recognise the position he's in and how huge an opportunity the Champions League is these days. The money you get given, just for taking part, is massive, the TV rights are massive and the lure for players is massive. Look at Villareal - snuck into the Champions League a few seasons ago and generally didn't do all that well, but they used the ride to and the rise in stature to start building their squad and they're a much tidier club for it. Lerner's not a mug and you can't underestimate the sway a chairman like that will have on O'Neill. He did the right thing, come what may.
Simi Posted 26 February 2009 Posted 26 February 2009 £800 is what I know some people paid to see Villa in Europe tonight. Regardless of what they do this season, what they have done to their fans tonight is damn right disrespectful.
Ultra Posted 27 February 2009 Posted 27 February 2009 I'd hope that if they do make the Champions League (or at least the qualifying round) they offer free tickets and travel to all of their fans who travelled to see the reserves in Russia last night. It's the least those fans deserve. Most if not all of them would have made the bookings long before MON decided to send the reserves.

Ultra Posted 28 February 2009 Posted 28 February 2009 ... yes because that's very likely. O'Neill invites fans to dinner Perhaps it IS likely...
StanSP Posted 28 February 2009 Posted 28 February 2009 Just read that O'Neill will invite fans to dinner. Would you take up that opportunitty?? And what questions would you ask MON if you had the chance to speak to him?
Ultra Posted 28 February 2009 Posted 28 February 2009 I'd take it. But I'd still want the free trip. The cost to Villa of providing this will be a fraction of their earnings for making the Champions League.
Flynny Posted 28 February 2009 Posted 28 February 2009 O'Neill moved to the back of the plane and offered an explanation for his decision to pick several fringe players. The positive response to O'Neill's actions suggested that any sense of disappointment has been quickly forgotten. Good man. O'Neill, meanwhile, has vowed that he will never again be in a position where he has to sacrifice European football because of a lack of strength in depth in his squad. The Villa manager is confident he will have the financial backing to add more new faces in the summer and avoid a repeat of the embarrassing scenario that saw the club slip out of the Uefa Cup this week after fielding what effectively amounted to a reserve team. This is basically what Finnegan was saying - they get money, build the squad up, and then battle for success on all fronts. They need to chase the money at the minute, Villa have had a paper-thin squad for seasons and seasons now, however well they've been doing.
Finnegan Posted 28 February 2009 Posted 28 February 2009 But MON is a nice guy, we know this and anything he gives will be off his back. If you're expecting fans to travel to the Champions League for free you're not expecting it to come from Martin O'Neill. You're expecting it to come from Lerner in which case you're on cloud fucking coo coo land.
FilboFox Posted 28 February 2009 Posted 28 February 2009 MON's a legend. No matter what team he's been at, he's treated the players (for the most part) and the fans well and done a damn fine job. I think to be fair, the race for the places in the Champions League this year are more important than a cup which they still might not have won anyway.
Ultra Posted 1 March 2009 Posted 1 March 2009 But MON is a nice guy, we know this and anything he gives will be off his back.If you're expecting fans to travel to the Champions League for free you're not expecting it to come from Martin O'Neill. You're expecting it to come from Lerner in which case you're on cloud fucking coo coo land. It wouldn't even be coming from Lerner. It would come from Heineken, Ford, Sony and all the rest of the sponsors who pour megabucks into the coffers of those who make the Champions League. An outlay of about £300k max is just loose change compared to a potential boost to revenue of £30m. And if Villa make 2nd place in the Premier League, which is far from beyond them, a place in the group stages will be guaranteed.
dandannieldanok Posted 1 March 2009 Posted 1 March 2009 Does a 2-2 home draw to the worst travellers in the league justify resting 8 first-teamers in the UEFA cup? I wonder what went through O'Neill's mind when Stoke equalised.
